The festive season is full of delicious food and sparkly decorations, but some of our favourite Christmas treats can be dangerous for our dogs. Here are a few things to watch out for:

šŸš« Chocolate
šŸš« Alcohol
šŸš« Blue cheese
šŸš« Macadamia nuts
šŸš« Mince pies
šŸš« Decorations (tinsel, baubles, fairy lights)
šŸš« Stuffing (especially with onion)
šŸš« Christmas pudding or fruitcake
šŸš« Cooked Bones
šŸš« Grapes

Even small amounts of some of these can cause serious problems, so keep them out of reach and make sure your guests know the rules too! Instead, treat your pup to dog-safe festive snacks or enrichment activities.

Christmas Game Idea: Musical Sits! šŸŽ¶

Sometimes we all need a day off from walksā€”especially on those cold, rainy winter days. But that doesnā€™t mean we canā€™t have some festive fun with our dogs at home!

Today, weā€™ve been playing musical sits to Christmas music, and itā€™s been a hit (well, for me and the dogā€¦ the brussel sprouts we used for ā€œfind itā€ werenā€™t such a crowd-pleaser for the humans in the house! šŸ˜…).

Musical sits is such a simple but fun game for the festive seasonā€”it keeps your dogā€™s brain busy and brings a little Christmas cheer to training time. Give it a go, and let me know if your dog has as much fun with it as we did! šŸŽ…šŸ¾

Taking your dog or puppy to meet Santa at the local garden centre might sound like a fun festive outing, but is it the right choice for your dog? Here's what to consider before booking that visit:
1ļøāƒ£ Is your dog comfortable around strangers, loud noises, and busy environments? Meeting Santa often means encountering new sounds, crowds, and even unusual smells (hello, reindeer!). For puppies and less confident dogs, this can quickly become overwhelming.

2ļøāƒ£ Garden centres and Santa setups are filled with distractionsā€”bright lights, children running around, and decorations galore. For some dogs, this can be a sensory overload. Ask yourself: Is this environment enjoyable for your dog, or is it more for you?

3ļøāƒ£ Remember, your dogā€™s well-being should always come first. If they seem hesitant or unsure, donā€™t push them into the situation. Respect their body language and give them the choice to approach or not.

Sometimes, staying home with a festive photo op in the garden or by the tree can be just as fun and much less stressful for everyone! šŸŽ„

Christmas is exciting, but it can also be a lot for puppies to handle! šŸŽ…

Puppies thrive on rhythm and routine, and when that gets disrupted, you might end up with an overtired, bitey pup practicing unwanted behaviours like jumping or chasing the kids.

To avoid overwhelm:
- Set up a quiet rest zone away from the festivities and practice using it ahead of time.
- Stick to routines as much as possibleā€”regular meals, naps, and toilet breaks make a huge difference.
- Donā€™t pass your puppy around like a Christmas parcel. Let them choose who they want to interact with, and keep greetings gentle and respectful.

By taking these steps, youā€™ll help your puppy stay calm and enjoy their first Christmas with the family. šŸŽ„

Itā€™s too late for full firework desensitisation this year, but thereā€™s still plenty we can do to help our dogs feel safe and secure! šŸŽ‡

With firework season around the corner, here are a few tips to keep your dog calm:
- Create a cosy, safe space where they can retreat if they feel overwhelmed.
- Play calming music or white noise to help muffle the sounds.
- Avoid leaving them alone if possible, and keep them indoors during peak firework times.

Remember, itā€™s never too early to start planning for next year! Desensitisation to firework sounds takes time, so consider beginning gradual sound exposure a few months ahead of next yearā€™s season.

Stay calm, stay prepared, and letā€™s help our dogs feel secure during the festivities!

Halloween costumes can be adorable, but if your puppy hasnā€™t been taught to comfortably accept having something put on their body, a costume may feel pretty awful to them. šŸ‘‡

Like anything being put on a dog or pupā€™s body, they have to learn to enjoy it. Costumes can feel restrictive and uncomfortable, they often have things flapping off them or restrict view.

