We have seen unprecedented demand for our services over the past few months which has been wonderful but as a very small team we have made the difficult decision to stop accepting new client registrations. This is so that we can look after our wonderful clients and patients and continue to provide a high standard of care.

We will continually monitor the situation and announce if our books open again in the future.

Thanks to all of our clients for their continued support ❤

Great advice from Cat The Vet as we going into this weekend. Normal advice is to walk early morning/late at night but with temperatures unlikely to drop off adequately we are recommending not walking pets.

With the weather like it is, there are plenty of warnings going around about heat stroke in dogs and how to avoid it and all owners will do everything they can to protect their pets.

But you have to go out sometime and even with the best will in the world mistakes can happen.

So, what are the EARLY signs your dog might be starting to struggle? Knowing these means you can stop, change your plans and potentially save their lives.

Because with heat stroke, prevention is definitely better than cure!

🥵🐶 They stop.

Some dogs when they start to get a bit hot will just stop and refuse to walk on for a couple of minutes. Don’t ignore them and pull on the lead or stride on ahead so they run to catch up. Listen to what they are saying and wait until they are ready to move on. And if they do it again, maybe consider heading for home.

🥵🐶 They lie down.

Especially if they chose to do this in the shade. Your dog isn’t stupid, they know what to do if they start to feel warm, just like we do! Let them rest and when they get back on their feet, have a think about whether to continue or to cut the walk short.

🥵🐶 They don’t bring the ball back.

I am sure no-one is throwing a ball in this weather but many dogs adore chasing one, so we indulge them when it isn’t quite so hot but temperatures can be deceiving! If, instead of returning to you, your dog takes the ball to some shade and lies down, don’t head over and chuck it again, let them take a break. If you throw it, they WILL chase it but that doesn’t mean that is actually what they want to do in that moment.

🥵🐶 They start to pant excessively.

Not just the normal panting they do, excessive panting is when they are open mouthed, tongue lolling and they only stop for a second to swallow and then they are back to rapid fire pants. This is the start of them over-heating.

If you see this you MUST stop immediately, get them into the shade and give them water if you have some.

Heat stroke can develop rapidly and fatally, even on overcast or humid days and generally the signs are there that your dog is starting to struggle before we see more serious things like staggering and collapse.

The key is to be careful, allow your dog to take things at their own pace, don’t encourage excessive exercise and listen to, and act on, what they are telling you!

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend everyone! 🌞

Everyday pet healthcare at home

Hello! I’m Dr Katie Burke, head vet and chief Sat-Nav operator at Peak Community Vet.

As a fellow local and pet owner, I understand that fitting veterinary appointments into your busy life (not to mention fitting your reluctant pets into their carrying boxes) can be stressful. Peak Community Vet is a new, small animal mobile veterinary practice, bringing everyday healthcare services to your home.

Covering the Chesterfield/ Mansfield/ Worksop area, we offer convenient and compassionate care six days a week, with evening appointments also available.
