It’s hard to get seen on here when your business involves poo…

Let’s face it—this isn’t as scroll-stopping as a the muscles on that farrier or a new pair of Fairfax & Favor boots.

But it’s more important.

I’m Clare—a horse-loving human running a small equine business called EFECS, where we test your horse’s poo to help protect their health.

Yep, not glamorous.

But essential.

Because if we keep worming blindly, we’ll lose the wormers that work.

And when that happens? Every horse is at risk—including yours.

If you’ve ever cared about doing the right thing for your horse… this is it.

So if this post (or any of my posts) makes you stop, smile, or think….

Help me!

❤️ Give it a little love.

Whether that just a like, a double tap or leaving and emoji or YES in the comments.
Tagging someone or sharing it!

BECAUSE….

It helps this message reach more horse owners who need to hear it.

Thank you

Let’s protect our horses from the inside out. 🐴💚

🐴 Did you know 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗲𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 runs from April 1 – May 1
A time to celebrate the animals who make our lives better (even if they don’t curl up on the sofa although I have 3 that do!).

For us horse folk, pets aren’t just dogs and cats.
Our four-legged, hay-munching companions count too.

𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗺, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 💛
And just like any pet, they rely on us to keep them well.

That’s where we come in 👇
At 𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗦, we take the guesswork out of worming with faecal egg count kits that tell you what’s really going on inside.

So this , show your horse some love:
✔️ Book a test
✔️ Groom for a little longer
✔️ Snap a photo and share their story

Tag us—we’d love to see your healthy, happy horses.

This horse was competing.
Bouncy. Bright. Full of life.
And then…colic. Out of nowhere.
Her owner was left confused, stressed, and searching for answers.
The redworm re-test was already booked.
But we also suggested something most owners skip: a tapeworm saliva test.
Why?
Because tapeworm is one of the most overlooked threats in the field.
No outward signs.
No weight loss.
No dull coat.
Nothing to tell you something’s going on…
Until suddenly, it is.
💡 In this case, the tapeworm test came back HIGH.
Even though this horse had been regularly treated with praziquantel every 6 months — just like the textbook had said at the time!
But here’s the truth no one tells you:
👉 A wormer only works if it works.
👉 You don’t know unless you test.
👉 And resistance is very real.
Once the test confirmed the burden, we recommended treatment.
And the difference? Immediate.
The words from the owner:
“I didn’t think she could feel any more alive… but I was wrong.”
This isn’t just about ticking boxes.
It’s about knowing what’s going on inside your horse — even when everything looks fine on the outside.
And sometimes?
That knowledge can change everything.
🧪 Tapeworm is the silent one. But we’re not silent about it.
➡️ If it’s been 6+ months since you last tested or treated for tapeworm, now’s the time.
Saliva kits available now – posted fast, results sent direct, with clear advice.
🎯 Peace of mind isn’t a bonus.
It’s the baseline.
Message us if you’re unsure what to do next.

The EFECS subscription plan isn’t for every horse owner.

It’s for the one who values expert advice, proper support—and knows how important their horse’s health is 🐴

We get it—horses are expensive. Vets, farriers, feed, rugs, tack... the list never ends. So adding another cost might feel like a stretch.

But you’re not just any owner.

You’re the kind who’d rather invest in proper testing for redworm, tapeworm, and roundworm than wing it and hope for the best.

When it’s a choice between a new saddle pad or a worm count subscription…
You might buy both 😏
But the subscription definitely comes first.

And honestly? That’s the kind of horse owner we LOVE being on the team for.
If that sounds like you—and you’re not on our best-selling plan yet—you can join right here:

There’s something magical about those first steps, but there’s also a lot to think about when it comes to foal care—especially parasite control.

👉 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀, regular worm egg counts every three months and tapeworm tests every six months are a must.
👉 𝗙𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗼 — their immune systems take time to mature, so worming from 4 weeks old helps protect them from harmful parasites.

I’ve put together a blog post with everything you need to know to keep both mares and foals healthy and parasite-free. (if you want the link just ask)

PSA: UK horse owners ⏰ The clocks go forward this weekend!

Yep, we lose an hour of sleep (ugh)... but it means lighter evenings are finally here and I am SO ready for that extra horse time after work 🐴☀️

It always reminds me of the riding school days when someone would rock up an hour late because they forgot. Every single year 🤦‍♀️

So here’s your heads-up — don’t be that person!

And a photo of my Lovely Piggie who celebrated her 10th birthday last week.

The Science Behind Faecal Egg Counts Explained (Simply)

A Faecal Egg Count (FEC) is an essential test for checking the worm burden in your horse. Here's how it works:

1️⃣ First, a fresh sample of your horse’s manure is collected. Multiple samples are often taken to get a more accurate result.

2️⃣ The sample is then sent to the lab where it’s mixed with a special solution and placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins at high speeds to separate the heavier particles from the lighter worm eggs.

