Return to the scene of the crime!

Well not actually a crime but last week Eli had a pretty stressful experience that with all the planning in the world was unavoidable.

An off lead dog came charging down the street at us and whilst I tried my best to manage Eli and his responses the owner couldn’t get hold of the dog.

It ran around Eli in circles barking and charging which he found stressful but there was also the added stress of the owner grabbing towards him as she tried to get hold of her dog.

Thankfully amongst all the commotion he heard my voice and looked to me whilst staying still so the owner could get her dog.

Today we went back to that very spot and understandably he was a bit more on edge.

Last week and today we played all of our fun food chasing games, I used all of the positive words I’ve taught him mean good things and I’ve never been happier to have built up such a trust with a dog.

We can’t always avoid negative experiences but with enough planning we can get through them without lasting effect.

Super proud of this sensitive big lad 💚🌿

A new location for Franks walk today.

I’m trying to find a place that’s quiet enough to allow him to settle into the new environment before working around dogs.

Today we took things slowly but he was pretty over aroused in the new place.
To add to this the falling leaves are adding more movement for him to have to check on.

I’m looking for connection when we are walking as this tells me he’s working with me rather than being focussed on reaching the next p*e spot. A common behaviour in males dogs that struggle with other dogs.

We spent a short amount of time pottering near his house at the end of the session so he could decompress.

Keeping going with the foundation work whilst gently exposing him to new places 💚🐶

Second session with Attie and I’m delighted to hear how well things are going.

Her humans are feeling much more confident and the communication between them is wonderful to see.

Attie is allowed to watch more and subsequently we are seeing less “reactive” behaviour.

Today we had a mix of building on those observations and some play.

Looking forward to our next session to see the progress 💚🐶

Walk Train Play

🐾Frank and I had another successful visit to the park. A bit quieter today which is good as we could spend some time getting used to being in the park. Some environmental influence today as there was a good strong wind. Being mindful of this meant we could work on the scent of dogs along with the visual aspect of them.

🐾Eli and I had a nice walk to the park with some work around disengaging from dogs. He did well despite some challenges from staring dogs.
We then had some fun in the garden with his own game which is to look into the bag of toys together before he removes one at a time! 💚🐶

First session with Junior (yes he is as cute and fluffy in real life!)

He’s only been in his new home for a few weeks and at only 5 months old is just learning about the world.

His human contacted me as he’s picking up and eating things in the garden some of which are unsafe.

Today we looked at all the possible whys and what we can teach to ensure his needs are met and that we are working with him and not against him.

Looking forward to supporting this new family ok their learning journey 💚🐶

Last session for now with Glen.

I’m delighted in the progress and so pleased that he’s now a happier boy.

His humans have done an excellent job implementing the training and keeping detailed diaries so we could adjust all the points of Glens day we needed to to provide balance and ensure each aspect of his needs are met.

Well done all of you 💚🐶

Walk Train Play

🐾 Frank and I went to the park today to see if we can get a bit more work done around his response to dogs. He did really well despite some challenges when dog walkers with large groups entered the environment. Some work at my end to ensure that I set him up better next time.

🐾 Lola’s last day today and we had a lovely street walk. At the half way point she did regress back to hard pulling but engaging her in a game we were soon back to walking together with consideration of each other. I’ll miss hanging out with her!

🐾 Eli and I had a wander through the park and along the street so we could encounter dogs. Still working on asking him to ignore and walk away which he’s doing really well with. For the last part of our time we played in the garden including mouse which he’s really enjoying now 💚🐶

Consent!

This week I’ve been in the company of 8 dogs including my own Leo.

Out of that number only 3 have actually asked me to offer touch to them. Those 3 are my own dog Leo and Frank and Eli who I see each week for the walk train play sessions.

Cassie and Lola who are also on the walk train play sessions are delighted to see me but would much rather different interactions.

Yesterday I met 3 dogs who struggle with strange people. All of them were happy to interact with me after a while but not one of them asked me or said it was ok for me to put my hands on them.

Touch is a very personal thing and also a very human thing.
I certainly wouldn’t be happy if some random stranger came up to me and put their hands on me so our dogs shouldn’t have to put up with that either.

If your a person that lives with a dog be their advocate and don’t allow them to be touched without consent and if your a person who doesn’t live with a dog learn to know when a dog is saying it’s ok to offer touch 💚🐶

First session with Ollie.

He has been showing some unwanted behaviours when “gran” tries to put his lead on to go for a walk so we are exploring what’s causing this.

Outside he’s feeling quite overwhelmed by a lot of things and this comes out as loud barking and lunging forwards.

We can’t say for certain a that’s causing the behaviour around being put on lead but it’s a good place to start.

Today we looked at providing a strong support network and reinforcing him for coming to find us.

We also looked at interaction with a new lead. Breaking things right down into easy steps and allowing consent to having the lead put on.

Great start with this smart little dog 💚🐶

First session with Rudi.

He’s a sweet young dog who finds himself in a busy environment full of people coming and going.

This is stressful for Rudi and he will bark, lunge forward, retreat then repeat the pattern.

Today we looked at changing that story.

