This guard breed is controlling resources, access in this case. Worth noting this show of dominance isnt fear based, threat based or intimidating. The dog doesn't need to angry or over threshold and looks to be enjoying its role. Its easy to think that dominance equals aggression, but in reality, to them its used a simple language.

Another win for the Wynne! Here’s an excerpt from his most recent attempt to explain dominance to the masses.

‘In some cases, these organizations insist that the idea of dominance in human-dog relations is an extrapolation from outdated views of wolf social organization.
These learned societies are on the side of the angels, but there’s just one problem: Research shows that dogs do in fact experience dominance. They are highly sensitive to hierarchical social relationships — more so even than wolves. Still, that doesn’t mean that the harsh animal trainers are right: Dogs may respond to dominance cues without that in any way offering an excuse for cruel, physically punishing behavior.’ Clive Wynne

Going beyond the fur

I’ve always had a huge interest in dogs, but 10 years ago a dog came into my life that forced me to take that interest further. The pup had unfortunately been attacked by his mother early in his life which meant separation from his brothers and sisters, so his social skills with other dogs were lacking and he had a big risk of over attachment to people. Not a good situation for a pup destined to become a large and powerful German Shepherd.

I started volunteering at various rescues to learn from others gain a broader insight into dog behaviour, and eventually made the decision to become qualified around 4 years ago. Its been hard work! Countless hours watching and learning dog behaviour, understanding the real meanings of the countless scientific studies and most of all working with problem dogs themselves lead me to pass the level 4 Advanced Canine Behaviour Diploma at Distinction level. (Get me!) The learning will go on..... dogs are perhaps the best teachers.

I love my job, I love the problem solving and getting the best for the dog and owner. Please feel free to get in touch!
