City Vets Animal Nursing Placement opportunity for people wishing to become Veterinary Nurses
What is veterinary nursing?
A Veterinary Nurse (VN) works as a member of the veterinary team, providing expert nursing care for sick and injured pets. As a qualified VN, you will be responsible for the welfare, comfort and recovery of pets that may have undergone trauma, surgery or are receiving treatment for medical conditions. VNs also play a significant role in the education of owners about maintaining the health of their pets. They carry out technical work and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures, under veterinary direction.
Veterinary nursing is a rewarding career that offers variety and daily contact with pets and their owners. Veterinary Nurses are involved in the supportive care of pets receiving treatment within a veterinary practice. They are trained to a high level, enabling them to work in all aspects of the veterinary practice environment from reception through to the operating theatre.
Work experience placements
Veterinary nursing is a popular career choice to people of all ages. There is no age limit when you can start training.
City Vets have a limited number of voluntary nursing placements available for the 2021 – 22 academic year.
Gaining a placement is very competitive and demand often outweighs availability.
If you wish to complete the Level 3 nursing course then this is a valuable opportunity to work in a practice that may be able to offer you employment at the end of a successful placement and then support you through the Level 3 course. Most applicants fail to gain entry as a result of not having a Practice to support them.
Our minimum requirements for placement in City Vets would be grade B at GCSE in Maths and English, plus 4 other GCSE at grade C or above. For potential students who meet these criteria we would arrange a face-to-face meeting at our Head Office. The next step in the process would then be a one-week unpaid trial in a City Vets practice. This trial is a fantastic opportunity to experience the day-to-day activities and get a real understanding for if it is the role for you. It also gives us the opportunity to review applicants’ skills and attitude. If this trial goes well then, we may offer you a voluntary placement which would fit with your other work and time commitments.
