🐰 This week is Rabbit Awareness Week, and this year's theme is 'Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies', so today, we wanted to share a little more about the importance of a balanced diet.

Rabbits require a diet based on 80% grass or feeding hay, 15% greens, 5% good-quality pellets or nuggets (around one egg cup twice a day), and fresh water.

Feeding nuggets ensures your rabbit eats a balanced diet, as it won't have the option to 'selective feed' by picking its favourite parts out of a mixed diet.

Feeding the correct diet is probably the single most important way to ensure a healthy and long-lived rabbit. Here are six top tips for ensuring your rabbit has a balanced diet...

🐇💧 You should ensure that your rabbit always has access to fresh, clean drinking water.

🐇🌿 When providing food for your rabbit, fresh grass is the preferred choice, but when not available, hay is a good substitute that is available all year round and provides them with the nutrients they require.

🐇🌾Hay provides lots of long-strand fibre, keeping your rabbit's gut moving. It is also the closest thing to a natural diet. Rabbits would naturally graze all day in the wild, so please ensure your rabbit has an unlimited supply.

🐇 🥗 Complete rabbit food is also available, but it should not be used as a replacement for hay. Please use it as a nutritional supplement.

🐇🥦 Many plants can be safely enjoyed by rabbits, including broccoli, parsley, spring greens, and dandelions. They also love the leaves from an apple or hazel tree. When feeding them plants, you should keep the portion sizes to a minimum.

🐇🥕 Fruits should be counted as a treat for your rabbit as they are high in sugar. Your rabbit may enjoy a grape, slice of apple, slice of orange or carrots.

Our Pet Health for Life plan is designed to make your life easier. It includes all the doses your pet needs for year-round flea treatment, ensuring you never have to worry about missing their treatment again!

When it comes to parasites in cats and dogs, regular treatments reduce discomfort for your pet and possibly yourself. In addition, regular treatment helps prevent disease from spreading between animals and also stops some diseases in people. Ignoring the problem will only make things worse and may end up affecting not just your pet but your home, too.

Here are some ways to tell if your cat or dog has fleas:
⚪ Bite marks and scabs
⚪ Excessive scratching
⚪ Itchy bite marks on your skin
⚪ Tiny black specks in your pet’s fur or on their bedding

Eggs can lie dormant for months, so you need to treat your cat or dog for fleas all year round.

🥪🌞 Today marks National Picnic Day, signalling the impending arrival of summer and the embrace of outdoor activities with freshly made picnics.

Imagine the joy of your dog joining in the fun on this National Picnic Day. You can prepare a dog-friendly packed lunch to include with your picnic, as many human foods are toxic or can cause gastrointestinal problems for dogs.

Ensuring your pet's safety is paramount. We recommend packing regular treats or even a frozen treat for them to enjoy slowly. Remember, when you're out in the sun with your pet, always be safe, stay in the shade, and avoid the hottest parts of the day.

From contact with other animals to exploring the great outdoors, our pets have plenty of opportunities to pick up nasty parasites daily.

Parasites can negatively affect pets' and humans' health, so it is important to ensure your pet is protected against them.

Parasites are a common occurrence in the UK, and our pets are particularly vulnerable to them. Some of the most prevalent parasites found here are:

🦟 Ticks: Tick bites can pass on diseases such as Lymes Disease and cause allergic reactions or infections at the site of the bite.

🐛 Worms: There is a wide variety of worms, such as tapeworms, roundworms, heartworms, whipworms, and hookworms.

🐛Lungworm: Lungworms are potentially deadly parasites carried by foxes, slugs and snails.

PeakMoor Fleas: Fleas affect dogs and cats and can be seen all year round. Signs that your pet may be suffering from fleas include itching, scratching and licking. You may also see 'flea dirt' – tiny dark specks that look a little like grains of soil and go red when wet.

Keep your pet protected and book your parasite treatment so they are flea-free to be themselves >>https://ow.ly/fg7950SfmTN

Did you know? The hot summer months create an increase in toxic blue-green algae across the UK.

This may appear as green or greenish-brown scum or foam on the water surface and contains toxins harmful to animals. It is not actually an algae but an accumulation of cyanobacteria. Dogs often swallow it by drinking water from an affected lake, river, or pond or by licking their fur after swimming. If you think blue-green algae is present, do not let your dog near it.

Unfortunately, the toxins can cause severe liver damage and can ultimately be fatal. There are currently no known preventative medicines, and prompt veterinary treatment is essential to ensure any chance of recovery.

