This afternoon Charlie was starting some beef cows and heifers on a synchronisation protocol ready for serving at the end of next week.
The aim for this herd, who uses this service each year, is to calve 90% within a 6 week calving block. He has previously achieved over 70% conception rate to this protocol so fingers crossed for this batch!

Bacteria and Fungi
Did you know - alongside bacteria and fungi, there are up to 1 million protozoa in every ml of rumen fluid! They can be seen swimming under the microscope in this sample of rumen fluid taken on-farm this week.
A healthy rumen microbiome is essential for a healthy cow, as if it becomes unbalanced it may result in rumen acidosis. This may be seen as unexplained diarrhoea, a decrease in body condition, and reduced milk yield among other signs. If you're worried about acidosis in your cattle get in contact with us today!

When the Abomasum, often referred to as the ‘true stomach’, fills with gas and twists from its natural position in the abdomen, ventral just right of midline, to high on the left-hand side. This causes the cow to become uncomfortable and her guts to reduce in function. Resulting in a cow down on production, dull and lethargic and often with dry and reduced passage of muck. Your vets will use a variety of ways to detect an LDA but most classically the ‘ping’ on the left-hand side.
LDA’s are most likely to occur in recently calved cows who are in negative energy balance as their natural lactation curve ramps up.
Treatment often involves surgical correction as seen in the video! Plus supportive therapy including pain relief, rehydration and readily available energy to treat the underlying cause. When treated early, cows are often back eating and milking in no time!
