With the temperature dropping, our Vet Techs have pulled together some of their favourite pre-weaned calf winter tips. Keep an eye out over the next few weeks. First up.....

🌾🐄 Alter the Milk: Boost Your Calves' Energy & Comfort! 🐄🌾

1️⃣ Increase Milk Volume: More milk means more energy for regulating body temperature.

2️⃣ Adjust Powder Concentration: Increase the concentration of your milk replacer.

3️⃣ Warm Up the Milk: Heating milk to the perfect temperature (38-40°C) can help provide warmth during chilly days.

👉 Important: Always consult your vet or vet tech before changing your feeding protocol. Different milk replacers have specific recommendations! 📋

Keep your calves happy, healthy, and warm! 💪🐮

🐮🌬️❄️ Keep Your Calves Warm This Winter! ❄️🌬️🐮

Cold weather means calves use extra energy to stay warm—energy that should go towards growth and immunity. Don’t let the cold slow them down!

Here’s how to keep your calves healthy and growing:
✅ Deep, Dry Bedding: when nesting, the calf’s back legs should not be visible.
✅ Feed more milk/milk solids: extra energy.
✅ Calf Jackets.
✅ Monitor calves: growth rate, and early signs of illness, and discuss calf health with your vet.

📞 Call the practice if you have any questions or speak to your vet. Let's keep your calves thriving this winter!

🐑 What are you planning on doing with your sheep scanning data? 🐑

Hopefully, you’re scanning session went well if you’ve already had it and you have hit the % you were aiming for. But what are you doing with that data❔❓

Recording it somewhere would be a great start (we now have Digifarm available for sheep data – speak to your vet). Analysing that data and grouping your ewes according to scan results NOW will give you the best chance of optimising body condition and nutrition ahead of lambing.

It's all about maximising productivity and ensuring the health of our flock. Let's keep those numbers up🐏

Yesterday we hosted a farmer meeting about the exciting new use of Artificial Intelligence in monitoring dairy cow behaviour and welfare.
We were very lucky to have Dr Bobby Hyde from VetVision AI & the University of Nottingham join us to introduce the new machine learning tools VVAI is making available to farm vets.
Will (one of the vets from our Derbyshire team) followed with a brief overview of how this tool is going to be made available to our clients and showed some example data from a trial farm he has been working on.
Artificial Intelligence is set to be the next huge step in improving cattle housing, identifying problem animals, and maximising cow welfare!
If you are interested in learning more please give us a call 🐄📹📈

Calving is associated with profound metabolic changes which often lead to a combination of fatty liver, poor energy status, low blood calcium, reduced feed intakes and oxidative stress. These conditions adversely affect milk yield, cow health and increase the chances of premature culling. Blood test...

The results from the 2024 National BVD Survey make interesting reading (if you’re into that kind of thing…). Compiled from responses from 673 farmers, 58% of whom are in England, with 14% each from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, here Rob discusses the key points. 478 farmers claimed to be...

🌍💊 World AMR Awareness Week (18-24 November) 💊🌍
Our vets work closely with you, reviewing your data as part of your health plan, veterinary attestation (VAN), or during medicines visits. This helps us take proactive steps to protect your animals and ensure we're using antibiotics responsibly.

📊 The AHDB Medicines Hub is an online tool that makes it easier for farmers to track and manage antimicrobial usage. Want to stay ahead of regulatory changes? Contact our office today to learn how to upload your data and be part of the solution to AMR.

Let's work together to protect the health of both humans and animals—today and in the future! 💪🐑

⚠️Graphic photograph warning ⚠️

Unfortunately, this calf sustained an injury to her eye that did not respond to topical treatment and eyelid closure. So the difficult decision was made to remove the eye to ensure a full recovery and hopefully a long future in the herd. After sedating her we removed the eye and before long she was up and drinking like nothing had happened. She has always been the most charismatic in her group, even with the injury and she is now enjoying the extra attention she is receiving!