If you are concerned, please get in touch with us immediately.

Hello! My name is Kasia, and I'm thrilled to share a bit about my journey in the veterinary field over the past four years. My adventure began over four years ago when I started as a Pet Care Assistant (PCA) on the very first day of lockdown. This role provided me with invaluable experience and set the foundation for my career in veterinary nursing.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to train as a Student Veterinary Nurse, a role that I embraced wholeheartedly. Over three years of rigorous training and hands-on experience, I learned a great deal and am now proud to be a fully qualified Veterinary Nurse. I am incredibly grateful for this journey and the support I received along the way.

One of the most impactful experiences in my career was my time in Tanzania, Africa, where I participated in the Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) neutering programme. This incredible opportunity allowed me to step beyond first opinion work and contribute to a significant cause. The experience was immensely rewarding, and I learned so much from the dedicated people I met and the animals I helped.

I also work for the Pet Blood Bank, where I am involved in collecting blood donations for dogs facing life-threatening conditions and emergencies. This role is incredibly fulfilling and gives me a profound sense of purpose, knowing that I am directly contributing to saving the lives of animals in critical situations. The impact of these donations on the health and recovery of the dogs is immense, and being part of such a vital service reinforces my commitment to animal care and the veterinary profession.

Recently, I achieved another milestone by becoming a Lead Nurse, a role that I find exceptionally fulfilling. Being employed by Linnaeus has provided me with numerous opportunities for career progression and professional growth. I am excited to continue advancing in my career and am committed to providing the highest standard of care to our patients and their families.

Happy National Bee Day! 🐝❤️

Let's create a buzz together by planting more flowers and supporting our local beekeepers.

Bees are essential for pollinating plants, including the fruits and vegetables we enjoy; by cultivating bee-friendly flowers in our gardens, we can offer sustenance and refuge to these vital pollinators.

Remember to be mindful of using pesticides in your garden, as they can be harmful to bees and other beneficial insects.

Do you have any bee-friendly plants in your local outdoor area or garden? We'd love to hear your favourites in the comments below.

👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ Student Veterinary Nurses are working towards completing a qualification with a college or a university to become Registered Veterinary Nurses. While training, our students enrol in the RCVS and complete practical training.

Practical experience is a vital part of veterinary nurse training for our students. Our practice team supports them, providing supervision and guidance to assist them with developing their knowledge and clinical skills. This experience, alongside their qualification, prepares them to complete the roles that a Registered Veterinary Nurse undertakes.

When aspiring to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), you have two distinct paths to choose from. You can either pursue a vocational (diploma) route, which offers an on-the-job training option. You can also complete a higher education (degree) route, which provides you with the opportunity to experience university life whilst training. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

We encourage progression and growth and enjoy celebrating our Student Veterinary Nurses when they graduate and become a Registered Veterinary Nurse. 💚

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR RACE FOR LIFE RUNNERS! 🏅

📅🏃🏃‍♀️On Sunday, some of our wonderful team participated in the Race for Life event at Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy, raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Our team was made up of Pauline, Abbi, Camelia, Ulrike, Kelly, Rachael, Kasia, Kelsey, Juan, Vikki, Dawn, Hayley and Pauline's two young daughters, Scarlett, and Daisy, who participated in the children's event.

The team to date has raised over £450 for Cancer Research, a cause close to Pauline's heart, 💗 as she is a cancer survivor and, in 2020, underwent treatment for triple-negative breast cancer.

While everyone had to stay at home due to COVID restrictions, Pauline had to face chemotherapy, hospital appointments and surgery alone and received life-changing surgery that also involved MRSA and sepsis along the way.

This year, she completed the Cancer Research UK Race for Life to raise as much money as possible for cancer research.

Our Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) can undertake a multitude of roles, providing crucial support and assistance to our veterinary nurses and vets.

We are passionate about supporting our PCAs in expanding their role as they form such an integral part of our veterinary nursing teams. PCAs can grow their skills through training, which can be done either in-house or through formal qualifications. They may also support their teams through mentoring and teaching or take on leadership responsibilities. This dynamic nature of the role keeps things interesting and engaging. 🦮🐈🐇🐁🐢🦎

Their unwavering dedication and compassion are not just qualities we value, but they also significantly contribute to the overall well-being of our patients and the smooth running of our practice. This impact is what makes this role truly rewarding. 💚
