Molly and Briar are starting to form a strong friendship. Strong bonds are essential to all horses mental and physical well-being whether on a track or stabled.

Ensure your horse gets some time to socialise daily with others. A few ideas are turnout together, ride with another, allow grooming over the stable door, take partitions or walls down in stables.

Last Friday our herd said goodbye to Con 💙

Con was euthanised on a good day surrounded by his friends on the track. The herd stood with him as his mum and the vet helped him one final time. The herd being present helped this vet visit feel normal and just like all the others before and his body remained afterwards to give our horses time to understand that Con had passed.

Con has been a huge part of track life since arriving in June, he quickly buddied up with the boys and enjoyed spending his day grooming and foraging for gorse plants. Con was kept on his feet by Caramel, who took a keen love interest when it suited her but Con didn’t mind that as an easy life with the boys was his idea of a great day.
Con enjoyed walking and riding out with his mum, Becky, and playing horsemanship games in return for a scratch.
Here’s just a few photos of Con enjoying his time on the track with his herd.
Rest easy Con 💙

The new herd have been in training to eat breakfast bowls together. It might not seem a lot but for most horses who come from traditional set ups having others in close proximity especially over high reward resources can be a huge change so feeding time is built up slowly and any horses who take longer or may be pushed off a bowl like Briar get some extra space.

Are you winter ready?

With the clocks changing this weekend lots of horse owners will be thinking about their options for winter.
Does your yard offer winter turnout facilities or sand pens?
Can they accommodate your horses natural behavioural and psychological needs?
Does your horse have freedom to choose and spend time with other horses?

I constantly asked myself these questions when faced with traditional stable yards set up and I always came back to the same disappointing answer that it wasn’t good enough and my horse needed better!
I opted to let Diego live out with a friends horse to fulfil his equine needs rather than my own desires. This was the best decision I ever made! Yes it was hard! He was a motorway drive away and sometimes I couldn’t see him daily and sometimes the weather was adverse and I’d wonder if he was happy and if I’d made the right decision but every time I saw him I was reassured that I had!

Horses want a herd! So please think about giving your horse a herd and don’t just rely on other people to tell you what your horse needs or settle for the traditional yard set up if you feel it’s not serving your horse.
Let’s listen to what the horse wants!
