Dear compassionate people worldwide,

I am reaching out to you with a massive request for support for my beloved cousin, who is as close to me as a sister. Magdalena has been bravely battling cancer for over 5 years, but now our support has the chance to save her life. Magda, an incredible person, faced her own adversities with humility, insisting she didn't need help. She dedicated her time to aiding others through 'Szlachetna Paczka' for ovarian cancer patients and fundraising for little Kajtus battling SMA.

She serves as a lifelong inspiration, guiding me in pursuing goals, finding the courage to travel, and overcoming challenges. Observing her journey empowered me to start my own business and embark on solo travel adventures. I owe much of where I am today to her inspiration, support, and courage.

Now, as Magda confronts an unparalleled challenge, she cannot face it alone. Her life came to a halt with a cancer diagnosis, but with our assistance, she still has a chance for further treatment. I sincerely ask for your kindness in contributing to her fundraiser here >>> https://www.siepomaga.pl/en/magdalena-kalis and sharing this link so that as many people as possible can see and support her.

Your support, which is truly saving a very important life šŸ™, is deeply appreciated in advance. Let's unite and make a meaningful difference in Magda's journey ā¤ļø

CANCER has returned and is attacking with full forceā—ļø In Poland, there is no more treatment available for Magda; after almost 6 years of a dramatic battle, the options have been exhausted. The hope for life and health lies in Germany - Magda is 39 years old, with so many long and...

Hello everyone, it's Anna here with Pip, one of my pet sitting dogs. Despite her grumpy look in the picture, we had a blast together! šŸ˜„

I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself to those new to my profile. I'm an animal trainer, primarily working with dogs. However, the principles of behavioral science apply to all species, which has given me the opportunity to work with a diverse array of critters, including cats, chickens, guinea pigs, horses, and even giraffes. My journey in this field began in 2015 when I earned my certification in Animal Psychology, and I've been on a continuous learning adventure ever since.

I'm a self-proclaimed behavior geek, which means I'm deeply passionate about understanding and applying behavior principles to all creatures, including humans. I thrive on creating new habits and refining my own behavior using the techniques I've acquired through dog training ā€“ and it works wonders! šŸ¤©

As a traveling pet sitter, I offer a unique service by staying at my client's homes while they're away on vacation or business trips, ensuring the well-being of their beloved animals. Many of my clients specifically seek me out due to my expertise in dog training. This has not only allowed me to meet an incredible variety of animals but has also taken me on exciting journeys, including international travel. Over the years, I've had the pleasure of caring for dogs, cats, chickens, guinea pigs, and even parrots during my pet-sitting adventures.

If you're interested in my pet sitting services, please don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or send me a direct message. I recommend booking in advance, as my schedule tends to fill up quickly.

Thank you for following me, and if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to reach out via comments or DM. I'm always eager to hear from you! šŸ˜Š

When people ask me - what will you do in California? I usually reply with ā€œmeeting friendsā€. New puppies can bring so much joy and excitement into our lives, but they can also come with challenges such as:
- sleepless nights
- accidents at home šŸ’©
- damage on your furniture and other objectsšŸ‘ šŸ‘ŸšŸ‘ž
- getting puppy bites on your skin and clothes
- jumping up on you and visitors
- barking and whining

It can be hard work to get everything under control! It's natural to feel frustrated and overwhelmed at times, but know that you're not alone!

With good management all of those problems can be minimised and with positive reinforcement training your puppy will soon learn what to do instead. Start as soon as your puppy comes to you and you will get the fastest results.

Our online Puppy Kindergarten course on Tromplo can help you learn the necessary steps to train your puppy effectively. Join us from May 1st and let's learn together! šŸ¾ Sign up now through the link in our bio.

