Uh oh... out in public again with my out of control reactive dogs 🐕

After the drama of the past few days I thought best to get out and adventure with my pack. We had a great walk doing training and ignoring other dogs.

Here's my reminder to my fellow reactive dog owners, you don't have to hide! Be proud of your dog! Advocate for them! Be part of the movement for speaking out for our dogs needs!

There is no shame in having a reactive dog! Say a big "F" you to the people who judge. There's a massive community of people with reactive dogs and I'm here for it!

If you wanna join our community you're welcome too-

Looking back at how far my knowledge has come... although this industry is hard and people are judgemental I need to remember why I do my job.

I've helped so many dogs and owners who struggle to be understood. I've helped rehome dogs, I've helped dogs learn how to cope in day to day life, I've helped the dogs who people have said cannot be helped, I've been involved in cases of behavioural euthanasia.

My understanding of dog behaviour is comprehensive. I've worked with some of the most complex cases some behaviourists would love to see. From shadow chasing (sterotypy behaviours) to dogs who have bitten people (including me), I've spoken in police cases (just today I've spoken to a police officer to advocate for a dogs case).

I live with 4 complex collies x kelpies who get to live their lives as normal dogs off the lead. All because I kept trying, I worked through management, I did behavioural modification, I did whatever it took to help my dogs feel safe.

I'm in no doubt the best at what I do, but I bloody love what I do. I do it to help the dogs that no one else will touch because they're "too complex". I'm the person who comes in to stop euthanasia happening.

So before people are like "how would you put a dog in that situation" I'm always a bit astonished that people question my methods when I'm a little quirky sure... but I help dogs, force free, dogs who other trainers won't touch.

So I'm going to keep doing what I do best, helping the dogs that no one else will.

We stick by our motto "where every dog has the chance to be understood". 🐾

Lovely seeing Kelpie Stan again today to see how he feels in a wider and busier environment.

We're working on finding his best reinforcer to give him the ability to focus and disenage. As it is with any hard wired herder we need to sometimes wait for arousal to go down to get any concentration. Waiting is the long game with our herders. Short bursts of poistive training help build tolerance with frustation and concentration!

I don't sit on Facebook to not be seen as outspoken. Whether people like me for my opinions or not is their problem.

I'm here for the owners of reactive dogs to be able to relate and speak openly about having a life with a reactive dog.

Apparently now I'm shunned by other behaviourists and trainers for setting my dog up for failure by taking her to a pub when my dog is reactive.

The point is... no other trainer or behaviourists were there. No one knows how I tried to set my dog up for success by sitting further away from the entrance, tucked away in the corner, having a full bag of sausages to do LAT training with.

My dog cosmo used to be reactive in pubs. Now he isn't, because we tried and tried again. Until we met success!

Living a life in avoidance with a reactive dog is not what I'm about.

My experiences as a dog owner help me relate to my clients on a different level to the average trainer. Because we live in a world with judgement, embarrassment and misunderstanding. To get it from the world of dog trainers and behaviourists is just disgraceful.

Why shouldn't we be honest about our own experiences? Why can't we support each other for what we do and our dogs?

If anyone knows me and my dogs. How far I go out of my way to help my dogs live a life of a normal dog.

I won't sit and hide my opinions and experiences for the benefits of other people's egos.

1 month ago we made the biggest move of our life 300 miles away to live my dream in cornwall.

I'm still pretty shocked and waiting to wake up from my dream.

To all my new clients thank you for making the transition so easy and welcoming me with massive open arms!

I look forward to a lifetime of helping dogs on the beach ⛱️ 🐾

Pip and Cassidy are new friends 🧡

After a struggled start with both barking at each other they soon we're able to be good friends.

It's sometimes difficult introducing 2 very different dogs, however with similar issues. We tackled through it and had lots of fun in the beach! 🐾

ABOUT US...

Hi my name is Elsa, I created Mental Mutts Pet Services in March 2018. A caring, responsible, trusted and reliable dog walking and pet service. I cover Hitchin and surrounding areas. I started Mental Mutts with the aim to let dogs be dogs, to have fun whilst socializing and well being a little on the loopy-side! I pride myself in the one- to -one dog and walker connection. Making walks engaging, helping with training and letting dogs have fun- as dogs should do! Mental Mutts began with just 1-1 walks, group walks and then began pet sitting for all animals too... We now cater for all breeds, furs and scales! I’ve has always had a deep-love and respect for animals, whilst growing up had a multitude of pets from fish to horses. From 2015 I spent time volunteering for local animal charities and doggy day care. I began building experience and pet sitting/walking local dogs for neighbours etc when I began to dabble with the idea of what Mental Mutts is today. I have continued to expand my knowledge by completing a First AID/CPR course for dogs (able to administer medication). I’m also a IMDT trained, dog trainer and currently studying to be a behaviourist. I aim to tailor our services to your best-friends needs, we love your pets just as much as I love my dog Coco (who comes to work with us!) And my cats Cookie and Britney. I truly understand what it's like to leave a pet with someone else (nerve wrecking!). However I offer a service which is loving, fun and responsible to assure you that your best-friend is always in the best hands! Mental Mutts is fully insured by Pet plan and DBS checked. Dog First Aid trained/CPR. Reliable and caring service with 5+ years experience. Available weekdays and weekends for all your pet needs.
