Poultry registration reminder...Action needed before October 1st 2024!

An important change is due to be introduced for all poultry keepers in England, Wales and Scotland which comes into effect from October 1st this year.

From that date, all poultry keepers will need to officially register their birds, regardless of flock size. The changes are designed to help manage potential disease outbreaks, such as avian influenza, and limit any spread.

Previously, only people with more than 50 birds were required to register, although keepers with fewer birds can register voluntarily. The new measures announced by Defra mean that registration will be mandatory even for someone with just one bird.

The registration rule comes into force on October 1st and poultry keepers will be required to review their register entry annually thereafter to ensure that their details are up to date. Bird keepers will need to provide information, including their contact details, the location where birds are kept and details of the birds (species, number and what they are kept for).

As well as helping manage disease outbreaks, the information on the register will also be used to identify all bird keepers in disease control zones, allowing for more effective surveillance and enabling zones to be lifted at the earliest opportunity.

Happy New Year everyone, we hope you enjoyed the festive season ?
It's now annual census time for all breed registrars to report our bird numbers to The Rare Poultry Society (RPS) our governing body as @ 31/12/23.
We need a record of numbers birds kept in order to report our progress as a breed and continue our registration for disease protection The Breeds at Risk Register.
Please e-mail me at [email protected]
details of your birds hatched in 2023 m/f and older birds m/f, please notify of other colours kept (blue or white) or bantams m/f
Some birds are available so please let me know what you are looking for and I can put you in touch.
I am also interested to learn your ideas for the future, i.e. "I would like to help increasing numbers of other colours or bantams" or "I would like to start showing (when/if shows start), hopefully not to many of you are downsizing. Please let me know your progress, plans and feelings. If you have already registered your census details with the RPS please copy your numbers to me.
Many thanks Paul - Breed Registrar
