These two 🥰 Such fabulous running buddies, even if they do get distracted by the local wildlife occasionally! Albert is going to be 12 in September and has been running with me for 10 years on and off. He's still as fit as a flea and in his mind being my running buddy is his purpose in life. Puffin is still learning the ropes but is a natural canicross dog as he loves to pull!! 🏃🏼‍♀️🐾

⚠️ Did you know that adders are the only snake that live in the UK?

🥱 As the weather is (slowly...) warming up, they are beginning to come out of hibernation.

☀️ They can be seen basking in the sun on rocks, logs, in long grass, and in the common growth.

🐍 They do not mean any harm to anyone, but they will bite if stood on or messed with.

🚨 Adder bites can be fatal to dogs, especially if they are bitten on the muzzle.

⏰ Signs of an adder bite usually appear within 2 hours, and symptoms can include: local swelling, pain, bleeding, and lameness.

🐾 If a bite from an adder is suspected you should pick your dog up and carry them, as this helps to prevent the venom circulating their blood system as quickly.

‼️ If left untreated, dogs may collapse, have blood clotting problems, tremors or convulsions - adder bites can sometimes be fatal.

💧 If possible, use cold water at the site of the bite to help minimise swelling.

☎️ You must call your vet IMMEDIATELY.

💡 Please be aware that adders are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981; this means it is an offence to injure, kill, or harm them.

When a trainer asks you to speak to your vet or a veterinary behaviorist about whether your dog may be a candidate for anti-anxiety medications:

Our goal is not to sedate your dog.

Our goal is not to turn your dog into a zombie.

Our goal is not to remove your dog’s personality.

Instead, our goal is to give you more tools to help your dog cope with the world. Our goal is to give your dog a better chance at recovering from sometimes pretty severe behavior problems.

There is still a HUGE stigma around giving dogs behavior medications, but the truth is that much like some humans, some dogs are born with brains that literally cannot create the chemicals needed to cope with life’s stressors. And some dogs go through such trauma that their brains change to the point where they also cannot cope.

If you went to a medical professional and they diagnosed your dog with diabetes, would you refuse insulin because maybe a diet change might work? All the while knowing your dog was physically unwell?

If your dog broke their leg, and you brought them to the vet, and they prescribed painkillers while your dog healed, would you withhold those painkillers because you feel like your dog should be able to heal without them?

Honestly, the chronic stress that sometimes effects our dogs can seriously impact their quality of life, and this stigma of “anxiety meds bad” is doing a lot of harm.

And if you’ve tried meds before but didn’t like how your dog was when they were on them? Have a dialogue with your vet, or seek out the help of a boarded veterinary behaviorist! There are a multitude of options available out there, and like in humans, some meds work better for certain individuals than others! Don’t let one bad experience sour you on all anti-anxiety medications, that’s like throwing the baby out with the bath water!

The last thing I wanted to say:

If you try anxiety medications for your dog you have NOT failed them. You are not “giving up”. It doesn’t make you, or your dog, weak, or bad, or less than. In fact, you’re a rock star advocate for your dog, and I applaud you for doing right by them.

Some dogs can’t produce enough of their own serotonin; for those dogs, store bought is often best ❤️

Its sad to see an older dog trailing along on a walk.

Old dogs often experience a decline in their physical abilities and health, which can impact their ability to keep up on walks and necessitate extra special care. This change is a natural part of the aging process in dogs, just as it is in humans.

Here are several reasons why older dogs might struggle with walks and require more attention:

𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬: One of the most common issues in older dogs is arthritis, a condition that causes joint pain and stiffness. This can make it difficult and painful for them to walk, run, or even stand. Regular, gentle exercise can help, but care must be taken not to overexert an arthritic dog.

𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐬: As dogs age, they naturally lose some of their stamina and muscle mass. This decline can make it hard for them to keep up on longer walks. Older dogs may tire more quickly and need shorter, more frequent walks instead of long excursions.

𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞: Aging can also affect a dog's senses. Loss of hearing and vision can make walks more challenging and potentially frightening for an older dog. They may become more anxious or hesitant, especially in unfamiliar or busy environments.

𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬: Older dogs often have chronic health issues such as heart disease, kidney disease, or other conditions that can affect their energy levels and overall health. These conditions may require specific care routines and can limit the amount and intensity of exercise they can safely handle.

To care for an older dog, it's important to adapt to their changing needs.

Why Happy Tails?

The idea of Happy Tails was born during a camping holiday on The Gower Peninsula in Wales.

Sarah and Canny have been friends since 2011 and both share a love of animals. Their own dogs enjoyed the comforts of being home boarded during that holiday. They have personally experienced the challenges of leaving a dog and going away without them, and have also experienced the challenge of finding the right people to care for them, hence the idea of Happy Tails Home Boarding!

Canny has cared for dogs for over 30 years and has a particular passion for sighthounds. Previously having volunteered for 10 years with Forever Hounds Trust, formally Greyhound Rescue West of England, Canny has helped to rescue, rehabilitate and find forever homes for many greyhounds and lurchers across the South West. Currently Canny enjoys the company of Albert the Whippet her running companion and hot water bottle (!) and Minnie a retired ex racing greyhound from Ireland who now enjoying her twilight year can often be found stretched out and snoozing the length of the sofa!

Sarah has always loved dogs and rehomed Leo, a young lurcher, from a local dog rescue in January 2017. Sarah has worked within Sales, Management and Training and more recently has enjoy a role supporting small business.
