The emergency sit/down is incredibly useful as a backup or instead of your recall. I practice this regularly with phoenix, especially when he is mid chase during a game of fetch.
Pick your dogs strongest position, sit or down, and start by working on the speed at which your dog gets into the position before challenging the distance and finally the distraction.
If you want your dog to learn this skill, get in touch.

If you have more than one dog or are thinking of adding another dog to your family, dog walks can seem daunting. With each extra dog, it can become increasingly challenging, especially if you are dealing with a strong puller or reactivity issues. Here are some tips to consider when working towards joyful walks with multiple dogs:

1) Use the right equipment for your dogs: every dog is different, but in general you want to consider what equipment gives you the best control (especially when walking large dogs) and allows for the smoothest handling. For me, this rules out bulky bungee leads, retractable leads, and lead coupler/splitters.

2) Work with each dog individually: if your dog cannot walk well on its own, then the problem will only compound when you walk in a group. Make sure each dog is taught the same rules around lead walking.

3) Bring rewards: when putting multiple dogs together, reinforce all good walking to encourage the behaviour.

4) Start with short walks and consider the energy levels of each dog: if you have two dogs with very different energy levels, consider giving the higher energy dog a play in the garden first or a walk, before adding the slower dog. This avoids one dog being over exercised and the other from being under exercised and frustrated.

5) Choose appropriate walking locations: keeping in mind the excitement level of each dog, pick a walk that will best suit both dogs. This is especially important to begin with. Once you are more confident handling multiple dogs successfully, you can then broaden the type of environments to explore.

Reactivity training session with Cedric the Romanian rescue. I am very proud of this boy and his guardians. Cedric suffered from extreme reactivity to dogs... the scent of another dog was enough to send him into a lunging barking frenzy! We've worked on lead walking, and after a couple of sessions with Phoenix, Cedric has improved brilliantly. His guardians have taken his training head on, and their commitment is getting some serious results 💪 This clip is a breakdown of our last session with Phoenix. For Cedric, it was important to keep changing the picture as novelty situations caused the biggest reactions.

Beautiful Crumble, the working Golden Retriever 💙 I worked with Crumble and her guardians as a puppy, and we recently had a refresh now that she is well into her adolescence. Like many dogs her age, other dogs are incredibly exciting. In fact, the whole world is! Therefore, the basics, such as loose-lead walking and recall/engagement, can feel challenging to achieve. With a few adjustments in the motivation and guidance we used for Crumble, she achieved so much in one session! Very smart 🍪.

Always finding ways to work on confidence exercises. Jumping on a wobbly surface and working on static positions is not as easy as it looks! Adding these small exercises to break up your normal walk are great for bonding and mental stimulation. 🐕

Meet Crumb, the cockapoo 😍. Crumb has just started his first puppy class, and beforehand, I got to meet him and his new family for a puppy 121. Puppy 121s are great, especially for first-time puppy owners or adding a second dog. A session can help create a smooth setup and routine as well as help with understanding puppy development (what's normal and what to look out for) and, of course, early training and socialisation. It is well worth investing time and effort at the early stages. So many 'problem' behaviours can be avoided or minimised by understanding how to incorporate your particular breed into your specific lifestyle effectively.

Training is about creating clarity in your communication with your dog. Good obedience is simply your dog understanding what you're asking and working towards creating reliability in the motivation to perform a specific behaviour.

A good example is lead walking. Many dogs that I work with genuinely don't understand what is being asked of them, nor do they have the motivation to perform the task reliably. Some dogs need more guidance than others simply because they are more stimulated by the environment rather than walking calmly. My dog Phoenix is one of those, and he does best when told exactly what to do rather than leaving it up to him. In the video above, he shows he understands the difference between walking calmly on a loose lead and being allowed to explore and sniff. Some dogs are fine with doing both without issue, however many dogs I come across struggle on this 'grey scale' of being allowed to sniff as they choose but also expected to pay full attention and walk calmly. If your dog is very stimulated by its environment, then your dog may benefit from being given clear instructions on when to sniff and explore and when to walk calmly next to you.

My lovely clients sent me this beautiful, harmonious clip of their 3 Goldendoodles in complete peace. They have worked so hard from having chaos to calm, first with big boys Walter and Barney and then their third addition puppy Arthur. Much respect 👊 It is not easy having a mutlidog household where all dogs (including a puppy!) are under control and able to settle so well.
If you're struggling with calmness in home and adjusting to having more than one dog, get in touch.

Handsome Blue, the rescue dalmatian 💙 I've been lucky to work with this lovely lad and his guardians on some lead reactivity and separation anxiety. We made some great progress on the first steps of resolving lead reactivity, which is to focus on the skill of lead walking itself. More to come from this one :)

The very sweet Eira, a Bichon puppy. We've been working with 6 month old Eira on focus/engagement on her guardians, lead walking, and recall. Like many puppies, Eira finds other dogs extremely exciting, and that is when all her training is truly challenged. Adolescence is a tricky time for many dogs, and their interest in the environment can grow even stronger. It is during this time that we really need to show how great of an option it is to choose to pay attention to their guardians instead of distractions.

If you're struggling with getting your dog's attention when it really matters, get in touch 😀

It all starts with engagement. Finding what makes your dog go 'yeahhh!' Is the key to getting engagement and focus. My favourite motivator has to be tug.
Tug can promote impulse control, build confidence and strengthen the bond between dog and owner. Tug taps into a dog's natural drive, making it a motivational and highly reinforcing training tool. It's also a great method of exercise for both dog and human!
Keys to success with tug:
Let your dog win, lots!
Be the one to start and finish the game. Keep it short and sweet to build motivation and always stop the game when your dog is still wanting more.
Don't be a boring playmate - get as into the game as your dog!

This is gorgeous Honey, a cocker spaniel who had been getting into fights with her older sister (left). Having a multi-dog family unit can create complexities if left to their own devices. In general, the more dogs you have the more structure is required for harmony to thrive.
Being aware of how attention and affection is given, how food and sleeping places are allocated is vital to avoid any issues between dogs to crop up - don't allow an environment for competition over resources. And of course your dog's understanding who is setting the house rules all makes for an easier stress free environment.
