As we head into the festive season, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your trust and support throughout the year. It has been a pleasure working with you and your wonderful pets! 🐾

I will be taking a short break for Christmas and will be unavailable until January 6th. If you have any urgent inquiries, please feel free to leave a message, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Classes and behaviour consultations are still available to book online.

Dogs have an exceptional sense of smell, far superior to ours. They can be trained to detect a huge array of odours, from narcotics and explosives, to cash and human illnesses, right the way through to endangered wildlife and plant species for conservation work. A dog’s sense of smell really is their super power!

Counting down to two! 🐶🐾🐕

If you have had an adolescent dog recently you will understand! I often tell my clients who are struggling with their adolescence dog it takes two years for your dog to be two years old and unfortunately, there is no way to speed up the process (although I would love to have a magic wand 🪄)

We all feel pressured to have the perfect dog but is important to understand what your adolescent dog is currently going through.

When Sonny was going through adolescence, I remember someone saying to me that during the adolescence phase, when you cue your dog it feels that they are asking you “WHY?” but when they hit adulthood finally things click into place and you know what … it was true!! With Sonny his recall was always work in progress and he was on a long line and one day when he was two years old it suddenly just clicked into place. He could come off his long line! Now he gets ear problems so occasionally he does have to go back on his long line but that’s more medical than it is that he is not responding to me.

Now why do I say two years? Well it’s important to understand that your dog’s brain is not fully developed until they have finished their adolescence phase (around 18 months to 2 years old). The part of the brain that is responsible for risk taking analysis and emotional regulation is the last place to fully form. Also during adolescence, males also have the highest testosterone levels that they will in their whole lives and females are likely to be experiencing hormonal shifts as well. Although when they reach adulthood, they still have a lot to learn but they’re able to concentrate, assess risk, consolidate, and become more consistent.

My lovely Harley is 14 months old and she’s gone through her first season, so we too are in the process of getting through those initial two years. Around six months old, Harley started barking at people, she didn’t like hands going over her head and this was her way of telling people to not touch her before they could even do so. We did a lot of work with her, which eventually led to find out that she is hyper mobile. She’s been on a pain trial that’s been going well. We have been building her confidence around people that aren’t gonna touch her and training her in various environments around people. We are now at the point that she rarely barks at other people on walks, and often have walks where she hasn’t barked once. She was well socialised with people from a young age and was super friendly but as soon as adolescence hit her, something changed. For the last six months we’ve been building confidence and getting her out and about in a positive way - also celebrating any tiny step in the right direction and telling myself that it will get better in time.

For anybody also counting down those two years I’d like to encourage you to keep going. Things will change and they will get better - I think the saying is “trust the process”. Keep your head up and continue on doing what you need to do to help your young dog navigate life. I know it’s tough, but try not to compare yourself or your teenager to others (partnerships you see on social media, on walks, in classes or even dogs you had previously).

If you need professional help, seek it out, sometimes even just for the moral support. I know I have needed the support, and I am more than happy to guide you through this process.
