๐ŸŒŸPlaces available!๐ŸŒŸ

Hi everyone,

Some of you may be aware that I run a social dog walk/basic training session on a Thursday afternoon, 1.45-2.45pm. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿถ

๐ŸพThe dogs that come along may be young and excitable and need space to realise not all dogs want to interact or they lack confidence because of a negative experience with other dogs.๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿค“Read on for more details......

๐ŸŒŸThe aim of the group is:

๐Ÿ‘ To allow dogs that need space around other dogs a safe place to walk, train & investigate their surroundings.

๐Ÿ‘To give you a chance to relax knowing you are in a safe space and under guidance to help you understand what your dog is communicating.

๐Ÿ‘For you to build confidence and practice your handling skills around other dogs.

๐Ÿ‘Have a safe space with other likeminded owners that won't judge you or your dogs behaviour.

๐Ÿ‘Have an environment that you and you dog can engage in 'normal' training exercises without pressure of being close to other dogs.

โš ๏ธThings to note:

๐Ÿ‘‰All dogs are on lead at all times.

๐Ÿ‘‰All dogs that come along have had 121 help from me or have attended CCEG21 group classes (www.cceg21.co.uk) and are assessed as suitable for the group.

๐Ÿ‘‰None of the dogs have dog to dog or dog to human aggression issues, this group is to build confidence and build good social skills to reduce over excitement.

๐Ÿ‘‰The session is made up of 20mins group walk at a distance, 20mins basic training, ending with 20mins group walk or 'free work' (investigation of objects to walk over, under, scent, stand on etc...)

๐Ÿ‘‰There is no time limit on how many sessions you come along for it really is up to you.

๐Ÿ‘‰Maximum of 6 dogs per session.

๐ŸŒŸI have spaces available starting from next Thursday (2nd May) if you are interested in coming along ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ‘‰ยฃ10/ session.
๐Ÿ‘‰You must book in.
๐Ÿ‘‰ a 121 assessment (normal 121 training fee applies) may be necessary first if it has been over 6months since we've had a training session.

To discuss further if this might be suitable for you:

06/03/2024

After my post about reactivity yesterday, we had a day of reintroduction with these 2! ๐Ÿ˜„

They've known each other since they were both around a year old and with inital slow & positive introduction with many parallel walks they were good buddies ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿฆฎ

Since the pandemic hit though they've not walked together for 4 years! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ However yesterday was an unavoidable situation where we looked after her for the day ๐Ÿ˜Š.

I had confidence in the fact they had known each other for 2 years prior to the break in regular meet ups but still managed their reintroduction carefully.

Once the signals from both were good, I relaxed the boundaries a little more as the day went on but always kept watch with both about any potential red flag situations (small spaces, one being too 'familiar" with the other, food or toys on offer, favourite humans nearby etc...)

I approached the day like this:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Neutral place to walk.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Quick sniff through the travel crate before getting out of the car.
๐Ÿ‘‰Muzzle on Rupert as precaution.
๐Ÿ‘‰Both dogs on short lead to a secure field.
๐Ÿ‘‰Once there continued on short lead but with freedom of choice where to walk until they showed positive signs of interaction/ignoring.
๐Ÿ‘‰Gentle praise with food back up when good choices made with interactions.
๐Ÿ‘‰Let the long lead trail/off lead once I was happy they were both happy.
๐Ÿ‘‰Continued watching and gentle praise once home.
๐Ÿ‘‰Used environmental management of gate/lead/muzzle if off lead at home.
๐Ÿ‘‰Continued gentle praise when good interaction.
๐Ÿ‘‰Separation when needed at the earliest point if threshold of excitement/tension was felt.

All in all it was a good day and all the dogs were fine pottering around together before eventually settling down๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿพ
If I had 'just let them get on with it' or 'sort it out between them' it could have been a different story possibly ending in a scrap! I much prefer to build up positive interactions and end up with a good outcome for the next time. It also helps to rebuild Ruperts 'Dog positive' bank account ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿพ

For those that see me out & about with my little dog, he has a high level of reactivity after several attacks and this graphic shows my daily life with him.

