Winter is just around the corner (and it definitely feels like it has arrived today!) and it’s going to get colder and darker before spring arrives! That means walking your dog is a little bit more of a chore than it is in the summer months, but we’ve got your back with some useful tips:

● Grit and salt could irritate their paws so if there’s a prolonged cold snap consider rinsing their feet after walks. This also removes the risk of the dog licking it off and ingesting it.

● Keep an eye on them if any lakes, ponds or canals freeze over as the dog could walk onto it and fall through the ice.

● A button light on their tag or a light-up collar is a good idea if your dog walking takes place before sunrise or after sunset.

● Small breeds and those with thin coats and low body fat (we’re looking at you whippets and greyhounds in particular!) will need a warm and waterproof jacket in inclement weather.

But of course, if your dog finds Bonfire Night stressful it’s very unlikely you’ll forget it’s on its way! Here are our five top tips for surviving Bonfire Night with your four-legged friend:

1. Plan ahead - check that both your home and garden are secure before Bonfire Night arrives in case your dog panics and tries to escape. Find out when big local displays are on so you know when the noises will be at their peak and consider asking neighbours if they are planning to set any fireworks off.

2. You can try to de-sensitise your dog, especially if you have a puppy, to the noises of fireworks by using a recording and playing it quietly to start off with and gradually increasing the volume. This may not work if your dog gets very stressed and panicked by fireworks, so use your judgement.

3. Create a safe place for your dog to go if it wants to - some dogs like to hide in the bathroom (even in the shower or bath) so consider lining them with blankets or making a nest in there. Close the curtains and put the television or some music on.

4. Comfort them if they show signs of fear (these might include shaking, trembling, panting, hiding, barking, having accidents in the house) - the idea that you reinforce their fear by comforting them isn't the case. Your presence, some kind words and a cuddle could make a huge difference.

5. Don’t take your dog to see fireworks in the hope that it will help them understand. The noise and lights will exacerbate any fear they already have. They may even panic so much they slip their collar or lead and run off or hurt themselves trying to get away.

Sheba's Sheprador puppies are six weeks old this week and mischief is their middle name! They are like mini bears! Our niece and nephew visited them yesterday and they were just brilliant!

Our previous litter of Shepradors have gone on to all sorts of adventures! Four of them have become invaluable assistance dogs to children who have physical or mental disabilities and we adore hearing of their progress... 💖

We couldn't let pass without a pic of Moogie - our not so little puppy!

Moogie is still very much enjoying life as a puppy (as you can see by his paws) but we have mastered sit and heel work as well as walking on a lead. We will step his training up over summer. It's sooooo important to let puppies be puppies and not push their training too hard!
