PSA: Hackles
Hackles do not = aggression ❌
Hackles = adrenalin ✅
Here, Luna is playing with her very bestest friend. You can tell that it is playful because they take regular breaks and they don’t actually put their teeth on each other. They take turns being the ‘aggressor’ and the ‘victim’. Newkie is a loud player so it can sound pretty ferocious, but it isn’t.
One thing that is very prominent here are Luna’s hackles. Luna has always had very expressive hackles ever since she was a puppy. The official term for raised hackles is ‘piloerection’ and is when the musculi arrectores pilorum (small muscles that are attached to the hair follicle) contract, causing the hair to stand up. This is the same as goosebumps in people!
This process can have many different uses. In many animals, it is used as a method of maintaining proper blood flow during exercise and can be a way to cool themselves down using minimal energy by adjusting the thickness of the upper dermis of the skin and allowing radiation and convection cooling. It can also be used as a defence mechanism, allowing animals to make themselves look bigger and more intimidating when threatened (think hedgehog!).
It can also be caused by a response in the nervous system. This is the most common way we will see piloerection in our dogs. Increased levels of adrenalin will stimulate these muscles and cause the hair to stand up. The reason for adrenalin spikes can be very varied, as we know. Think about all the different scenarios that have given you goosebumps in your life; did you feel angry and threatened in all of them? I would hazard a guess that the answer is no. Some scientists believe that there is a correlation between the positioning of piloerection and the emotional state, but this has not been studied thoroughly enough.
Raised hackles CAN be a sign of aggression in dogs, but they are not a sole predictor of the dog’s state of mind. It is highly important that context is taken in

Shiloh and Pippa were very full of beans this afternoon, enjoying a good Chase. The others were more chilled out, just enjoying the sunshine.
Here’s rocket dog Rocky, cutting the big dogs off at the pass so he can keep up. Such a clever wee boy. He always leaves me smiling.
There was no photographing this bunch today. They just didn’t stay still. I must have watched them run round this holly bush half a dozen times before I even started to film them.
Just look at the admiration on Finnick’s face, he adores Amber and Lottie.💕💕
With the gentle calm of the woods left behind us, the freestyle wrestling ensued. It was all in good fun of course and everyone behaved in an entirely sporting manner.
Cuddle fest was held in the woods this morning. A jolly time was had by all, and Nicos, bless his little heart made sure I felt part of the fun. 💕
These pups just have so much fun. Dexter can’t be bothered to run around too much so he just barks his encouragement to feel part of the fun.
Pippa and Shiloh are becoming firm friends. Pippa just loves to be chased around and Shiloh is only too happy to oblige. It’s joyful to watch, and look at little Luna joining in. 💕
Newkie tried hard to humour me this morning but couldn’t quite hide his irritation having to walk up these steps. Sorry Newkie.🤪
Very busy time in the woods for these guys, so many things to sniff and places to investigate.
Nicos, Rocky, Pippa and Dexter in action. The energy is amazing, just look at them go. The two little dogs were determined to keep up.
Happy days with doggy friends. ❤️
When your trying to get over the log and a friend rushes over to help…
These guys should all be exhausted tonight, they ran around like this for the entire walk. I had to take a couple of videos as they rarely stayed still long enough for a photograph.
This just makes me smile. 💕
