What we got up to Wednesday!
~Billy Marshall

🏇 🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇

Hi, my name is Billy Marshall I am now a 22-year-old jockey who used to ride at Buckswood stables and compete for the Buckswood school NSEA team.
Since leaving Buckswood I have continued learning and working within the equine industry.
Firstly in the discipline of eventing, I started by working for Vittoria panizzon, where I learned much about her ethos around eventing. During my time here I competed for owners on there young horses.
I then went on to, further my coaching skills by gaining my BHS level 4 complete, whilst training under Pammy Hutton at the Talland school of equitation. Here I upped my eventing even more by competing her young mare upto 2* . I also learnt to refine my dressage skills and was able to compete to advanced medium level.
Whilst at Talland I gained experience with retraining horses, and bringing on youngsters, introducing them to each discipline.
Recently I have gained my jockey license whilst working at Jonjo O’Neill racing. I’m currently working lots with the breakers and schooling over fences regularly. I have had a couple of races under rules, and ridden in point to points.

Being apart of the Buckswood Riding Academy team really was the highlight of my week whilst at school and the best part of the campus 🐎

We thought we would share with you 5 fun facts about Mares and their Foals 💕

Gestation Period 🌟

The gestation period for a mare is approximately 11 months for a foal to fully develop. Some foals can be a few weeks late or early. Occasionally, a foal can be up to four weeks late. Most breeders try to time foaling for early spring, so the foal can grow and exercise throughout the summer months.

Nocturnal birth 🌟

Foals are most often born at night, and birth often happens very quickly. In the wild, this nocturnal and rapid birth helps to protect a mare and foal from predators when they are at their most vulnerable.

A new-born foal will weigh between 80-120 pounds 🌟

Foals Can Stand Within Two Hours of Birth 🌟

Foals can stand and walk, and trot shortly after birth. Ideally, a foal should be up and nursing within two hours of birth. They can gallop within 24 hours.

Mare’s Milk 🌟

The first milk a foal gets from its mother is called colostrum. A foal needs about two litres of colostrum in the first 24 hours of life. Foals will nurse from their mother for up to 6 months and will start to eat solid food around 2-3 months of age.

An incredible moment at the National Equine Show in Birmingham. Charlotte discussed about Madison’s riding and what she has been achieving in all her riding lessons so far this year! A big pinch me moment for any equestrian! 💫

“Since leaving Buckswood Riding Academy I have been producing many young horses and competing up to national level. In 2022 I competed at Badminton Grassroots which I had been working towards for four years with my then current horse Herbie!
Currently I am producing a six year old ex racehorse and breaking in an Irish three year old. My plan for the next two years is to get them both out Eventing up to BE novice level and see what they can do!
Being a part of the riding team at Buckswood was so much fun and the highlight of my week!
We were out a lot competing together and training together at school!
It’s brilliant that the school has the facilities on site and horses that can be competed for people who don’t own their own horse”.

This Scheme is for those who do not own a horse and who would like to have the opportunity to develop their riding and stable management skills by having exclusive access to a Buckswood horse or pony that is kept as if it was their own, under the supervision of the stables staff.

What we got up to Wednesday!
~Oliver Watson 🇬🇧 💂‍♀️

Since leaving the Buckswood Horse Riding Academy, Oliver has joined the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR) where he carried out mounted ceremonial duties on State and Royal occasions.

~1st picture is Oliver on parade ready for the birthday parade for Queen Elizabeth.

~The 2nd picture is a flatwork lesson of the riding course known as “khaki riding course”.

~3rd Picture was the first training session for the musical ride before the season started 🥶

~4th Picture- Returning back from Horse Guard Parade where they conduct their ceremonial guard duties (See Oliver front left in this picture)

~5th, 6th & 7th Picture- Performing for the Moroccan Royal Family in El Jadida which is the equivalent of Olympia Horse Show.

~8th & 9th Picture- Longines Global Champions Tour London, this was for the prize giving for the event (Oliver even made it to the big screen!)

~10th Picture- Oliver got the opportunity to go out Hunting!!

The Buckswood Stables family are incredibly proud of Oliver and have loved following his journey since leaving Buckswood. Keep shining Oliver and doing our country proud! 🇬🇧🏇💂‍♀️
