Tuesday Tip:
Remember, this horse showing and riding is supposed to be FUN! That's how most of us got started. Smile, enjoy your your horse and what you are learning. It's all a process. Some days you win and some days you learn! I have found that the more you have fun, the more success you make. Being overly critical of yourself or your horse generally works against you. Always find the good in everything first. Whether you are the rider, trainer, sponsor or parent be positive, be supportive. No one tries to do poorly! SO many riders beat themselves up and are critical of themselves. They don't need help at that! Focus on the positive and you will see much more positive results! Try it and see what happens!!!

Just a little heads up. May is now fully booked and June is filling fast.

Iv had a few people who have been unkind on their message because couldn’t fit them in immediately.

Please remember like lots of self employed people, i Can only be in one place at a time.
🙈

Please book in plenty of time.
I understand that situations arise that are more urgent and I’ll always do my best to accommodate. But unkind messages are not appreciated by anyone.

Thank you.

Rant over. Hope you are all enjoying the sunshine ☀️

Love your horse, not what they can do.

My horse had to retire this year.
It was unexpected and it changed everything.

But for him, nothing changed.

He still goes out in the field, still gets a nice big fluffy bed, cosy rugs and a carrot every night. He still gets remedial shoes, gets his teeth done and regularly sees a physio.

Nothing changed for him, because he’s not a machine and the level of care he gets is not dependant on what he can do. I loved riding him, but that was a privilege, not a right and certainly not a way for him to “earn” good care.

He’s not a car that can be scrapped or sold on because he can’t do what I want to do anymore.

When you take the reins of a horse, you make a commitment.

A commitment to ensure their happiness and welfare always come first; whether they are jumping big tracks, competing at Grand Prix level, hacking or grazing in a field. Level of competition or ability should not dictate the level of care.

Horses are fragile. They break. They get injured. Soemtimes they have to retire. It doesn’t mean they are any less worthy of your care, attention or money.

Stop giving away, “loaning” or selling your broken down horses because they can’t do what you want them to do and if that means you have to change your plans or put them on pause, then so be it.

Love your horse, not what they can do.

This is a fabulous video explaining the importance of tree point angles. I do my best to explain on-site but this explains it perfectly

12/11/2023

Here's an effect of saddles that are too narrow and incorrectly angled.

When I've come across this, the physical and emotional trauma I've felt in the horse has been sickening. The physical damage is done - you can't put back what's gone.

The emotional distress can be enormous and I sincerely believe it's emotional trauma that has built up over many months and/or years, as an unprotesting horse continues to do as asked, despite the problem being exacerbated whenever the rider's weight hits the saddle.

Perhaps they become numb to it over time, and it's only with deep and gentle work that the problem is revealed. I hope that enough of the distress is released for the horse to continue its ridden career with renewed heart.

I've usually been with a new owner when we've come across this, thankfully not that many times, and we've taken heart that the horse knows its needs (and pain) are seen and heard. Sometimes we can't change what's there and what's been done, but we can certainly help with the horse's response to it.

This isn't a new observation - there's a reason Balance Saddles call this region of the body the 'junction' - but it's always worth building awareness and *empathy.

(Please excuse the limitations of images - it can be hard to find what I need! I need one of those amazing South American veterinary artists to do one for me!)

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your kind messages and patience.

I’m hoping to be back to work next week but I might be a little slower than normal. 🙈

I’ll be contacting everyone who was affected over the last few weeks to reschedule appointments.

Thank you

Update

Pneumonia, a blood clot on my lung and a kidney infection at the same time are not fun at all.

I am now home but still feeling very unwell.

I will be sorting appointments next week on a day to day basis and contacting those who I missed last week as soon as I can.

I’m sorry for any inconvenience caused

Sarah
