From a recent graduate:
“Me and my 7 month puppy Otto just completed a 6 week course of 'Clever Canines' at jump&go with Raychel. It was brilliant, 'Otto' being so young thought everything was great fun and Raychel fully understood and had some great games and tricks to help me understand how to train him effectively and keep him more consistent. She really understands dogs behaviour and was great to be in a safe environment where Otto could play when possible. Will being attending other lessons and courses with Raychel in the future.”

Puppies are not clean slates !
You often hear people say 'get a puppy they are a clean slate'

As a behaviourist and breeder I can confidently tell you this is not true. Both nature and nurture has a huge impact.
A puppy will inherit genes from its parents and these genes will impact the puppies genetic potential to behave in a particular way.
Such as :
Using aggression as a strategy to deal with difficult situations
Sociability towards people and dogs
Fearful responses
Sound sensitivity
Strong instinctive behaviour to hunt, chase, grab, hold and guard.
Trainability which includes the ability to learn self control as humans desire it.

When people breed dogs they sometimes select for specific traits and sometimes not. If someone is breeding for a particular look, colour or just money then these traits can become altered becoming stronger or weaker or unbalanced. This can make a dog dangerous for example breeding a dog with gameness and reducing human sociability.

Then the puppy is born and the first 8 weeks learning with the breeder will have an huge impact on the development of all these genetic traits.

My five puppies have all come from the same parents and been reared in the same environment. They have very individual personalities. The training and socialisation they receive in their new homes will only influence the genes and first learning, it won't change their personalities.

So if you are looking for a puppy
Firstly learn about breed traits and instincts and make sure you pick a puppy that will suit your lifestyle. For example there no point getting a breed that is 'aloof with strangers' if you have 3 young children and lots of friends visiting.

Secondly meet the parents or (genes), see what they are like. Make sure you are meeting the actual parents, some people buy in puppy farmed litters and then 'hire' an adult of the same breed to pretend the puppies were bred there!!

Thirdly make sure the puppy has had plenty of early neurological stimulation and learning before it leaves the litter. Ask these questions.
1) What have the puppies seen?
2) Who and what have they met?
2) What have they learnt?
3) How have they learned to play?
4) What do they do if they get frustrated?
5) What do they do if they get bored?

A professional trainer can help support and guide you on the process of looking for a puppy. Don't wait till afterwards for help.

Prevention IS better than Cure. This goes for training and socialisation too, get a professional to help and guide you.

Puppies are building neural pathways with every experience, every day, make sure they're building ones you like.

First Learning is the strongest, make sure you get it right first time.

28/05/2024

When our dogs refuse to listen to cue or exhibit behaviours perceived as wilful defiance – we may describe them as being “stubborn”. However, attributing stubbornness to dogs may oversimplify their behaviour and hinder effective communication and training. This week, we'll explore the concept of "stubbornness" in dogs and shed light on the underlying factors that influence their actions.
Firstly, dogs do not see behaviours as right or wrong (like we do), but in terms of what works or doesn’t work. What may appear as stubbornness to us could stem from various reasons – here are some questions to ask yourself when you ask your dog to perform a cue and they do not respond:
What am I asking of them?
Dogs thrive on clear communication and consistent training. Behaviour that seems stubborn may simply be confusion. Our canine companions do not generalise behaviours well either, so you may have trained a cue in one situation, but have not yet proofed the cue in other environments or situations. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a well-trained dog. Practice patience and consistency in your training efforts, and celebrate small victories along the way.
Why should they respond?
When you are training your dog, it should be fun for both of you! They are obviously not robots and need the right motivation to work with us – this could be food, play, fuss – but the reinforcement on offer should be something that your individual dog finds motivating. Once they respond more reliably you can delay rewards and present them randomly, but there should be still something in it for them.
How are they feeling?
Fearful or anxious dogs may exhibit behaviours that appear stubborn as a coping mechanism. For example, a dog refusing to approach a certain area or perform a task may be experiencing fear. Understanding and addressing the underlying emotions can help alleviate these behaviours and build trust between the dog and handler.
Equally, stubbornness may also be a result of an underlying physical discomfort or health issue as pain or discomfort can make dogs reluctant to engage in certain activities or follow cues. It's essential to rule out any medical concerns through a thorough veterinary examination before addressing behaviour issues.
Therefore, rather than attributing stubbornness to dogs, it's essential to approach their behaviour with empathy, understanding, and effective training techniques. By recognizing the underlying factors influencing their actions and addressing them with patience and consistency, we can build stronger bonds and foster positive behaviour with your dogs.

22/05/2024

For many dog owners, the question of whether it's too late to train their dog may arise, especially if their pet is displaying undesirable behaviours or if they've recently adopted an older dog. The good news is that it's rarely too late to begin training your canine companion. While it may require patience, consistency, and understanding, we can teach an old dog new tricks!
One of the most important factors in training an older dog is understanding that they can still learn and change their behaviour, despite any habits they may have developed over time. Dogs are incredibly adaptable creatures, and with the right approach, even ingrained behaviours can be modified. Research has suggested that older dogs may have slowed physically and may have developed different motivations, but this does not mean that they are unable to learn.
The first step in training an older dog is to establish clear communication and trust. Positive reinforcement techniques, such as rewarding desired behaviours with treats, toys, praise or even the environment can be highly effective in encouraging your dog to learn new cues or behaviours. Consistency is key; setting aside regular training sessions and sticking to a routine will help reinforce new habits and prevent confusion.
It's also essential to tailor your training approach to your dog's individual needs and personality. Older dogs may have physical limitations or past experiences that influence their behaviour, so patience and understanding are crucial. Taking the time to observe your dog's reactions and adjusting your training plan accordingly can lead to more successful outcomes.
While it may take longer to see results with an older dog compared to a puppy, the bond formed through training can be incredibly rewarding. Not only does training provide mental stimulation and enrichment for your dog, but it also strengthens the bond between you and your furry friend.
If you need assistance training an older dog – we have group classes available to dogs over 6 months old and offer 1-1 training

Our Story

Pet Peeves Animal Behaviour is committed to helping owners with their furry companions. We ONLY use ‘kind’ positive reinforcement methods no matter what problem, as the human-animal bond is based on trust NOT fear.

Raychel is a qualified animal behaviourist offering behaviour consultations for behaviour problems in cats & dogs, this can include: house soiling, dog- human aggression, dog-dog aggression, barking, noise phobias etc. These work off a veterinary referral to take in consideration any medical problems that may be causing/ contributing to the problem.

Raychel graduated from the Royal Argicultural University in 2017 with a 2i in Animal Behaviour & Welfare and is currently undertaking the accreditation scheme from the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) in order to become a Certified Companion Animal Behaviourist (CCAB). She is currently a provisional member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) to gain the sufficient supervised experience in order to become a Full Member of the APBC.

Animal well-being is at the heart of Pet Peeves.
