Cuteness Alert!!

This adorable fluffball Riley visited our March practice earlier this week. She came in for her first vaccinations and to be microchipped, she was extremely calm and took it all in her stride.

Our first Nene babies

Peaches came into our Wisbech practice at the end of last week as an emergency. She was giving birth and unfortunately one of her kittens became stuck, her owners took her to the Wisbech practice with plans for her to have a caesarean, when she got to the practice thankfully she was able to pass the kitten. She then spent the morning with the team and gave birth to four more happy healthy kittens. Congratulations Peaches 😍

With all the excitement going on we forgot to show you May's Brave Pet of the Month!

Duggie’s story is a true “rags to riches” tale.

His road to recovery had a shaky start, as he was homeless and on the look out for the kindness of strangers for food, love and care. He found just that in the form of his (now) new Mummy at her place of work. Duggie continued to hang around showing just how charming and cute he could be. This had the desired effect, and he was fast becoming a familiar and welcomed face.

One day, instead of coming for just food and love, he came asking for help as he had a nasty wound on his back. Even though she was not yet his Mummy, his primary care giver (and favourite person) scooped him up and brought him straight to us.

The vet gave Duggie the once over and his general health was good! On examination of the wound, the vet surmised that it appeared to be two abscesses that had burst and become infected. Given the position of the wound, it is likely that poor Duggie was trying to escape a cat fight, and ended up being bitten or scratched during the attempted getaway. Ouch!!!

Without any pain medication, antibiotics or correct treatment Duggie would’ve tried to heal himself by licking at the area. Cats do this to “self soothe” and believing they are cleaning affected areas. Contrary to Old Wives Tales, cat saliva is not an antibacterial and just exacerbates things by introducing more harmful bacteria.

To prevent more serious trauma, the vet recommended sedating Duggie to clip away the hair, clean/flush the wound and cut away dead/dying tissue that would hinder healing. There is a practice called “debridement” where the wound is made to bleed (in a sterile manner) to encourage new tissue to form and speed up the healing process naturally.

It was at this point that his primary caregiver decided to become his Mummy (checks were made to ensure he did not belong to another family). All that charm of his had paid off, and although he didn’t yet know it, his life was about to improve tenfold!

The vet got to work, and within an hour of starting, the wound looked so much healthier and appropriate medications had been administered to keep Duggie pain free and able to fight off the infection.

He recovered beautifully, and in the comfort he deserves at his new forever home.

Duggie is now a much loved member of a family who saved him and turned his life around.

Well done little man!!!

Jessie has recently visited the March practice to be neutered and also have a microchip implanted, she was a very inquisitive kitty cat. 🐾

As of the 10th June it will be a legal requirement that all cats must be microchipped. Please call your local Nene Vet Practice to get booked in, if your cat has not yet been done.

Here is where it all began for Sara 🥰

I have always loved animals of all shapes and sizes and would seek anything out to make a home for including garden snails 🐌! My first pets were a budgie called Joey and a white rabbit I named Pinky ( he had pink eyes, it was perfectly logical to me) they were followed by many more including Guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, cats, chinchillas, parakeets, a pony, and I am currently mummy to a super little rescue dog who stole my heart.
I knew at a very young age that I couldn’t imagine my life without animals in it, I loved spending time with them, learning how to care for them and how to keep them healthy and happy. The logical step was to carve out a career in the veterinary profession which ticked all of the boxes for my dream job.
I was originally considering equine nursing due to having a passion for horses, but changed my mind after work experience in small animal practice as the work was far more varied, working with so many different species. I was very lucky to be offered a position with the group in 1998 and studied hard to gain my qualification as a registered veterinary nurse and haven’t looked back! I later became a clinical coach and have trained many student veterinary nurses over the years. In 2012 I won a national competition run by Royal Canin for my pet weight clinics, and am working towards an advanced diploma in canine behaviour management which I am aiming to complete in the coming months. You never ever stop learning or improving! My clinical passion is for dentistry and I have completed several courses in this area over several years.
I’ve now been working in the veterinary profession for 26 years, I hope to still be here until i retire!

This is where it all began for Dani 🐴🐶🐱

I have always been surrounded by animals, whether it be down my grandad's farm with the donkeys and horses, or getting my own cat when I was 9. I now have a dog called Saracen and he's always there with his waggy tail and wet dog kisses to greet me when I come home. Animals seem to bring a bit of joy to our lives.
