If your dog barks at the back door and you instantly open it… you’ve just trained them to bark.

Most dogs aren’t asking for the toilet every 20 minutes. They’ve learned:

Bark → human moves → door opens.

That loop gets stronger every single time.

Instead:
When they bark, calmly leave the room for 15 seconds.
No drama. No eye contact. No door opening.

Then give them planned opportunities to go out when they’re calm and not demanding it.

Reward calm behaviour.
Don’t reward noise.

Because if barking works at the back door… it’ll start working everywhere else too.

Have you accidentally trained this without realising? 👇

Don’t hit dogs, it’s stupid, you’re stupid.

Top 5 breeds for flat city living.

Small doesn’t automatically mean “flat-friendly.”

And big doesn’t automatically mean “needs a garden.”

City living is about:
Noise tolerance.
Energy levels.
Ability to switch off.
And an owner who actually trains.

I’ve seen calm Greyhounds thrive in flats…
And tiny dogs cause absolute chaos.

Choosing a breed for living in a flat isn’t about what looks cute on Instagram.
It’s about lifestyle compatibility.

What breed do you live with in a flat — and would you choose them again?

Not every dog needs a walk every single day.

If your dog backs away from the door…
Runs when the harness comes out…
Freezes, yawns, licks lips, avoids eye contact…

That’s communication.

We’re so obsessed with “they must be walked” that we forget to ask:
Do they actually want to?

Listening to your dog isn’t weakness.
It’s leadership.

You can build confidence. You can train around it. You can meet their needs in other ways — enrichment, play, training games, calm time together.

Quality time > forced miles.

Are you listening… or insisting? 👇

Unpopular opinion?

If your dog is peeing on shop signs, benches, plants for sale, or someone’s display outside their business… that’s not “just what dogs do.”

It’s lazy handling.

Public space doesn’t mean public toilet.
And just because your dog can wee somewhere doesn’t mean they should.

We talk a lot about responsible ownership — this is part of it.

Am I being dramatic… or is this just basic standards?

Mayhew has been supporting dogs, cats and communities for well over a century — and their work today goes far beyond rehoming.

From crisis pet care to community support, they’re helping people keep their pets, not just rescue them when things go wrong.

That matters.

If you live in London, chances are their work has impacted someone you know.

Have you ever adopted from Mayhew… volunteered… or visited them?

If your dog can’t be called away from another dog…
they’re not ready to be off lead.

Controversial? Maybe.
True? Absolutely.

“Friendly” isn’t enough.
“Mostly listens” isn’t enough.
If you can’t interrupt it, you can’t control it.

Real freedom comes after real reliability.

Be honest — can you call your dog away, first time, every time? 👇

Are Frenchies the easy little clowns everyone thinks they are…

Or are they tiny, clever masterminds running the entire household? 😅

Be honest — what’s yours really like?

“They were just saying hello…”

Until they weren’t.

On-lead greetings look harmless — but tension, tight leads and trapped body language can flip a situation fast.

This is exactly why I don’t allow on-lead meet-ups.

👇 Be honest…
Do you let your dog greet others on lead? Why or why not?

Let’s talk about it.

Adolescence is where you really find out how your training is going. 😅

Big feelings. Big energy. Selective hearing.

If you’ve got a teenage dog right now, this one’s for you 👇
What’s the hardest thing about your adolescent dog at the moment?
