🦷February Is Pet Dental Health Month🦷

85% of dogs and cats over the age of 3 have signs of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is used to describe plaque induced oral disease.

How to start brushing your animals teeth:
🪥Use pet toothpaste (vets and nurses can recommend this to you)
🪥Brushing once a day
🪥Daily brushing can return gum inflammation to normal
🪥Gentle circular motions at 45 degrees

What if your animal doesn’t let you brush their teeth? There are other ways to help prevent plaque and dental disease:
🦷Plaque off powders
🦷Dental care kibbles (food)
🦷Toothbrush toys (these are designed with bristles on the sides)
🦷Dental sticks (with low sugars)

If you are worried about your pets dental health, book an appointment with a veterinary surgeon for advice.

Sadly we have had a female tabby cat handed in to the practice this morning. She was found deceased at the roadside in Denwick. She is not microchipped so if you can help us find her owner we would appreciate it; we're sure someone will be missing her 😪🐾💙

Unfortunately we have had a deceased black domestic short haired, unneutered male cat brought in last night. The cat was found in Hipsburn and unfortunately not microchipped.

Ðue to the current seriousness of the bird flu outbreak and the potential risk it poses can we please kindly ask that wild birds are not brought to the practice under any circumstances. We may be able to offer advice over the phone. Thank you.

DO NOT 'RESCUE' A FLEDGLING, LET IT FLY!

The process of fledging begins with jumping out of the nest. It then takes 1-3 days for them to learn to fly. During this time the parents care for them ON THE GROUND.

A Fledgling is a juvenile bird that has outgrown the hatchling and nesting stages but may not have learnt to fly yet. It’s not uncommon to see fledgling birds on the ground, since many species of birds push their fledgling young out of the nest to help them become independent. So, unlike with fallen nestlings, the best thing to do is to leave the fledgling alone as it learns to fly, after you’ve made sure that the area it’s in is safe.

I was told today that in America it’s been “Veterinary Receptionists week”. I’m quite sure we don’t have similar week in the UK, - although when I googled it, I did see we had a “day” last year☺️. Trust America to do it better.

So, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our Receptionist team who really do work hard to deliver a good service to our clients. It can be a tough job at times and can take multi-tasking to a level I hadn’t experienced in my previous jobs. But it’s such a worthwhile and interesting job and we have a great team. So thank you Steph, Sandra, Kim and our latest lovely new full time member Gemma who’s been a great addition to our team. Thanks also to Julia and all of the nurses who help out on reception when needed in addition to their other duties.

Finally here’s a photo of my cat Polly, demonstrating how we recover in the evenings following a busy day.