He & I don't always get it right. This snapshot of info looks simple and it is in theory! but in reality it is soo hard.

So if you see me, please give us space and no judgement. Unless you've had a reactive dog with the emotional baggage that mine has it can be difficult to understand.

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿพ๐Ÿงก

Changing a dogs emotions takes time, but there are lots of steps (easy steps) you can do to help things go smoother and faster.
If you have a reactive dog, I know just how much effort you are putting in.โœ…
It can be a frustrating process, a stressful process and a slow process sometimes too...but when you first see those improvements it is a great feeling.
A feeling of "wow, I CAN actually do this"...and you can !!!
When your dog starts to understand too....that is another reason to celebrate.

There are tough day ahead too though, and that is absolutely OK.
Nothing is perfect.
Something that isn't talked about much with reactive dogs is how our own emotional state can either help or hinder a dogs progress.
Our clients are encouraged to breathe and relax when doing this work and it helps enormously.
After 3 deep slow breaths their dogs own stress level has reduced.
Dogs sense our emotions.
They can sense how stressed we are....and walking a reactive dog can be stressful.

Breathe....Relax and trust that you CAN do this.โœ…

Your dog (or cat or other pet you share your home with) is not 'just a pet'๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿพ

Pet loss is difficult however you look at it. Our pets are not 'just a pet', they can be very much a part of us and saying goodbye can be the hardest thing to do ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’”

12yrs ago today I said goodbye to my, '1in a million' dog, black Labrador, Bodger, or 'Mr Bodge' as he was affectionately known. ๐Ÿพ

With me through relationship break ups, house moves, job changes then 2 pregnancies and getting married, he was always by my side and THE BEST dog with our young family.

Many a story to tell from secretly begging for toast from my landlady (and amazing friend!) and being 'unzipped' twice for eating lego & squeaky toys, peeing on my foot in dog training classes ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ(he didn't want to work for a living ๐Ÿ˜…) and getting a ride home in a breakdown truck. Putting up with with being 'given' wooden spoons by my 2yr old son ('e 'r Bodgy') and being used as a big black cushion, not to mention eating whole dead rabbits on country walks ๐Ÿคข๐Ÿคฎ, he really was a character & loved by all that met him ๐Ÿฅฐ.

Now it feels like I'm beginning this journey again with my older dog Freddie and although plenty of life left in him yet, we're now looking at care of our aging dog and starting to 'normalise' the fact he won't be around forever ๐Ÿ˜•

The Blue Cross have some fantastic resources to help if you are finding you are struggling to process any stage of pet loss, even leading up to the inevitable or if your dog has gone missing, your feelings are valid ๐Ÿพ

Don't be afraid to seek help if you need it, your dog is not, 'just a pet'.

"Thank you Vickie for your help and advice with Dexter, my rescue beagle. We took your advice when he met his stepbrothers for the first time and they all accepted each other straight away. Thanks also for your patience in answering my many questions."
February 2024.

"Hello Vickie, Thank you very much for your summary of the time spent with Duke and me. All the extra information is very helpful and although Duke is my fourth dog the others came as puppies and I have to remember that Duke is having to be retrained. I am very thankful for all the information you have given me and the reasoning behind your thoughts makes so much sense. Thank you Vickie, for your words of wisdom I refer to your notes often, they are a great help."
November 2023

"Having a 10 month old cockerpoo who was very lively and a handful. I was recommended to Vickie. We had one to one training at home. The advice, training and helpful tips were very useful. We can't thank Vickie enough and would thoroughly recommend her. Molly is now a changed dog thankfully."

