Kennel Club Bronze Good Citizen Class at Barrow Haven. We have a couple of spaces still available. The course lasts for 6 weeks and is 7:30 - 8:30pm every Tuesday from the 27th August. We prepare you and your dog to pass the external Good Citizen assessment. Along with a few handy tricks and life skills we concentrate on loose lead walking amongst other people and dogs, recall, manners, grooming and examination. The course costs £95.

Ever wondered why a puppy's behavior seems erratic during adolescence, which occurs between six months and 18 months of age?

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, s*x hormones are changing which effects the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to modulate sensory processing and subsequent behavior.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control.

So what does this mean? This could mean that your dog, who used to come when called, suddenly cannot. This could mean that your dog, who didn't jump up on guests, suddenly does. Your dog that walked nicely on leash is now pulling. Or perhaps it seems like some days your dog responds to behaviors you ask of them, and some days they don't, without any rhyme or reason.

We also see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, frustration and impatience sometimes cause us to act unpredictably.

This adds to your puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for puppies to adjust.

By understanding this we can gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we can help create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best selves.

Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme - Bronze Award

New classes starting on Saturdays and Mondays at Calmer Dog Training, Marsh Lane, Barrow Haven. DN19 7ES.

We will cover the Bronze Award criteria with a few other life skills to help your dog. Assessment is by an external Kennel Club Assessor.

6 Week Class costs £95. Message for the criteria and to book.

Saturday @ 2:30pm
2nd, 9th, 23rd March and 6th, 13th and 20th April 2024. No training on the 16th or 30th March

Monday @ 2pm

This is what a previous “trainer” wanted to put on a dog I’m working with. A tiny toy dog. A dog who weighs 3 kgs at most.

A great big man using a tool expressly designed to cause discomfort/pain to control a dog who weighs a few kilos isn’t training. It’s bullying, it’s abusive and it needs to stop.

Thankfully this dog’s owner said ‘no’ and walked away. When a trainer tells you you have to use pain or discomfort to teach your dog it’s your right (and I’d say your responsibility) to say ‘no’. Advocate for your dog. Choose wisely.

Summer Puppy Classes Puppy classes run for 6 consecutive weeks and includes a WhatsApp group for support and videos to help you proactive the the unique you learn. Classes cover all puppy behaviours and how to manage them, basic cues, confidence building, good manners and helping your puppy to make the right choices. We spend time helping your puppy to want to be with you so they come when called and lots of practice walking nicely on a lead. The aim of opine puppy classes is to prepare your puppy for adolescence and to bve a confident young pup. All summer classes are held at our field in Barrow Haven on Monday evenings and start at 6pm for an hour. Summer Dates: 17th April to 29th May (no training on the 1st May) 2 spaces available 5th June to 10th July 17th July to 21st August 4th September to the 9th Ocotober Classes cost £95 payable in advance.

Fabulous night with the Calmer Sniffers last night. They have been practising their The National Nosework Association ORTs (Odour Recognition Tests). They had their first try on the T shape for the Enhanced Level along with their first try with distraction scents. Very clever dogs!

So proud of the loose lead walking achieved by the puppies in such a short time.

Wow the Calmer Sniffers worked very hard last night with all those tables and chairs! (Full 12min video can be seen at https://youtu.be/Gfb6LRGLxdw There was so many nice clips it was hard to cut them down for Facebook!) Well done sniffers!

Hoopers - a new sport for Dogs

Hoopers is a new, low impact dog sport which is fun for all ages of dogs and handlers. The code of ethics from Canine Hoopers UK is that no dog or handler is prevented from taking part in either training or competitions. Instead of physical dexterity, the challenge of Hoopers is entirely focused on the ability of the handler and the dog to work together as a smooth flowing team at a distance.

Canine Hoopers UK was formed in 2017. Canine Hoopers UK strives to protect the longer-term well-being of the dog by maintaining flowing courses of low impact obstacles and aims to be an inclusive dog sport making sure that this sport is accessible to all dogs and handlers, in particular those handlers with limited mobility. Canine Hoopers UK are so dedicated to access to all dogs and people that if an accredited instructor was found to refuse access they would be removed from the accredited list.

All equipment must comply with Canine Hoopers UK measurements to ensure dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds can participate without having to take sharp turns, bend down for tunnels or hoops and run at a natural pace for that dog. Accredited Instructors are tested not only on their ability to train the sport but also to be able to put together courses that are safe, challenging and focus on distance control. Hoopers is great fun and at the start 3 pieces of equipment are used:
