Not only does massage assist in relieving tension within the muscles, it has effects on the circulatory system too; increasing lymphatic drainage (removal of toxins that build up following injury/exercise) and improving venous blood circulation (meaning blood can be reoxygenated faster)💪🏼
Here’s a great visual of the jugular vein following a manual therapy session with me, working effectively to carry blood back to the lungs, along with a lovely released neck and relaxed, happy horse😌

I simply LOVE scatter poles, I had to make another post about them👀
This time, Griff is making his groundwork debut on the account! Would you believe this the first time I asked him to complete this exercise in this way?🧐
Having known this boy for many years, he’s perhaps renown for being a little clumsy with those feet and not always thinking about where they are, which is why I set up this exercise for him to get that brain in gear🧠
We started off just walking through the exercise, and as expected he tripped over nearly every pole! But after just a few repetitions, adjusting his tempo and speed, we managed to build up to what you see in the video! And I don’t know about you, but I think that looks like some pretty good spatial awareness and proprioception😁
If you’d like some targeted exercises and advice to help your horse, how about booking in an appointment with me? Following every treatment I prescribe a tailored series of stretching and groundwork exercises, so you can really start progressing with rehabilitation, strengthening, or conditioning🙌🏼

Stimulating those paraspinals via low frequency H-Wave to help reduce pain✨
By using the 2Hz H-Wave to stimulate the muscle, I am able to increase venous return and lymphatic drainage, therefore accelerating the removal of pain-producing chemicals and toxins that build up in injured, sore or overused muscles. As the H-Wave mimics the body’s normal nerve signal (the Hoffman reflex), it is able to provide relief comfortably, with little to no appreciable muscle fatigue, when compared to other muscle stimulation devices. This also means it can penetrate the muscle far deeper, and provide more effective, longer lasting relief💪🏼
If you’d be interested in trying H-Wave for your own horse, get in touch today to see what I can offer! Message me directly on Facebook or Instagram, or WhatsApp me on 07440 503554💬
Exciting delivery yesterday with the arrival of my new Epiony Heat Pad Plus🤩
The Epiony Heat Pad uses the principles of thermotherapy (or heat therapy) to help provide non-invasive, drug free pain relief. This is achieved by causing vasodilation (dilation of the blood vessels), therefore increasing blood flow, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and flushing out carbon dioxide and metabolic waste faster📈
Additionally, heat therapy is great for encouraging stress relief and relaxation of the muscles, and decreases stiffness of joints, providing a greater overall feeling of comfort🙌🏼
I’m really excited to be taking this on the road with me as of next week! It will undoubtedly make my treatments all the more effective and efficient, meaning your horse will get more out of their session😁

The difference from the start of the session to the end of the session💪🏼
I love this exercise as it tests their thinking a little bit more than other polework layouts! You can see the difference in our approach to the exercise from the first go to the last go; each time I simply guided Gilly into the exercise on a loose lead, but he took himself through it in a slightly different way. Basically, he figured out what didn’t work the first time, and changed it to work the next time!😁
And it’s so easy to set up, as it’s literally just a set of poles placed randomly! You can make it as simple or challenging as you would like, just place the poles in whatever configuration you want, and it really makes them get their thinking caps on💭
And not only does it make them think, but it’s a great test of their proprioception (eye-hoof coordination), increases range of motion, engages their core and hind quarters, improves balance and is just a fun exercise to mix up a normal groundwork session😁
Release of the hamstrings muscles💪🏼
Before and after treatment of the hamstrings, completed all by hand🤚🏼
By using a series of massage techniques, acupressure, trigger point release, and stretching, we managed to transition the muscle from a painful, tight one, to a softer, more functional one💪🏼
Nothing quite as rewarding as seeing and feeling such huge changes from the start of the session through to the end!🤍
April bookings are now open, so if you’d like an appointment don’t hesitate to get in touch! Please text me on 07440 503554 or message me directly on Facebook or Instagram to book in💬
Why do horse lick, chew and yawn during massage?🧐
As a physiotherapist, not only am I feeling changes in the muscle as I work, but I’m also looking for signs of release; such as yawning, licking and chewing (I have a post with even more examples over on my Instagram!). But how are these behaviours linked to releasing tension?
It comes from the interaction of the two different autonomic nervous systems!
As they are prey animals, horse’s tend to keep themselves in a state of “fight or flight”, particularly when they are in pain, which uses the sympathetic nervous system. This is a survival tactic from years of evolution and is deeply ingrained in the horse!
In contrast, the parasympathetic nervous system is used when horses are in their “rest and digest” stage, when they are most at ease and relaxed. Most importantly, this system is in charge of healing.
Therefore, when we massage, we are looking for a shift from the sympathetic nervous system into the parasympathetic system, as this is an indication that we have bypassed the horse’s natural blocking response and they are processing and releasing the tension/pain they are holding.
And you guessed it; licking, chewing, yawning etc are all parasympathetic behaviours, which is why it is such a joy when the horse displays these following treatment!😁
Here’s the beautiful Sunshine demonstrating a big release during a session focussing on his back; this went on for almost a minute!⛅️

One of my regular clients, Bertie, enjoying his H Wave treatment this week; look at that head bop! Definitely not a conventional release but I think it’s safe to say he was relaxed🤣
I’ve been seeing Bertie for a couple of months now after he had a slight drop in performance! After some vet investigations, he began sessions with me which targeted some sore spots in his lumbar back and pelvic region! Along with a change in saddle, we’ve seen huge improvements and he’s back to his normal self!😁
We are now gradually reducing his sessions, focussing on maintaining his normal, to keep him in tip top condition whilst he gets back out competing⭐️

How do I use H Wave in my treatments?🤔
How do I use H Wave in my treatments?🤔
When I’m treating with H Wave, I tend to focus on two main modes of action; high frequency and low frequency.
Low frequency treatment performs at 2Hz, which means it stimulates 2 contractions per second. This mode is used therapeutically to promote blood flow and encourage lymphatic drainage from a site of injury, therefore increasing the rate of recovery and reducing oedema. There’s also pain relieving qualities in this mode, by removing toxins and pain-producing chemicals that accumulate in muscles, whether it’s from injury or simply overuse!
This mode produces a more visible muscle contraction which, due to the properties of the H Wave signal, are none fatiguing and more readily accepted by the muscle (=more effective treatment and faster recovery)!
High frequency treatment performs at 60Hz, which produces 60 contractions per second, creating more of a fasciculation than the 2Hz mode. At this frequency, the H Wave provides deep analgesia, achieved by shutting down the transmission of pain signals and stimulating the release of endorphins (the body’s natural pain relieving chemical). It may not look like as much is happening with this mode compared to 2Hz, but it’s certainly working its magic deep in the muscle!
The Trimwave unit I use allows me to set frequencies right from 1Hz all the way up to 200Hz, so whilst I usually focus on the two frequencies above, I have the ability to adjust it for the individual! All treatment with this device is horse specific; whether it’s the frequency, intensity, or time the therapy is applied, and can often give me a helping hand (no pun intended!) after I’ve completed massage, to work even deeper into the muscle and give that added bit of relief!😁
