Ethylene glycol is a common substance used in most antifreeze solutions which may be added to:

❄️Car engines
❄️Snow globes
❄️Water features
❄️Radiators

🐈‍⬛Unfortunately, ethylene glycol is highly toxic to cats (even in very small doses) and spillages can be easily lapped up from the floor or groomed off of a cat's soiled paws or coat.

🏠Leakeages in garages, sheds, driveways or even inside the home are easy to miss. Antifreeze is often clear, but may be coloured green or other colours.

🐈‍⬛Antifreeze tastes sweet and although cats cannot taste sweet flavours, they seem to be attracted to the flavour of antifreeze.

⚠️Ethylene glycol toxicity is incredibly dangerous and often fatal in cats. Treatment needs to occur immediately and no later than 3 hours after ingestion if any sort of recovery is to be made, otherwise euthanasia is usually the kindest option.

Signs of ethylene glycol toxicity include:

▪️Vomiting
▪️Lethargy
▪️Depression
▪️Ataxia (wobbly, abnormal gait)
▪️Increased thirst and urination
▪️Increased heart and respiratory rate

🩺Vets may treat affected cats with aggressive intravenous fluid therapy, fomepizole or ethanol, but treatment needs to start quickly for the cat to recover. Emergency veterinary treatment, hospitalisation and intensive nursing care is always required.

😿Eventually, untreated cats develop serious and life threatening issues such as metabolic acidosis and kidney failure, by which time they are highly unlikely to recover.

😿Evidence of calcium oxalate crystals present in the cat's urine and a cessation of urine production paired with significant renal damage indicate a grave prognosis.

⚠️If you suspect your cat may have ingested antifreeze, even if you are not sure it's best to contact your veterinary practice IMMEDIATELY. Time really is of the essence in these cases, so it's always best to be sure. Your veterinary team will advise you, so just ask and they will be happy to help.

A further update with regards to the link of Pancytopenia in cats and certain cat foods:

Fold Hill issued the recall notice on Tuesday evening as a voluntary and precautionary measure.

The company is investigating a possible connection between their food consumption and Pancytopenia, a condition in which the bone marrow fails.

A spokesperson said: “If you have bought any of the above products as detailed above, do not feed them to your cat.

"Instead check if you have bought the affected products and batch codes and the use-by and best before dates and write down the batch code for reference at home and return the products to the store for a full refund with or without a receipt."

For Applaws products it is only packs with a Best Before Date of Dec 2022 to Best Before Date of June 2023 and a site reference code of GB218E5009.

For AVA it is all batches and best before dates

For Sainsburys’ products it is all batches and best before dates

If your cat has been eating these diets, it may be wise to contact your vet to discuss it with them and possibly run some precautionary blood tests.

However, it is important to note that this is still a precaution and no definite link or cause has been found yet.
