What would be in your horse owning winter survival kit?

For me thereā€™s 3 key items for getting through the winter with horses!

1. Warm layers! Thick coats, thermals, thick socks, fleeces, woolly hats and gloves. I think anyone who knows me will know I seriously feel the cold. Iā€™m 4xā€™s the size of summer me during the winter due to all my layers!

2. Waterproofs. Good waterpoofs are a must have. Being cold is bad enough, but being wet too? No thank you. The best investment to your wardrobe is good quality waterpoofs.

3. Coffee. Warm yourself up from the inside and give yourself that well needed energy boost. A hot coffee is a must have for if all else fails ā˜•ļø

What would you add to your winter survival kit?

Jacket
Wellies
Bridle

If youā€™re bringing your horse into work for the 2024 season, hereā€™s what you should know.

POLE WORK IS YOUR BEST FRIEND šŸ’ŖšŸ¼

Why is pole work so beneficial to our horses?

Pole work, and particularly raised poles, will encourage the horse to engage the muscles of the horseā€™s body that flex the neck, back and hip, helping the horse to strengthen their core, neck, back and hips.

Pole work can enhance the way of going by using exercises to develop the horses:
āļø Balance
āļø Rhythm
āļø Straightness
āļø Engagement
As well as making flatwork more exciting, pole work develops your horseā€™s core ability. It also improves their top line and their suppleness by encouraging them to step under with the hindleg more.

Pole work lets you influence your horseā€™s stride length. Its great exercise if your horse tends to rush, as the poles make their rhythm and stride length more regular.

Pictured here Iā€™m riding schooling livery Jet over trot poles. In this instance we set the poles wider to encourage more stretch and opening of his frame. On the flipside, if youā€™re trying to develop more collection, you can shorten the distance between the poles so your horse has to collect their stride.

Iā€™m not sure who needs to hear this, but never feel shame asking for help!

We all need it sometimes. My job is to help YOU and your horse achieve your goals. If thatā€™s as me as your rider or working through an issue so you can be the rider, or just looking after your horse(s) so you can live your life. My job is to help you! Thereā€™s no shame on asking.

In order for me to do this job I love to pieces, I require an amazing team to help me. I have help making sure Iā€™m riding to the best of my ability, help keeping young horses from getting overwhelmed, help doing the stables so I can focus on riding, help travelling horses to events, help picking up feed & bedding, help meeting farriers & vets, help caring for the horses so I can have time off.

I have an amazing small team who help me achieve my goals and yours! I honestly could not do everything on my own, and Iā€™m so thankful to each person who helps me on my journey.

From videoing for content, talking me through my riding, loading my horse and the rest! To Izzy who helps me back horses, compete horses, covers the yard for me, keeps me sane on a hard day and cycles for miles to keep me company out hacking. To the men whoā€™ll do my stables and feeds so I can focus on the horses, especially my Dad who runs around all day everyday behind the scenes helping his little girl live out her childhood dreams.

Even when it looks easy, even when we love it, it doesnā€™t make it possible to do everything for yourself. Always remember thereā€™s no shame asking for help. We all need our own team ā¤ļø

New horsey on the team..

So recently I introduced 4yr old Dokita who Iā€™m working with onto my business page, now meet another newbie! Same yard, different owner.

This is Lady. She was again backed by Fred Timmis a few years ago and has since enjoyed hours of hacking and funrides. Ladyā€™s owner has asked me to work with Lady as she struggles in the school.

The main issue her owner has found is that Lady doesnā€™t accept working into the bridle and jogs sideways. My first aim was to improve her walk, encouraging her to do a slower and longer stride, brining her hind quarters underneath her and flexing slightly around mt inside leg. From here Lady naturally worked into my hand. We then did the same in the trot.

Iā€™m only asking for small moments for the time being and ideally Iā€™d like her to bring her nose ā€˜forwardā€™ but for a starting point Iā€™m very pleased. She started to use her body correctly which will make the rest easier for her.

Iā€™m excited to share our journey together and to work with her owner on board too!

21 years of riding horses..

