🐑 SHEEP ATTACKS 🐑

Just this week alone we have had to deal with 3 separate sheep attack incidents involving dogs.
The attacks have happened in different areas, and have affected numerous sheep each time. Unfortunately, all cases have resulted in death or euthanasia.

This time of year, ewes are heavily pregnant and will be lambing imminently.

Please keep your dog under close control and on a lead especially when near or around livestock. Even if your dog isn't aggressive towards sheep, if they are running and causing the ewes stress, this can lead to them aborting their lambs.

This is a very distressing situation to the farmers, us and most importantly the sheep. Let's all work together to minimise these incidents.

PRLB invite you to join us at Bondon Farm, Warwickshire, for an update on the first year of the Breed for CH4nge project as well as the wide range of data being collected by the group, including methane measurements, parasite resistance, lamb growth, assessment of the microbiome and rumen volume and feed efficiency. We aim to produce efficient and sustainable sheep for the long term without selecting for any single trait at the expense of other valuable traits.

At the meeting we will hear from speakers from PRLB, Signet, AHDB and Innovis. Refreshments will be provided.

Successful visit to sale at Ross yesterday. Needed some older ewes to balance up the age groups and really pleased to have secured a pen of 3yr olds from Southam flock dispersal sale.

Also looking for two new stock rams this season and super excited to purchase one of Lionel’s yearling tups, Southam Mastermind. This ram is sired by the Northern Irish Kennedy Andrew Kennedy tup (01618/2103304), which sired the majority of the Southam females at the sale.

Feel blessed to be able to reintroduce the Southam bloodlines back into the flock, since some of the foundation ewes for the Bearwood flock were Southam ewes purchased at Ross in 1998.

I think the middle lamb knows that the time has come to be moved to the paddock today, and is getting as much milk as it can 😁. I find the best way to wean orphan lambs is to take them off milk abruptly at 6 weeks of age, however, they have been getting used to water, grass and creep for the past fortnight, to minimise the stress of moving to a new diet.

Lambing over for another year with a Blue Texel having a lovely ewe lamb. This year 70% of the Blue Texel lamb crop were ewe lambs, which makes me very happy 😊

Lambing underway. Using vasectomised rams has shortened our lambing period. 90% of ewes lamb within 15 days.

3 weeks prior to lambing. Ewes have benefited from being inside for the past month as they were beginning to loose condition on saturated ground. Having scanned at 180%, ad-lib haylage and controlled use of Lifeline blocks have brought them into good condition.
