Pro Tips for a Well-Managed Pasture! 🌱🐴

•Remove droppings regularly (preferably daily) and avoid using horse manure as fertilizer.
•Avoid overstocking (recommended: 2 horses per hectare or 1-1.5 acres per horse).
•Graze horses of similar age together.
•Rotate grazing by subdividing paddocks.
•Include other livestock in the grazing area to dilute the horse worm burden.

Responsible Horse Worm Control Tips 🐴💪

•Use faecal worm egg counts (FWEC) during the grazing season to determine which horses need worming. Generally, treat horses with a worm egg count of over 200 eggs/g (consult your vet for personalised advice).
•To help target specific worms at appropriate times of year, other tests can guide which horses need deworming and when.
•After identifying those who need treating, treat all horses and ponies simultaneously with appropriate products.
•Administer the correct dose based on the horse's weight.
•Avoid blanket use of worming treatments to prevent the development of drug resistance.

It is also important to maintain a well-managed pasture, keep an eye out for more tips on this 🌱

When World Horse Welfare Field Officer Seema Ritson first found Seamus, she was shocked to see a "giant skeleton" slowly dying of starvation. Clydesdales are considered a vulnerable species by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and are generally very well cared for, but Seamus was found without a blade of grass to eat.

Once he arrived safely at World Horse Welfare’s Lancashire Rescue and Rehoming Centre, the experienced and dedicated team rallied to Seamus's aid and he received the emergency treatment he desperately needed. He has since been rehomed, and just look at him now!

Laminitis is a distressing condition that affects the hooves of horses. It involves the inflammation and damage of sensitive tissues within the hoof, leading to stretching, weakening, and potential displacement of the pedal bone.

1️⃣ A cone that comes to a point at about 90–120 cm in front of their face
2️⃣ Over the back and behind the tail when standing with the head facing straight forward

💡This is why a horse often lifts his head just before a jump because they actually briefly lose sight of the jump just before they take off.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬?

It can be a nightmare when your horse’s water troughs freeze over, particularly if it is over night and they don’t have access to any other water source! 🐴

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴:

❄️Put tennis balls in the trough
❄️Add a half-full water bottle with some salt in it (approx 1 part salt to 2 parts water)
❄️Use rubber buckets instead of plastic or metal
❄️Put the bucket inside a tyre and add bedding to the inside of the tyre to create insulation
❄️Put your trough/bucket in the ground to make use of ground warmth
