With the hot temperatures, I'm keeping a lookout for blue-green algae blooms in our ponds. Our dogs swim and walk tummy-deep in the ponds, occasionally drinking the water. I've learned what steps to take to keep our ponds safe for our dogs and local wildlife.

Symptoms of Blue-Green Algae Sickness in Dogs

** Vomiting
** Diarrhea
** Blood in stool or black, tarry stool
** Pale mucous membranes
** Jaundice
** Seizures
** Disorientation
** Coma

VacciCheck is a titre test that measures the antibody levels in the blood. The test helps reduce vaccination failure, prevents over-vaccination consequences and helps owners and vets to make informed vaccination decisions.

Why titre test?
The veterinary industry agrees that vaccines are necessary but the frequency in which they are administered is often debated. In particular, the recommendation to administer core vaccines to adult dogs and cats at 3 year intervals (or longer) rather than annually resulted in differences of opinions among veterinarians.

It has now been shown that duration of immunity after vaccination with MLV vaccines for most animals will be many years or a lifetime, based on challenge and serological studies (Schultz et al. 2010). If an animal already has a protective level of immunity, revaccination will not be required.

VacciCheck is a rapid and affordable option to check the titre levels for the core diseases that are vaccinated against. It provides easy to interpret results which determine whether the animal has a protective level of immune response or whether they need revaccination.

With high sensitivity and specificity, VacciCheck is designed to ensure that animals are protected whilst avoiding unncessary medical intervention.

This is supported by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Guidlines, which state that an animal that returns a positive titre has a protective level of immunity and therefore does not require revaccination.

There are a number of ways VacciCheck can be beneficial to determine a dog or cat's antibody titre levels of the 3 core diseases:

- To determine when it is optimal to end the vaccine series
- After a dog or cat vaccination to indicate immunisation success was achieved
- To determine if a booster is required

Here is a lovely story from Jo a Churchills owner to Margo and now Guardian to Ernie a future Churchills Dad
We were very lucky to have Margo, a 2021 Churchills Pup, daughter of Winnie & Hendrix. Margo has brought us so much joy, so much so we asked to go on another Churchills waiting list for another puppy just a few months after having her. ( these dogs are like fur humans! So intelligent, comical, loving and fantastic companions) - circumstances changed and after long conversations with Michelle and wonderful guidance and advice we were accepted to be guardians to a puppy from Rose & Hendrix’s litter. Not only were we grateful to Michelle for giving us this opportunity but also excited that Margo would have a half brother to join her. We picked Ernie up in September 2023 and he has completed our family. Being a guardian has not been daunting or any different to when we got Margo, he is a very special pup and we cannot thank Michelle and the Churchills family for all the ongoing support and advice. Any questions or queries we have had have always been answered with care and positive advice. Nothing has been too much trouble. Michelle has always been honest and compassionate about what is expected of a guardian but also allowed Ernie to be part of our family. Michelle’s knowledge and compassion for these dogs is second to none and we value her friendship and commitment greatly. It’s lovely to keep in touch regularly with photos and updates, sharing our stories as the dogs grow without feeling any intrusion and we look forward to loving Ernie throughout his life and seeing the continuing growth of the Churchills family. Being a guardian is very rewarding.

Do you know about titre antibody testing rather than automatically vaccinating for distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus? (DHP)
It’s a simple blood test that you do rather than automatically vaccinating.
Did you know that the DHP vaccine is every three years, not yearly and rather than vaccinating blindly, you check their antibodies? Most dogs do not need to repeat the DHP vaccination into adulthood. Puppies need their vaccine, but that cover might last them a lifetime.
Here are the results for six Dogs that were due their three yearly checks. As you can see by the results, they all have antibodies for distemper hepatitis and Pavo virus and do not need the vaccination. We will test them again in another three years.
The Dogs, ages very from between two and nine years old. Olive and Merebelle have only ever had their puppy vaccinations.

We pride ourselves on raising our dogs as family, and we sometimes have little ones available for guardian/care homes. There is no cost….our families pay for their Australian Labradoodles with care and love by providing them with a loving home.

This enables our mums and dads to be part of a family and enjoy a wonderful life.
We are going to be looking for a new family to join us. We will be sharing a lovely video of the Chocolate little girl in question very soon.

Another puppy has died from the Lepto vaccine. (not ours) please please make an informed choice, just like you would for your children. our sweet, devoted animals depend on us to make the right choice. This is so sad and so avoidable.
I used to only give Lepto 2 and never lepto 4 now I don’t give either.
If you have friends that are buying puppies of any breed, please make them aware of the dangers of this vaccine.
We only want the best, not just for our puppies, but for all puppies and dogs. please share your knowledge with others.

GROOMERS
As you are aware we are compiling a list of good Australian Labradoodle groomers. The list is below. If you have a good groomer who understands the Australian Labradoodle cut, please can you share their details. Please add a photo of the groom.

We are looking for groomers that cut them like a traditional Australian Labradoodle, not cockapoo cuts, please. (Short ears, nice muzzle,)
No shaved faces
Long or short doesn’t matter it’s the head shape and dogs happiness that’s important.

Please give us the name of the person who grooms for you. Just like hairdressers it's not the salon, it's the individual hairdresser that you choose to let loose on your locks. Groomers are the same they all have their own individual ability and style.

A top tip ask the groomer to show you photos of their Australian Labradoodle Grooms. Take photos with you that you can leave with them. It's not a good idea to just show them on your phone, as they will likely forget. They will be busy and may not have a photographic memory.
