The Cats' Whiskers was established in 2018, offering cat sitting services in Clevedon and on the basis of treating all my furry customers as though they are my own. Due to other commitments, I am now looking for someone to help me take on some weekend and holiday work initially, with the opportunity to extend this to weekdays during busy seasonal periods.

Part-time, to start in March 2023
The successful candidate will be required to undertake a DBS check, to provide references and to undergo an informal video interview.
You will need:-
- to have a good eye for detail and be able to follow instructions
- be reliable
- be a good problem solver
- be a cat lover
- some experience with cats and understand basic body language
- be trustworthy
- excellent communication skills
- 2 weeks shadowing and full support will be given.

Responsibilities:-
- to provide professional, compassionate care for cats
- to be able to practice time management and keep to a schedule

Job requirements:-
- full, clean driving licence and have reliable transport
- be able to pass a background check
- ability to work on your own initiative eventually

😻 UPDATE - MARCH 2022 😻

To enable the business to run more smoothly, I have decided to start accepting online bookings via my page. To get started, please click the "Book Now" button and follow the instructions. You should also get a message confirmation. Bookings will still need to be approved by me.

As part of this new procedure, with effect from Monday 25th April, I have also decided to cut back on my weekend work. Weekend bookings already taken up until this date will be honoured. My grooming business has happily flourished recently, and I need to give priority to the one which gives me a more stable financial income and helps to support my family. Weekend bookings will now only be accepted where it is part of a booking for the previous week (for example a Monday to Monday holiday, or Wednesday to Wednesday, etc...)

There will probably be some teething problems while we all get used to this new set up, so if you have any questions at all, please feel free to continue messaging me.

Finally, please can I respectfully ask that where possible, messages to me are kept to the guidelines of 7.30am to 10pm Monday to Saturday - I am seeing an increase in some customers messaging me at very random times and I'm not on 24 hour call! 🤣

I've been looking after Misty for the last few days. Last week she managed to get herself into a bit of bother with a neighbouring cat and ended up on the extension roof and unable to get down. So, I started a rescue mission! 😆

With the help of a small step ladder, I was able to climb up onto a raised part of the garden, put my arms up to the roof and grab her. She grumbled slightly, but I couldn't leave her outside on her own all night 🙈

Those of you who know me well know that I believe that cats should stay in at night anyway, so I was relieved that I was able to get her in and keep her safe.

Such a beauty, but such a naughty little minx! 🤣🤣🤣

Merry Christmas to all my lovely customers! 😸🎄

Thanks to Covid, I started this year with a blank diary and zero bookings. But once the restrictions started to lift, work become a lot busier and I needn't have worried.

Thank you all so much for supporting my little business and keeping me busy - it means such a lot to me that you all trust me with your adorable fur babies.

Here's (hopefully) to a better Christmas and New Year than the last one - Happy Christmas from our house to yours, from two of my three girls, Heidi & Lola.

Hope you're all OK 😻 Just wanted to pop a little message on to say that if you're waiting for an invoice from me, further info, or a reply to a text or WhatsApp message, please bear with me.

Some of you might already know that both of my parents have recently gone into care, and I've also been looking after their cat, while I'm waiting for her to be rehomed.

Also, I think it might be time for a new phone, as my current one is struggling with battery charge and is usually flat by tea time! 😹

Some interesting info here about cats and predatory behaviour/play 😻👇🐾

Cats and Predation:
Cats are both a prey & predator species. They hunt small prey animals multiple times a day and movement will typically trigger predatory behaviour. Cats are more likely to hunt at dawn & dusk when their prey animals are most active (known as ‘crepuscular’ 🤓)
A recent study found that feeding cats a high meat content food reduces predatory behaviour, as well as 5-10 minutes of daily object play- giving them an outlet for their natural hunting instinct. All cats can be tempted by the right toy/movement of the toy- I know elderly, blind, 3 legged cats who will still enjoy a little play tailored to their needs. If the toy is moved to mimic a prey animal (hiding, freezing, running away from the cat instead of dangling in their face- I’ve never seen a mouse jump around a cat’s face enticing them to catch them 🐭 🤨 ) you can initiate a paw bat, or dilated pupils following the movement- and that’s the start of your predatory action sequence 💪🏻 Great for weight loss & general enrichment, not just to reduce predation.
Other ways of reducing predatory behaviour include collars, double bells on collars (although the study mentioned above found bells made no difference to predatory behaviour, anecdotally I think it can help), and avoid feeding the birds in your garden. Of course keeping cats indoors will eliminate any predatory behaviour but this raises welfare concerns for the cats involved in many cases & is a debate for another day 😏 There is also no clear scientific evidence that the number of birds killed by cats is causing bird populations to decline - the biggest declines are caused by habitat change or loss.

I'm sure many of you must be aware of this, as its been all over social media recently, but just in case you haven't heard, there is an urgent recall happening with the following brands of dry cat food:-

If your cat is currently eating any of these, advice is to stop immediately and contact your vet for blood tests. Pancytopenia comes on very quickly and sadly is usually fatal 😿😿😿