3️⃣ After centrifuging, the lab examines the sample under a microscope to count the number of worm eggs. The more eggs found, the higher the worm burden.

Your results will tell you if your horse has a low, medium, or high worm burden, helping you decide what to do next for your horse’s health.

March is the perfect time to start testing for worms, and it’s important to note—your worm count will NOT be zero!

Your results will show low, medium, or high levels, which means your horse does have some worm burden. But don’t panic—that’s completely normal!

What really matters is whether your horse needs treatment or not, and that's where testing gives you clarity. Just because there are worms doesn’t mean your horse needs worming right away. It's all about understanding the numbers and knowing when to act.

Got questions? Drop them below, or reach out, and I’ll be happy to help you make the right call for your horse’s health!

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙄 𝘿𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙋𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙨
When someone asked me why I bother paying for regular worm counts instead of just worming my horse every few months, I smiled and said, “𝙊𝙝, 𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙥𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙨.”

Cue confused looks and my daughter nearly choking on her tack room pot noodle…
I continued:

I pay for 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱, knowing I’m not over-worming or wasting money on unnecessary treatments.

I pay for 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲, because guessing isn’t a great strategy when it comes to internal parasites.

I pay for 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀, because wormers won’t work forever if we misuse them.

I pay for 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱, instead of just following an outdated routine.

I pay for 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗜’𝗺 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲, whether to my yard owner, loan horse’s owner, or my own peace of mind.

I pay for 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗲𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲, because prevention is cheaper than treatment.

I pay for 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲’𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵, not just hoping for the best.

At the end of the day, 𝙄’𝙢 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙥𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙨—I’m paying for the knowledge, confidence, and care that comes with them.
And honestly?

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗻𝘆.

How often should you test for worms?

Every horse is different, and things like age, lifestyle, and location all play a role in how often they need testing. So, when should you be testing?

Age matters:
Young horses under 4 are more at risk and need testing more often. Adult horses should follow a set testing schedule, while senior horses may need extra monitoring.

Lifestyle:
Horses on busy livery yards are at higher risk. Horses in small private paddocks have a lower risk but still need routine tests. If new horses are coming in, test before turnout to prevent contamination.

Seasonal testing:
Start testing in spring as worm activity increases. Continue through summer and autumn based on results. In winter, horses should be treated for encysted redworm and bots – this is the only time we worm without testing. Tapeworm treatment should only be given when advised.

Location matters:
Wetter areas mean parasites survive longer on pasture, while drier areas may have lower risk. High-traffic yards will need more regular testing.

The best approach is always test, don’t guess! Regular testing stops unnecessary worming and keeps your horse healthier in the long run.

Spring is here, and it’s time to start testing all your horse's for worms!

Here’s why👇

Over the winter, small redworm larvae encyst in the gut wall and emerge as the weather warms up!

Did you know?

➡️ Small redworm has a short lifecycle—just a few weeks! That means regular testing is key from now until autumn.

➡️ Understanding the worm lifecycle shows how crucial regular poo-picking and pasture care are for your horse's health.

➡️ Small redworm larvae can travel up to 3 meters!

➡️ Roundworm larvae can survive on pasture for 8-10 years!

Ensure every horse is tested so you’re not missing any hidden risks.

With EFECS, you don’t have to worry about remembering all of this—we’ve got you covered, and you can reach out to Clare anytime for support.

A big part of my mission is to help horse owners understand the importance of worming and what actions they need to take.

I’ve had the pleasure of speaking at Beechwood Equestrian Centre, Equine Supplies Essex, and various riding clubs. I’ve also been featured on a few podcasts and in publications like Your Horse and other equine magazines.

If you’re hosting a riding club night, event, or anything where you need a speaker, I’d love to help.

But don’t forget, I share a lot of valuable info right here on social media! So make sure to follow, like, and share this post to help me spread the word and tag any horse owners who could use a little extra support.

Eventing season is here, I love it! Over the years I've done my fair share of events, but also as a fence judge at local horse trials, I’ve seen riders of all levels take on the challenge.

If you’re heading out this season, here are three things I always notice that make a difference…

FITNESS MATTERS – Both you and your horse need to be competition-fit. I’ve seen too many struggle simply because they weren’t ready. Prioritise fitness, feed, and rest—it will pay off. Make sure to add strength-building exercises into your routine.

WALK THE COURSE PROPERLY – Rushing your course walk? Bad idea. Take the time to study dips, terrain, and your lines into fences. Small details = big results. When walking, visualise your approach to each fence and how to handle tricky turns or lines.

PAY ATTENTION! – I’ve seen riders glued to their phones during the course walk… and then struggle on course. Multitasking is a lie! If you need your phone, use it to take notes or record tricky lines to visualise later. The more focused you are, the better you’ll perform.

What’s your top tip for eventing success? Share it below and let’s help each other out!