To a dog, this will feel really unnatural and could scare them. šŸ‘Ž

Before popping them into an outfit, consider if youā€™ve done the work to teach them to happily accept something on their body, and whether itā€™s worth the risk for a cute photo of them being scared and potentially never a wanting to accept something that could one day be more vital to their lives, such as a protective gear, something to keep them warm or a harness for safety.

If youā€™d still like a spooky touch, try something simple like a Halloween-themed collar. It keeps them comfortable while joining in the funā€”without the stress of a full costume. šŸŽƒ

Remember, costumes often make rustling noises or have attachments that might frighten or frustrate them. šŸ˜£

Keeping it simple ensures your pup feels safe and can enjoy Halloween just as much as we do! šŸ‘

Itā€™s easy to quickly pull a toy away from your puppy, but this can actually create negative associations with playtime. When we sn**ch toys, it can leave puppies feeling frustrated or even possessive over their toys, which is the last thing we want!

Instead, let your puppy enjoy their toy and try swapping it with something else they love, like a treat or another toy. This helps teach them to trust hands and that giving something up leads to a positive outcome, rather than making them feel like theyā€™re losing out. It also encourages good manners and helps prevent guarding behaviours down the line.

So, next time youā€™re playing, remember: no sn**ching! Letā€™s make playtime a fun, relaxed experience for everyone.

Where Should My Puppy Be Sleeping? šŸ¾

Letā€™s be honest, puppy sleep is probably going to hit you like a bus! šŸ˜… Itā€™s completely normal for it to take a few nights (or longer!) for your puppy to settle in.

In those early days, your pup will need comfort and reassurance while they adjust to their new home. Keeping them close to you at night can help ease their anxiety and make them feel secure. But remember, consistency is keyā€”picking a cosy, designated spot and sticking to it will help set them up for success.

Donā€™t be surprised if there are a few sleepless nights at first! Itā€™s all part of the process. Just be patient, and soon your puppy will be sleeping soundly through the night (hopefully giving you a bit more rest too!).

If youā€™re struggling with puppy sleep or need advice on settling your new addition, drop me a messageā€”I'm here to help! āœØ

Training your puppy doesnā€™t have to be overwhelming! šŸ¾

Here are my top three tips to make sure both you and your puppy are set up for success:

šŸ‘‰ Keep it fun! Training should never feel like a chore. Enjoy the process, and itā€™ll strengthen your bond.
šŸ‘‰ Keep it short! Puppies have short attention spans, so keep sessions to just a few minutes at a time.
šŸ‘‰ Pick the right time! Choose a moment when youā€™re both in the mood to train, so youā€™re set up for success.

Have you tried these tips? Let me know how theyā€™ve worked for you and your pup in the comments below!

Why I Donā€™t Recommend Puppy Pads šŸ¾

Puppy pads might seem convenient, but they can seriously sabotage your toilet training efforts and confuse your puppy. Weā€™re trying to teach our pups to go outside, yet we put something down inside that encourages them to goā€”talk about mixed messages!

Some pads even have pheromones that attract puppies to urinate on them, making it even more confusing. In most cases, using puppy pads only prolongs the toilet training process, making it harder for your puppy to understand where they should really be going.

There are rare instances where a reusable pad near the exit door might help, such as in apartments with no immediate outdoor access, but even then, itā€™s best to use them sparingly. And letā€™s be honest, more often than not, puppies just see them as flappy toys to shred and attack!

If you want to make toilet training smoother and quicker, itā€™s best to ditch the pads and focus on consistent outdoor routines.

How do you feel about puppy pads? Tell me in the comments below!

This is a dangerous misconception. Even the most "predictable" dogs can react unpredictably when left alone with children. Itā€™s essential to remember that dogs and young children both need guidance and supervision to ensure safe and positive interactions.

Children may not always understand a dogā€™s body language, and what might seem like playful behaviour to them could actually be a sign of discomfort or stress from the dog. Supervision is key to preventing accidents and teaching both children and dogs how to interact safely and respectfully.

Always keep an eye on interactions between dogs and kids, and create a safe environment where both can learn and grow together.
