I think the middle lamb knows that the time has come to be moved to the paddock today, and is getting as much milk as it can 😁. I find the best way to wean orphan lambs is to take them off milk abruptly at 6 weeks of age, however, they have been getting used to water, grass and creep for the past fortnight, to minimise the stress of moving to a new diet.

Lambing over for another year with a Blue Texel having a lovely ewe lamb. This year 70% of the Blue Texel lamb crop were ewe lambs, which makes me very happy 😊

Lambing underway. Using vasectomised rams has shortened our lambing period. 90% of ewes lamb within 15 days.

3 weeks prior to lambing. Ewes have benefited from being inside for the past month as they were beginning to loose condition on saturated ground. Having scanned at 180%, ad-lib haylage and controlled use of Lifeline blocks have brought them into good condition.

A great initiative by the local community. Apple trees have been planted close to styles on the public footpaths passing through Bearwood. In years to come, walkers can have a refreshing 🍎 during their walk 😊.

Was surprised to see Bhuna still on the farm😀 Born premature and weighing around 2kgs; mother then died and she was subsequently adopted onto a Lleyn ewe. There were a couple of times during the first week that I didn’t think she would make it, however she’s a real fighter 😊

Bhuna is here to stay 😁

It’s a rush to see who can get out of the gate first, me or sheep, on the ‘look-out’ for fresh grass 😁Hasn’t been as dry here for a long time, however, ewes looking good on their restricted diet 😊

Decided to turn lambs on to fields shut up for hay, as grass dying off, and with the forward forecast remaining dry and hot, was concerned that any feed value would be lost there too. The first time for years that winter fodder will need to be bought-in.

Applying Crovect and sorting yearling ewes before the heat arrives at the weekend. Grass burning off quick.

Pasture reared, with minimal intervention, Lleyn and Blue Texel yearling ewes available. All sheep sold off the farm in their ‘working clothes’.

The sheep are Maedi Visna accredited, performance recorded and registered with their respective breed societies & . Pure bred, using genetics to breed a ewe that will thrive off grass.

Grass reared Maedi Visna accredited Lleyn yearling rams enjoying having their fleeces off, and fresh grass that has arrived since the regular showers we have received this week. Enquiries beginning to come for breeding stock for this season. Customers looking at performance figures and sheep that are able flourish on a grass based system, with the the rising costs of inputs.

Enquiries beginning to come-in for breeding stock for sale. Took camera with me to check sheep this morning.

Lambs have been weaned 10 days and ewes shorn 5 days.

MV accredited and performance recorded Lleyn and Blue Texel yearlings and lambs available off the farm.

All looking good in the sun, and grass freshening up after a couple of storms over the weekend.

Applying Crovect to the ewes and dry hogs at the beginning of May was the right decision this year. There were no fly strike issues, but they were ready to have their jackets off yesterday.

Trying to get the shearers protected from the sun was a priority, however, we ran out of tarpaulin, so the wrapper did an amazing job in the heat, plus the two helpers, fresh from their ‘A’ levels, pushing up.

Well here she is thriving, after a premature birth, where her mum died and she was going that way a few times during the first days of her life. Managed to adopt her on to a Lleyn ewe and she is now the dominant lamb in the field 😊

****PRISON****
The biggest disruptor at lambing here is the broody ewe, trying to steal newly born lambs. Have found the “prison” works well, especially towards the end of lambing when the shed is not monitored as regularly. How do others deal with this problem?

A three race summer 10k trail series is held during August and the Hereford & Borders Winter Cross Country League hold one of their races in December. The course was looking good today, considering various sections were under water a few weeks ago.