One common mistake in using shaping is waiting for the dog (or other learner you work with) to offer too big approximation of the behavior. If your animals is not offering what you hoped to see, here is what you can do:

1ļøāƒ£ rearrange the environment so doing the behavior is easier. For example if you want your dog to walk in a straight line - ask for the behavior close to the wall or in between two objects they are familiar with so the only option they will have is to walk straight in between

2ļøāƒ£ ask for a smaller approximation of the behavior. For example if you want to shape ā€˜downā€™, instead of waiting for your dog to lie down, reinforce first movement towards the floor.

There is a caveat with asking for smaller approximations. The mistake that Iā€™ve done in the past (and Iā€™m sure at least a few trainers can relate) is to reinforce a small approximation too many times and then the animal starts to offer only that small approximation - because it pays šŸ˜Š What we should have in mind even before starting the training session is selecting the variability of the behavior. As long as there is a tiny change in the behavior - mark and treat. But if you donā€™t see a change then itā€™s best to stop the session and evaluate what else can you do to start seeing this change. Instead of reinforcing one approximation too often, add one change to your training and see what effect it will have. There is usually something to change that can move you in the right direction.

Now I would love to hear from you. Whatā€™s your experience with shaping? Share with me in the comments šŸ˜Š

Puppies play with things by chewing on them and wonā€™t automatically see those things as something important to you. Your expensive iPhone can easily become a toy for your puppy šŸ¶

It doesnā€™t mean that they are doing it on purpose or that they are being ā€œnaughtyā€. It only means that they donā€™t understand our human concepts of what is a toy yet. Dogs donā€™t come preprogrammed to live in our human world. We need to help them learn.

Take all of your precious possessions out of their reach and teach your puppies what you want them to do. The more behaviors you build (like playing with appropriate toys, settling on their bed, chewing on appropriate dog chews), the less of the unwanted behaviors you will see.

Set them up for success by keeping your things out of their reach and give them outlet for chewing and playing with safe toys. And if they found something like a remote control and chew on it - treat it as a reminder that next time you will need to pay attention where you leave that remote control. They are just being dogs and we love them anyway šŸ„°

What did your puppy treat as a toy that shouldnā€™t be a toy in your eyes? Share with me in the comments šŸ˜Š

Dogs donā€™t have to get along with every dog they meet! Itā€™s a myth that can cause a lot of frustration and tension in many dog-human families.

Just imagine, if you were an introvert and someone would tell you that you HAVE TO get along with every person you meet at a frequent social event - I highly doubt you will continue to go to that social event. Itā€™s ok if thatā€™s not for you! So why wouldnā€™t it be ok for our dogs not to enjoy all social interactions?

If you have a dog who is highly social and wants to say hello and play with every dog he/she meets, it can get you in trouble. I heard many times people say ā€œitā€™s ok my dog is friendly, he just wants to say helloā€ but then the dog ends up in a fight because they tried to say hello even when the other dog clearly told them to back off. Some of these dogs donā€™t read the body language messages other dogs try to convey very well. They completely ignore the polite signs of asking for space which then leads to escalation like growls and even bites! For this reason, it would be much safer for you and your dog to teach them that staying near you is great and they donā€™t have to get all the fun from running to other dogs.

Itā€™s much safer for you if your dog has the skills to politely say hello to some dogs but also completely ignore other dogs. And if your dog already ignores other dogs and asks them to move away - thatā€™s ok too! Donā€™t feel like you need to change him into a social butterfly. As long as everyone is safe, just enjoy the dog you have šŸ˜Š

So how about your dog? Does he/she like all other dogs or avoid some of them? Share with me in the comments šŸ˜Š

Letā€™s normalise dog behavior! šŸ•

Dogs walk faster than us and they donā€™t naturally walk in straight lines. They often move to different areas and sniff a lot! Like A LOT! Even if you feel that ā€œthere is nothing thereā€ itā€™s only ā€œnothingā€ for your human senses itā€™s a completely different story for your dog and his scent receptors. They can learn awful lot from an odor. For us itā€™s just one sentence for them itā€™s like reading a whole book! šŸ˜±

Allow your dog to do what is natural for them (whenever itā€™s safe). They really donā€™t have to constantly follow your instructions! If you give them outlets for their natural behavior they will not only be happier but itā€™s likely that they will also sleep more and behave in more appropriate ways when you need them to.