1.....2...3...Separate.
If you watch dogs you will see this can be a normal pattern of behaviour that many dogs display when they naturally encounter others and we can mimic this.
You may have even experienced meetings which suddenly turned about 5 seconds after they met, one dog suddenly got snappy. They may have hung around too long and social cues may have been ignored.
The 3 second "rule" is a good way to help dogs that struggle with reading other dogs.
However, this is NOT for dogs that are hyper excited and are "digging" in to meet others....this likely won't help.
๐Ÿ”ตIf you have a puppy/dog that is calmer and perhaps unsure, this can help.
๐Ÿ”ตChoose your dogs wisely for this and watch the body language of BOTH dogs.
๐Ÿ”ตJust because 3 seconds is mentioned....if you see an issue before 3 seconds, advocate and remove your dog.
๐Ÿ”ตYou can do this on a lead BUT remove the tension on the lead, Tension creates tension.
๐Ÿ”ตYou can repeat this if signals are good after the first meeting. Some dogs will need 4 - 5 micro meetings over a few minutes to be comfortable.
๐Ÿ”ตDon't even attempt if either dog is giving a very clear "No"
๐Ÿ”ตDogs do NOT need to meet every other dog they encounter and encouraging that can be dangerous as you know nothing about the other dog....be choosy with this.
โœ…If your dog doesn't want to engage with any dog, that is just fine. Every dogs sociability is fluid and many do not enjoy the company of other dogs, and even when they do, they can be very choosy.
If you haven't tried this give this a go.... with a well thought out calmer dog to help your puppy or dog that may be struggling.

Only a couple of days before the canine enrichment workshop (๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿพ) and part of the information given will relate to breed specific behaviours and how you can utilise these when providing mental stimulation (enrichment). ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ

Being scent hounds, my 2 love to use their noses and on our morning outing we used this log pile to channel their instinctive behaviour of sniffing out good stuff (in this case tasty treats!๐Ÿ˜‹).

Given a little impulse control guidance by me too, we turned the 'use your nose' game into something that connects me with them on their walk in short bursts rather than them finding their own entertainment for an hour until it's time to go home.

Strengthening your bond in fun training and games when out exercising is a great way to stay connected in the great outdoors ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿงก

BEGIN AT THE BEGINNING
โ€˜Weโ€™ve tried everythingโ€ฆ nothing worksโ€™โ€ฆ by Emma Judson
Boy if Iโ€™d had a quid for every time someone said this to meโ€ฆ Iโ€™d be writing this from a luxury yacht somewhere sunny where the sea sparkles an impossible blueโ€ฆ where was I againโ€ฆ

Ah yes. No you havenโ€™t.

When people tell me theyโ€™ve tried everything, the truth of the matter is in fact that they have tried many things, but:

7/ Inconsistently
6/ Incorrect technique
5/ Not for anywhere near long enough
4/ With wildly inaccurate expectations
3/ Without understanding what drives the behaviour
2/ Without understanding why this method works

And.. drum roll pleaseโ€ฆ

1/ Theyโ€™re NEVER starting at the beginning. They are always starting in the middle or even in some cases, near the end.

To quote Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland:

โ€œBegin at the beginning," the King said, very gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop.โ€

I realise this sounds bleedinโ€™ obvious, but this really is the case and it is why so many attempts at training and behaviour modification fail. Because even if you get your technique right, if you are consistent, if you understand what is driving the behaviour you donโ€™t like, and why your method worksโ€ฆ if you start in the middle it just wonโ€™t work!

The reason this happens is that people donโ€™t realise where the beginning actually is.
Letโ€™s use a dog pulls on the lead on a walk as an example; then they believe that โ€˜on a walkโ€™ is the beginning of the problem, start there.

(For walk, read โ€˜achieve a set distance, loop, or route, of between 30 minutes to an hourโ€™). Immediately this will fail. They try it several times, each time it fails, โ€˜ugh, that method doesnโ€™t workโ€™.
But โ€˜on a walkโ€™ isnโ€™t the start of the process at all, a walk is pretty near the end!
Lets look at what a walk entails for your dog, a successful, happy, fun walk that is beneficial to you both.
Your dog must;
Be responsive to you
Walk on a loose lead
Be able to ignore distractions
Be confident with traffic, people, other animals around
Be free from pain or discomfort
Be familiar with the lead, collar and harness and not associate them with pain/discomfort
Capable of perceiving reward (taking a treat and enjoying it or playing with a toy and enjoying that)
Most dogs who are a pain in the backside to walk, are so because they are having an issue with one or more of those requirements.
On top of this many have now habitually associated walks with a set of behaviours that make them, not-fun. Some dogs will start actively looking for things to react to the moment you set out, some will be anticipating pain the moment the kit goes on, some will have switched off their ears the second you open the front door, determined to drag you round the route as fast as possible.

