The Unseen Barrier - Past Hurt Creates Future Fear

We can often see a dog barking at a stranger or another dog, lunging on a lead, or hiding under the table. But do we ever stop and think this might all be linked to a memory?

For a dog, there is no such thing as an over reaction—only a survival reaction.

Dogs can associate a specific sound, smell, or movement that was once linked to pain, confusion, stress or neglect. Their brain hardwires a warning system to ensure it never happens again. When they react, they aren't being "bad"; they are trying to stay safe from a threat only they can see.

The good news is that whilst fear is a survival mechanism, it can be unlearned. With patience, positive reinforcement, calm consistency and a safe environment we can help them rewrite their future.

Let’s stop asking "What's wrong with this dog?" and start asking "What happened to this dog?"

To 'Snerdle'

Meaning to nestle and snuggle under the covers and delay starting the day.....what a brilliant word!

I think we can all relate to this the Monday after Christmas, with a definite need to snuggle for a bit longer.

Sunday Self Care

Be more like Bear today, take time out to have some fun with friends, work out how toys seem to explode and find those moments to create special memories.

Gorgeous Bear enjoyed his first Christmas with his family who adore him, and he was a hit with everyone....and we can see why.

I always loved this dog in kennels, and knew that as soon as he got into a home he would flourish and find his paws, which he did from the very beginning.

Whatever you are doing today with your dogs, relax and remember your dog will have had as much to cope with mentally as you did. So don't overdo it, let all of you recover and enjoy taking today at a slow pace.

'Just Because We Choose To Do Nothing, Doesn't Mean That Nothing Will Happen Because We Did Nothing' Craig Lounsbrough

Christmas is not full of fun and joy for everyone, in fact it can be the exact opposite which involves the pets in the home too.

You can't always tell from the outside what is going on, and much can happen behind closed doors. But if you suspect anything at all, don't be British and decide that it isn't your problem or that you mustn't get involved.

Contact the relevant authorities, be the voice for the vulnerable and know you did the right thing. To do and say nothing enables situations to continue...and nobody wants that on their mind ever.

Being Merry at Christmas

When we drink, our movements can become less predictable, our voices might change pitch, and the coordination can become clumsy.

Erratic movements or "loud" energy can put a dog on edge, as can the smell of alcohol. They may not understand why their usually calm owner is suddenly behaving differently. If you have a number of people around, then of course this intensifies.

Some dogs become anxious or protective when they sense their owner isn't acting like themselves. Equally, some dogs learn that a tipsy owner is more likely to drop food or give extra treats, leading them to hover more than usual!

Clearly, I am not saying don't have fun. But I want you to be aware that dogs sense the changes in us and not all will like it.

If you have a party planned, then give your dog the choice of being elsewhere in the home. We don't need Great Auntie Mildred deciding she needs to intensely cuddle your dog after a couple of sherries, and your dog being really uncomfortable and snapping.

A Christmas Communication Recap

It is so important to understand that communication is a two way street between us and our dog.

Body language, movement and sound are a huge part of how dogs communicate, as well as understand what is going on around them.

That includes us, and what we do, how we move, how we act. We must understand that a lot of what a dog does can directly relate to how we are, or our interactions with them, because they respond to it.

This obviously includes children too. All of these sheets can be downloaded, printed out, put on the fridge, forwarded to the children - whatever works best for you.

Take the time to look and see what can worry, excite and scare a dog. Then we reduce the likelihood of taking anything the dog does personally.