How does your dog exhibit natural dog behavior that might otherwise be seen as ā€œnaughtyā€? Share in the comments and letā€™s show everyone reading what being a dog actually looks like šŸ¤©

Is it ok for your dog to pull?

Yes it is ok! As long as it is safe for you (no danger that you will be pulled hard enough that you can lose your grip and fall) and safe for your dog (using harness and have the leash clipped on the back clip) - pulling from time to time is not a problem. What youā€™d like to do there is to make it clear for your dog that now pulling is allowed. Add a specific cue which can be verbal, can be a gesture or can be a specific harness you put on your dog that will mean - now pulling is absolutely ok. As long as you make the conditions clear ā€œthatā€™s when pulling is fine and thatā€™s when we work on a loose leash walking skillsā€ you will continue to make progress with those skills. You can even use the access to pulling in those specific conditions as a reinforcer for a polite walk.

Donā€™t stress if pulling still happens! You can incorporate it in your training and get fantastic results for your loose leash walking goal šŸ˜Š

For a step by step plan on how to achieve loose leash walking you can still join our course ā€œLetā€™s goā€ which started March 1st. Grab your spot here >>>

Loose leash walking is one of those skill sets that I practice the most. Every dog I care for as a pet sitter needs to be taken for walks which gives me fantastic opportunity to work on it with many different dogs and in many different settings.

Itā€™s a behavior I find many caregivers struggle with thatā€™s why I teamed up with Shelly (from Shelly Wood Dog Training and Behavior) to write a course Letā€™s go! Loose leash walking course on Tromplo. We want to help each and everyone of you take the right steps to start to enjoy walking your dogs again. It has also given me an opportunity to share what I learned from all the dogs I ever worked with and pass on the lessons I gained from my four-legged friends šŸ¦®

If your dog is pulling and youā€™re struggling to find ideas on what else to try to change that -> sign up for our course šŸ’»Tomorrow we share the first week of our 6 week course packed with ideas and knowledge.

Chirag Patel will be a guest in the Legion of Zoom for a little Q&A session! šŸ¤©

The Legion of Zoom is a free Facebook group J.R. (from ) and I started 2 years ago where we hold monthly Zoom calls with members. Itā€™s a group for behavior geeks (many of them are animal trainers) to meet and exchange ideas about applications of behavior science (namely Applied Behavior Analysis) and support each other.

Once in a while we invite a guest speaker so we can learn from them and with them in a friendly atmosphere of a supportive Zoom call.

We are very excited that this time (next Sunday, March 5th at 6pm UK/ 1pm NYC / 10am LA) we will be joined by one and only Chirag Patel ()! We feel that he needs no introduction as you might have seen him in recent Clicker Expo, maybe you were at his WOOF! Conference or maybe youā€™ve seen him in one of the tv shows like Dogs and Cats at war or most recent National Pet Show on ITV. One thing we can say is that Chirag is a behavior consultant travelling worldwide to help with both domestic and wild animals and teaching fellow trainers šŸ¤©

If you are interested in behavior science and itā€™s vast applications, join the Legion of Zoom here >>> https://www.facebook.com/groups/467964981040914/ šŸ˜Š

About Woofs and Purrs

Woofs and Purrs brings harmony back to the lives of caregivers and their pets

Iā€™m Anna Bartosik and I am the founder of Woofs and Purrs. Iā€™m a continuous learner, highly motivated to change and improve the world we live in. Since getting my PGCert in Animal Psychology, I have attended multiple courses and conferences with a world-class lineup of presenters.

I have cared for animals and wanted to be near them my whole life. My quest is to share my knowledge of animal behaviour to create harmonious lives for caregivers and their pets.

My dream is for people and animals to understand each other fully - to be able to communicate successfully and live happy, fulfilled lives together. I believe that all caregivers of the world can improve their communication with the pets that they care for and develop an amazing relationship with them as a result.