Starting with coming to find his human for support.
We also looked at how the people around him can help change how he feels about their coming and going.

He’s a lucky boy as he has lots of support and I’m sure with be feeling much happier in no time 💚🐶

First session with Attie.

She’s a sensitive girl who finds people, particularly men and children, challenging when she’s on lead walks.

Today we started her on her training journey.

Observing her behaviour and allowing her the time she need to look and assess.

Excellent work for a first session today and lots of subtle behaviour for us to observe and respond to 💚🐶

Walk Train Play

🐾Frank did so well today when dogs were in the environment. Today he disengaged and started sniffing the ground. This is what dogs would normally do once they’ve assessed and it shows our scent games are helping the process.

🐾Cassie is now delighted to see me after I’ve figured out the perfect walk for her. She likes the routine of going the same route and my job is to throw the treats to the right places so she can hunt them.

🐾Lola was back after an extra weeks break. Today we had lots of fun including some work around her new muzzle. I’ve built on pieces of work to prepare for this including a collar hold and asking her to stick her nose into things. Today we paired the two and she was allowed to say “not right now”

🐾Eli is feeling a bit more sensitive around dogs after a negative experience so we had a look at his response today. After watching then disengaging we played some scent games to get his head back down and exploring the park with his nose rather than his eyes.

Lots of fun for this lovely bunch of dogs 💚🐶

Walk Train Play

A bit of a sad one today as it’s Rafferty and Tuckers last day with me 🥺

Despite that we had lots of fun. Some off lead play with Rafferty on his walk and some nice gentle activities for Tucker who’s recovering from his eye surgery.

I’m going to really miss these two brilliant boys 💚🐶

Continuing training with Glen today.

His humans have been keeping excellent diaries so we know what small tweaks we need to keep him progressing.

A review of sheep ball to start then a new game we can use to teach self management of arousal levels.

We then returned home to look at a game of mouse but had to put our training into practise looking at a stepped approach to our interactions to help him “come down” from high arousal.

Excellent work as always 💚🐶

Catching up with Eli this afternoon and after a walk in the park I introduced him to the training equipment.

It’s taken a while but our relationship is now at the stage where I can start working on some things with him.

After a good old explore of the bag we had a short game of mouse which he’s enjoying 🐶💚

Walk Train Play

Another great session with Lola today.

After a walk and some practice on our connected walking we worked on some play.

I’m asking her to be observant of my body language during play and using this to help lead her to a break.

A crucial skill of arousal management that helps in so many parts of a dogs life 💚🐶

Walk Train Play

Cassie and Frank will now both be spending time with me on a Wednesday morning.

Lots of sniffing today as it’s still quite warm.

The perfect weather to enjoy a slower pace and some hunting for treats 💚🐶

Walk Train Play

Rafferty did an excellent job today.

He struggles when he doesn’t know what you want him to do and will throw all of his behaviours at you and if that doesn’t work turn the barking.

Today we looked at the known paw target but the target was at a distance from the food. I’ve worked on this over time moving the platform a bit further each time.

Today was the first time he’s managed to reset himself, move away from the food and get into the desired position.

Well done Rafferty this is a huge achievement 💚🐶

Continuing on with Glens training this afternoon and some interesting points for us to discuss.

Today we wanted to look at some body awareness exercises as a way to boost Glens confidence and to have an activity to work on if he’s been overstimulated by the outside environment on previous walks/days.

Glen was showing us how much he can cope with when it comes to change or learning something new.

Today we didn’t get as many activities explored as we planned but we more importantly got to help Glen through frustration around learning.

Pairing a new behaviour with one he knew really well we kept him being successful.

Excellent work today and some real crucial insights 💚🐶

Second session with Winston this morning and we met at the park.

Today we were looking at his interactions with dogs.
He’s doing a great job at checking in with his humans so we adjusted our body language, position and how we reinforced him to encourage coming away from dogs.

He had a couple of close up interactions with dogs that went really well and we moved him off after a brief hello to ensure a positive experience.

We also looked at some play using the long line to give him freedom of movement. We explored what game Winston wants us to offer and he had a brilliant time parading around with the toys.

Great work from this lovely boy and his humans 💚🐶

Walks for Rafferty and Tucker today and a chance to explore their behaviour around people and dogs in the environment.

Both boys did a great job at checking in.
Looking to the humans when the environment changes is an excellent skills for both the friendly dog and one who’s not so sure 💚🐶

Walk Train Play

Frank was very switched on today after some negative incidents with dogs this week.

We took a slightly different route and just took things slowly. It was obvious when dogs had been in the environment recently as some of his old behaviours started to come out.

We took the opportunity to work on our connection activities we used when we were first getting to know each other.

Still lots of happy wiggly bums despite him having higher stress hormone levels today 💚🐶

Walk Train Play

Eli and I explored a different part of the park today which was quite wild but had some great smells!

We were also working or some new cues that I can use when he’s focussed on dogs or people in the environment.

At the end of our time together we returned to the garden to do a short game of mouse before working at the threshold to the house.

We worked on approaching together and then him going in and out with me outside initially and then in the doorway.

No issues and some things we can explore for strangers coming in the future 💚🐶