Still the same great big smile on my face when Iā€™m with them! Still the same horse loving, pony mad, child at heart šŸ„°

21 years of these animals, 12 years working with them, 4.5 years having my own business. It makes me feel proud that I still love these animals unconditionally and that they never fail to make me really smile! Also that both these photos (taken almost 20 years apart..) are taken in the same village šŸ„°

Bonus points to anyone (local) who recognises the other baby face in the first pic šŸ‘¶šŸ¼

FAQ - I hope this can help you out!

I may not offer ā€˜sales liveryā€™ but that doesnā€™t mean I canā€™t help you out. Last year approximately 1/3 of the horses I worked with for schooling were either advertised at the time, or with the intention of being so afterwards. 100% of those horses sold. Whether it was whilst with me, or after their time working with me, I was happy to help the owners where I could.

For many this mostly consisted of riding for videos and viewings. For some it consisted of helping draw up the adverts and provide references. For all, I would willing ride the horse, share the sales and provide honest feedback.

So please donā€™t be put off that I donā€™t do a hard ā€˜sales liveryā€™. My schooling livery packages, and even my freelance riding, can provide the service and help youā€™re looking for.

If youā€™re interested you can message me on:

I really didnā€™t know how to do this post for the challenge..

So I decided to use my own niche spin on it. All 5 accounts Iā€™ve chosen are either doing the challenge this year or did last year and thatā€™s how I discovered them.

So here are 5 accounts I enjoy following for various reasons and hope you will tooā˜ŗļø

Kind words and reviews really do mean the world to ANY small business.

Iā€™ve never really been someone to share publicly any messages I received from clients.

So here is one that really does make me smile.

This is in regards to a freelance schooling regular ā€˜Otisā€™. I started working with Otis in October 2023 and this is a review from November 2023! I certainly do not believe in quick fixes, progress over perfection any day and everyday. BUT, when I client is noticing positive changes almost straight away I canā€™t be help but feel proud!

Be safe, be seen!

Weā€™ve all heard it before right? We know hi viz enhances your chances of being seen.

Unfortunately that doesnā€™t always mean drivers will pass you sensibly. Unfortunately last month I experienced this first hand when I drive hit myself and the horse I was riding. *note - not the horse pictured*

Before I continue both myself and the horse are okay. The horse was seen by a physio a few days later but thankfully both of us have had a very lucky escape.

Both myself and the horse were in hi visibility. I was wearing the exact gilet Iā€™m wearing in this picture, the horse was in a hi vis pink exercise sheet. And yet we were still driven into.

Although it reduces the risk of a collision sadly it can still happen. But because we were wearing hi visibility it significantly helped support out case with the insurance companies.

Thankfully we also had a 3rd party witness me telling the driver multiple times to stop (which they failed to do so), and cctv footage of myself and the horse riding out in the area. But one of the very first questions I was asked when I made that awful call to was if we were wearing hi visibility.

So you may not look ā€˜coolā€™, but it may be the thing to save yourself and your horses lives. It may also help prevent you having to pay out to impatient members of the public in vehicles, because believe it or not, proving your horse innocent is not as easy as youā€™d think. Even when they come first in the Highway Code.

Look after yourself, look after your horse. BE SAFE, BE SEEN!

Thereā€™s so many places you can by ā€˜niceā€™ hi vis.

Here Iā€™m wearing which can be bought from
have a fantastic range with lights too!co.uk do niche options in a variety of colours too!

Christmas 2023, one thatā€™s not going to be forgotten for a long time with me!

How did you spend your Christmas period? šŸŽ„

I had a busy Christmas with work, 32 horses in total Christmas Day covering 204 miles!

But the whole Christmas period was busy. Between yard covers, riding, and dressing Fanta up in tinsel I still had to make time to see loved ones and family.

But I managed; loosed jumped Fanta over 1.10, family dinners, date nights, night out with friends, and even welcomed someone very special into the world ā¤ļø All in 7 days inbetween jobs!

So please help me out and say hi in the comments. Let me know who you are, and what youā€™re looking forward to for 2024! Maybe we can help each other out!
