Have you ever stopped yourself from advertising a class, programme or service out of fear that no one shows up?
I think most of us have at some point!
On this this week's episode of Training Dogs, Training People & Keeping Our Sh*t Together I'm offering some tips to help!
Listen wherever you get your podcasts :)
My dogs and I love learning tricks together. As long as you teach without punishment or pressure, and within your dog’s physical and emotional limits, it can be a great bonding activity. Tell me, what’s your dog’s fave trick or skill?
The idea that a dog *should* work for every single treat (or even regular food allowance) is outdated and can cause stress and conflict.
Sure, you can use food to reward when teaching something.
You can and should also just give them something nice for the fun of it, without expectation or pressure.
Imagine if you had to work for every nice thing in life..
I know I love a cheeky treat just for the heck of it!
Sometimes life is a lot.
As a dog parent, and as a human.
Today, take a breath, connect with your dog without worrying about training skills and relax together

Yep, I’m a dog behaviourist and I don’t think your dog’s behaviour matters (be that barking, pulling, peeing in the house, biting , growling, running away etc etc)
I’m also a clinical psychologist and I don’t think YOUR behaviour matters either (getting annoyed and telling your dog off, pulling too harshly on the lead, not meeting their needs, ignoring them etc etc )
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to minimise any of these things. We should be trying not to behave in this way for sure.
Behaviour is important but is doesn’t matter. What matters is the FEELING behind the behaviour.
Only when we identify how the dog, or how you are feeling, can we have any hope of making positive change to behaviour.
THIS RIGHT HERE is why so many people and dogs get stuck in training. The focus is on changing (or stopping) behaviour.
If instead we put the focus on trying to understand HOW a dog or a person is FEELING and supporting them with that, behavioural change will happen more naturally.

Have you ever been told ‘don’t let them practice the behaviour’?
The advice of not letting your dog practice an undesirable behaviour (e.g barking out of the window) is good in theory. This is because what we know about learning is that the more you practice something, the better you get at it.
What’s really important though, is the emotion or ‘feeling’ behind that behaviour.
If barking out of the window helps your dog to feel relief, (that they’ve successfully guarded your home from what they believe to be an intruder, for example), they will seek that feeling of relief again and again.
Simply stopping the barking does not stop the anxiety that dog is feeling when they see someone pass by the house .
So we want to think less about them ‘not practicing the behaviour’ (barking) and more about what we can do in the environment to reduce the anxiety they feel when someone passes by.
In other words we are providing emotional relief and safety for that dog before they ever need it.
Reach out to a force free professional for support on how to achieve this.

Dedicated one on one time with your dog doesn't always have to look like "structured training". Just hanging out and watching the world go by counts too!
