Were your dogs affected? Did you get some good pics of the lights?
Let us know….

Solar storms and how it may impact your dogs.

Scientific studies have repeatedly demonstrated that dogs are sensitive to geomagnetic changes.

Currently the earth is experiencing a powerful solar storm. It's effects on our dogs should not be underestimated. Especially our sensitive working dogs who are bred to have a heightened sense of direction. Dogs who are anxious or nervous may experience exacerbated symptoms. Dogs are sensitive to even small changes in the earth's magnetic field, this current storm is big and disruptive.

Epileptic dogs and people may be affected. There is a huge body of evidence relating to solar storms and seizures, have a little Google, there's too many relevant bits of literature to post here.

What can you do? Dogs are at increased risk of becoming disorientated in new environments, keep them on lead, in sight, have a heightened awareness of where they are. For dogs who rely on their sense of direction for work such as sheepdogs working hills, search and rescue dogs, tracking dogs, hunting dogs and trail dogs, it might be worth evaluating putting off any work where a dog may get lost. This is not me being a f***y either, I've already heard of a couple of normally savvy dogs becoming lost and disoriented in the north of Scotland, out of character for them.

In humans existing mental health conditions can worsen temporarily, particularly conditions caused by or associated with trauma, where your integral ability to orientate becomes distrupted and makes you feel unsafe, increasing anxiety and hypervigilance. This change in your presentation can also impact your dogs.

Just something to be aware of. As much as it sounds like hippy woo woo nonsense, I can assure you, it's a thing.

"the idea that animals can detect Earth’s magnetic field has traveled the path from ridicule to well-established fact in little more than one generation. Dozens of experiments have now shown that diverse animal species, ranging from bees to salamanders to sea turtles to birds, have internal compasses. Some species use their compasses to navigate entire oceans, others to find better mud just a few inches away."

SHEEP !! 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑

🐾 My dogs ignore sheep and they are pretty well trained with an excellent recall and focus off lead.

However last week I took the dogs out on a long walk.
A significant part of the walk involved walking down a lane past (not through) fields of sheep with new born lambs.

So I put them on lead. Why?
Because I respect the farmer 👨‍🌾and the 🐑 sheep. I don't want the sheep to feel worried about their lambs. My dogs have zero need to be off lead here so they are not.

If your dog is a risk to sheep, keep it away or on lead, it doesn't have to physically make contact with sheep to cause them harm.

It's stressful for a prey animal to have a predator in its environment.

🐑 If you see Sheep, put it on a lead
🐑 If you hear Sheep, put it on a lead
🐑 If you think there might be Sheep, put it on a lead

🚜The Country Code say keep dogs on a lead near livestock!

Of course it’s ALWAYS better to get booked in BEFORE your dogs coat becomes matted / knotted. This makes the whole grooming experience better for your dog.

No one likes tuggy hair!

🤩 If you've been wondering what it's like to work with us, you might like to hear what a few of our lovely clients have to say about that! 🤩

💬 I absolutely recommend these guys! We went for the classic 6-week puppy class, and have 2 1-on-1 sessions with Mandy, and it definitely made puppyhood easier.

💬 Amazing training from people who truly love and understand dogs! We have done 1:1 puppy classes, chaos to calm, hoopers and agility with our two dogs and the results have been amazing!

💬 Super helpful and experienced dog trainers - wouldn’t go anywhere else!

💬 Having her back home after her time with Mandy has been great. We can now enjoy calm walks with coco walking by our side. She is also now fully crate trained and sleeps silently in her crate every night.
Mandy also continues to provide support should we need it even now that coco is home. Can’t recommend active paws enough!

We pride ourselves on the level of service and customer satisfaction we've achieved at Active Paws and our reviews can attest to that! 🥰

We have just a couple spots available in May

👉 So why not snap one up and start your training journey?

Apologies in advance if communication is a little slow or I have to make last minute rearrangements to sessions.
Our old boy (16) isn’t having a great time at the moment, so we are concentrating on making sure he’s getting all the love, care and attention he deserves 💔

Never be this person.

Running a small business is hard work. There are no paid sick days. No paid holidays. There’s little job security. If it rains and you can’t run classes for a week, that’s a week’s groceries you can’t afford.

We don’t get paid for the hours of travel, we don’t get our fuel subsidized. We have to pay venue hire, even if nobody turns up. We go home after a long day at work and instead of switching off, it’s time to do admin, advertising and lesson prep for the next day into the early hours. It quite literally is non-stop.

If somebody who is running their own small business doesn’t answer an email, there’s probably a reason. Maybe they’re totally snowed under. Maybe they’re sick. Maybe they (god forbid) have taken a bit of time off to relax. Maybe they didn’t see it. Maybe it went into the junk box. Maybe they accidentally overlooked it. Maybe, and with my lack of object permanence I do this a lot, they fully formulated a response and forgot to press send.

A one star review, for a small business, is the difference between a 5 star reputation and a 4.8 star reputation. What justifies a one star review? If I took your money and never showed up. If I did a really shoddy job and made your dog worse. If I was rude or unprofessional. If I promised something and put no effort in to deliver. One star is the lowest review you can give. Receiving this review from somebody I’ve never met is appalling.

Because to them, it’s faceless. It’s ’this will show her for ignoring my email!’ For a small business owner, it might be the difference between getting more work or being overlooked. It’s reputation. Because if someone is willing to give the lowest possible review, surely that must be justified?

Realistically, I would never want to work with someone like this, who is willing to drag a business through the mud at the slightest inconvenience. I’ve saved myself the stress of likely working with someone rude and entitled, probably somebody unwilling to wait for results and instead wants a quick fix- something that just doesn’t work in my business. And if this person needed instant responses, it’s probably a good thing we didn’t work together anyway, because I can’t possibly deliver on that.

This was 11 months ago. It’s fine. But next time you’re considering leaving a one star review, just put yourself in their shoes. Have a bit of compassion. Do you really want to attack a business that, in this current climate, is probably just trying to stay afloat? Do you want to potentially destroy the reputation of someone you’ve never actually met? What good can come from leaving this review, because I promise all it will do is ensure I send any subsequent emails from them straight into the deleted folder.

Just try to be the kindest version of yourself. Something minor like this, which they probably forgot they did a few days later, can leave a lasting impact on others.

We have limited availability in the next month for in-person private lessons

This is for you if you want:

🐾 A well-behaved dog in public
🐾 To be able to walk your dog calmly
🐾 A dog that comes every time you call them🐾 A dog with better impulse control
🐾 A better connection with your dog

Here's how in-person private lessons helped Julie and her dog Jasper:
Jasper struggled with lead walking and recall. We have been working with Jasper on his lead walking and creating a great recall. Jasper is now focused and attentive to Julie when walking on or off a lead!
And we can help you and your dog achieve the same.

If you're ready to take the leap today, then text us here to book your space: 07825877172

But be quick, we have very limited space left for April and May.

See you all on Monday 15th 🐾
