Turn Mealtime Into Your Dog’s Favourite Game! 🎉🐶

Did you know your dog’s daily food allowance can be the secret to fun AND focus? Instead of just dumping kibble in a bowl, use their meals as a way to play, learn, and bond every single day.

Here’s why working for food makes life more exciting for your dog:

🎯 Mental workout + snack = happy dog brain!
Solving little challenges for food taps into your dog’s natural instincts. It’s like a puzzle and a treat rolled into one.

🤹‍♂️ Keeps them entertained — no boredom here!
Dogs get restless with nothing to do. When mealtime means a fun game or a trick, you give them a purpose and boost their mood.

💥 Builds focus without force
Because the reward is right there, your dog stays tuned in, looking for cues, and eager to participate.

🧠 Every meal is training disguised as fun
Simple things like “sit for your dinner,” “touch my hand,” or “find it” games turn the day into a joyful learning adventure.

✨ Stronger bond + happy vibes
Your dog learns that you are the source of fun and good stuff — making your connection stronger, with less stress and more smiles.

Feeding time doesn’t have to be boring. Make it a highlight of the day that your dog looks forward to!

Ready to get started? Try asking for a “sit” or a “look” before giving the first bite and watch how quickly they light up. 🐾

☀️ Just 5 Spaces Left for July Consultations! ☀️
(August is nearly all blocked off for holidays!)

Summer in Cornwall is beautiful — but for reactive dogs, it can be overwhelming. Crowded beaches, bustling campsites, busy coastal paths… it’s a sensory overload that can lead to barking, lunging, and stress — for both you and your dog.

If walks are feeling more stressful than relaxing, now is the time to take action.

I have availability during the week starting July 28th – August 1st. These are the final consultation slots before I’m away in August.

Let's use the quieter window before the peak holiday chaos to give you the tools and confidence to support your dog through the season.

Book your initial package today and set your summer up for success 🌿🐾

From Regret to Transformation — How Cosmo Made Me Part Of the Trainer I Am Today 🐾

When I first brought Cosmo home, he wasn’t just a puppy. He was a gift to myself after a painful breakup—a way to heal, to move forward, and to feel whole again.

But here’s the truth no one talks about: I placed impossible expectations on him.

He was meant to be my distraction. My emotional support. My fixer. I imagined long peaceful walks, cozy cuddles, and the kind of connection that would heal all my wounds.

Instead, I got a dog who was reactive, fearful, overwhelmed, and over threshold more often than not. He didn’t want to be touched. He barked. He lunged. He shut down. He wasn’t what I wanted—and at first, I felt completely broken by it.

I thought I’d made a mistake. I even considered rehoming him.

Because I believed I wasn’t good enough. That his behavior was my fault. That maybe someone else could give him what I couldn’t.

But the universe had other plans.

Cosmo didn’t just stay—he changed me.

Together, we worked through intense dog reactivity, fear-based behaviours and even ongoing health struggles like severe allergies. Every setback forced me to learn more. To dig deeper. I became a certified canine nutritionist. I learned the science behind pain in dogs and how it changes behavior. I dove deep into the psychology of fear, frustration, and reactivity.

And slowly… Cosmo transformed.

He’s now the calm, grounded, sweet dog I always dreamed of. But more than that—he’s the reason I’m the trainer I am today.

He taught me patience. He taught me empathy. He taught me to see behaviour through the lens of pain, confusion, and unmet needs rather than “bad” or “naughty.”

I get my clients because I’ve been them. I’ve cried in the car after walks that went horribly. I’ve doubted myself. I’ve felt hopeless. And I’ve also felt the absolute joy of breakthrough moments and the peace of seeing your dog finally feel safe.

Owning Cosmo wasn’t a mistake. He was exactly what I needed.

If you’re struggling with your dog, you don’t have to go through it alone.

I offer private, personalized support rooted in lived experience, science-based methods, and a whole lot of heart. Whether you’re dealing with reactivity, fear, anxiety, or just feeling overwhelmed—I see you. I was you.

Let’s work together to give your dog (and yourself) the transformation you both deserve. 💛

You’re not failing your dog—you’re just at the beginning of something powerful.

🌟 Meet Moby – A Brilliant Border Collie on a Big Journey! 🌟

Today I had the pleasure of working with the gorgeous Moby – a lovely Border Collie who came to me for some extra support with a few tricky behaviours. Like many sensitive and intelligent dogs, Moby has been finding certain things in the world a bit overwhelming – particularly children, fast-moving objects like scooters and skateboards, and handling at the vet.

We focused on helping Moby feel more comfortable and confident, and one of the key tools we used was something called a Dopamine Box – and oh, was it a hit! 💥

🧠 So, what is a Dopamine Box and why is it so important?

A Dopamine Box is a carefully curated selection of activities and items that tap into your dog’s natural seeking and problem-solving instincts. Think snuffle mats, puzzle toys, boxes filled with paper and hidden treats, or even safe shreddables. These activities trigger the seeking system in the brain and release dopamine – the feel-good chemical linked to motivation, curiosity, and learning.

For reactive or anxious dogs, like Moby, this kind of enrichment is more than just “fun.” It actually helps rewire the emotional responses to things that cause stress. By giving them healthy ways to explore, think, and succeed, we help build emotional resilience – and reduce the likelihood of overreacting to stressors.

🎯 With Moby, we’re using the Dopamine Box alongside careful behaviour work to:

✅ Help him process and cope with triggers (like kids and fast movement)
✅ Make vet visits more manageable with cooperative care foundations
✅ Boost his confidence and optimism in challenging environments

It’s not just about avoiding the “bad stuff” – it’s about filling life with more of the good stuff so dogs like Moby can feel safe, supported, and successful.

So proud of this clever collie today – we’re just getting started, but his willingness to engage and try says everything. 🖤🐾

ABOUT US...

Hi my name is Elsa, I created Mental Mutts Pet Services in March 2018. A caring, responsible, trusted and reliable dog walking and pet service. I cover Hitchin and surrounding areas. I started Mental Mutts with the aim to let dogs be dogs, to have fun whilst socializing and well being a little on the loopy-side! I pride myself in the one- to -one dog and walker connection. Making walks engaging, helping with training and letting dogs have fun- as dogs should do! Mental Mutts began with just 1-1 walks, group walks and then began pet sitting for all animals too... We now cater for all breeds, furs and scales! I’ve has always had a deep-love and respect for animals, whilst growing up had a multitude of pets from fish to horses. From 2015 I spent time volunteering for local animal charities and doggy day care. I began building experience and pet sitting/walking local dogs for neighbours etc when I began to dabble with the idea of what Mental Mutts is today. I have continued to expand my knowledge by completing a First AID/CPR course for dogs (able to administer medication). I’m also a IMDT trained, dog trainer and currently studying to be a behaviourist. I aim to tailor our services to your best-friends needs, we love your pets just as much as I love my dog Coco (who comes to work with us!) And my cats Cookie and Britney. I truly understand what it's like to leave a pet with someone else (nerve wrecking!). However I offer a service which is loving, fun and responsible to assure you that your best-friend is always in the best hands! Mental Mutts is fully insured by Pet plan and DBS checked. Dog First Aid trained/CPR. Reliable and caring service with 5+ years experience. Available weekdays and weekends for all your pet needs.