The beginning in this example, is at home, in an environment where the dog can listen to you, is responsive, can accept a treat or a game with a toy and genuinely find that reinforcing, so that you can teach them where they ought to walk in relation to you.

If there is a chance that the dog is in pain, then the beginning is at the vets for a pain medication trial or a referral to a physio to see what the problem is, and resolving that pain or fear of pain, and then the next step is in the house, teaching the dog to walk beside you.

Once you have a dog who can listen to you, can walk beside you, then you can venture past the front door and work on that engagement out front. Only when your dog can listen and respond to you, should you move away from the front door, because if they canโ€™t listen thereโ€ฆ why on earth would they be any better half a mile away?

Walking nicely on the lead through a variety of environments, remaining attentive to the human actually requires quite a lot of training, and lots of positive association between owner and dog. This is Doggy University Masters Degree level stuff, not Puppy Playschool!

The same approach can be applied to all manner of training and behaviour issues โ€“ identify where the beginning actually is.

If your dog is worried about visitors ringing the bell and entering the house, then the beginning is
NOT greeting visitors at the front door!
The beginning is probably allowing the dog (on a lead) to see an already seated visitor who is not looking at them or speaking to them, on the far side of the living room, whilst mum feeds a few treats. The dog can be in another room with someone whilst the visitor enters, the visitor is let in without them ringing the bell, and moves to leave after the dog has been removed from the room. Or perhaps it is getting a new doorbell and pairing that with treats in the dogs bed until the bell becomes a cue โ€˜get in your bedโ€™โ€ฆ at the same time, avoiding anyone ringing the bell and having the dog in another room whenever the door is answered. For some dogs both these techniques can be deployed, to change the meaning of the bell cue AND counter condition to โ€˜stranger in the houseโ€™.

If your dog hates the car โ€“ the beginning is not the fast lane of the M6. If your dog is scared of the groomers, then an hour of pampering at Fluff n Wuff is not where you start.

It isnโ€™t just that we struggle to identify where the beginning is, although that can be difficult in some cases. It is also that, honestly, it can be very boring, it isnโ€™t what we want to be doing. It requires more effort and thought and takes more time.

Sometimes we feel we are not in a position to start at the beginning โ€“ as an example, I canโ€™t put my lurcher in the car. He is over aroused by the environment where the car has to be at the front of the house (not an issue for his walks, we exit via the back and avoid that area) so I cannot begin with him working calmly around the outside of the car. My starting point would beโ€ฆ build a driveway or move house!

However sometimes that feeling isnโ€™t really accurate โ€“ if youโ€™re training a dog for a client and they believe you should be doing this outside the house, it is your job to tell them thatโ€™s not where you begin.

If you are a dog walker offering training, ditto โ€“ you must begin at the beginning or you cannot offer that service. It is then their choice to hire you to do it properly or, not hire you.

Sometimes we have just built up mental blocks about why we canโ€™t start at the beginning or weโ€™ve got stuck on having to begin somewhere in the middle, and I wish I knew the answer to that, all I can suggest is be honest with yourself and open to alternatives. Perhaps ask a friend to double check your thinking and help you plan!

This of course leads me on to why quick fix aversive solutions to simply โ€˜stopโ€™ behaviours we donโ€™t want are so very seductive and of course, very easy to make sexy, attractive social media video content, but that is a subject for another blog!

A final thoughtโ€ฆ your dogs training and behaviour can be thought of as a building. Are you putting up a rock solid building with secure foundationsโ€ฆ or is it a wibbly wobbly shaky house of cards, thrown up on sand, in an earthquake zone?
