Could your cat have hidden arthritis?

Did you know that cats are considered Senior once they are over 7 years old? Have you noticed any changes in your older cat?

Arthritis is often overlooked in cats as they're masters at hiding pain. Watch for subtle signs like reduced jumping, stiffness, or grooming issues. There are lots of treatment and management options and early detection is key to managing their comfort.

Polly is a very bouncy boxer and loves our sofas! She’s recently had surgery for a Mast Cell Tumour on her leg. These skin tumours can often look fairly innocent but can behave very aggressively if left untreated. Mast cell tumours are one of the most common skin cancers seen in dogs and all breeds are at risk. Luckily for Polly she came to see Claire for a health check and the lump was biopsied whilst Polly enjoyed a gravy bone. We always recommend checking out any lumps or bumps you notice as early detection can save lives.

We’ve had lots to celebrate at Beacon View recently and last week we treated ourselves to a delicious pizza dinner at The Drill Hall in Sandwich.

We were too busy chatting together to take a photo before the pizza had been demolished; a sign of a great friendly team and yummy food! 🩵💜

Continuing our meet the team series please allow us to introduce Katie!

Katie joined Beacon View in 2021. While providing cover work, she formed a strong bond with the practice and our clients. Having grown up locally in Deal, Katie moved back to the area after her time at Vet School in Bristol.

Katie has always loved being around animals and after helping out at a veterinary practice when she was 13 she became fascinated with veterinary medicine and was certain she wanted to pursue a career as a vet. Katie graduated from Bristol Vet School with distinction, receiving an award for the highest grade in her year group.

“I enjoy meeting different people and their pets and building relationships over time. I love the variety of working in veterinary practice and how no two days are ever the same. In veterinary medicine there is always something new to learn!”

A skilled surgeon with a focus on soft tissue procedures, she is currently studying for her certificate in surgery. Katie is also a valuable member of our leadership team.

At home Katie has two dogs of her own, one very energetic Sprocker Spaniel called Rupert and a cheeky German Spitz called Freddie; both of whom entertain Katie at agility training. Katie also has a lovely rabbit called Spot who thinks that she is a dog!

Last weekend, we held our Beacon View Summer Event, and it was an absolute blast! The festivities kicked off at Joes Bows, where we had a fantastic time practicing our archery skills and throwing some axes!

Afterward, we indulged in some Mexican food and cocktails. We also had a bonus pizza dinner at our favourite, The Drill Hall Sandwich, but that’s another story. It was a perfect way to unwind and savour the summer with our incredible team!

One of our team values is to celebrate successes together, and it was wonderful to get together to enjoy some fun and good food. We’ve had some big announcements this year, with the biggest still to come! Our team are behind everything we achieve as a practice.

Thank you to our team for all their hard work! Here's to even more successes and good times in the future 💜🩵

Nacho was a pretty chilled customer and made himself right at home! He has joined our Complete Care Club so now enjoys benefits like complimentary consultations, parasite treatments in the post, nail clips and a wide range of discounts. Our Club can help you budget for your pets and have peace of mind that you’ve got the routine care covered.

Our Club isn’t an insurance which is one of the reasons we recently partnered with Pet Proactive, to cover your pets for illness and injury. PetPractive are an exciting company who provide your pets with personalised quotes and are often a lot cheaper than other leading pet insurance providers. They also promise that your premiums don’t go up if you claim and you only pay one excess per year instead of per condition.

Inspired by the Paris Olympics we thought we’d have some fun by hosting our own "Vet Olympics"!

Over the next few weeks we will be holding mini events to show off our skills! We’ve bravely created three teams: Vets, Nurses and Client Care and designed a range of vet-themed games to test our skills.

So far we have competed in
1. ‘Poo’ bag toss
2. Fastest cone of shame builder
3. Plastic collar catch
4. Blindfolded p**p scoop.

Stay tuned to see what’s involved and which team has bragging rights!

If you enjoy watching our antics and betting on which team will be crowned as winners we’d be very grateful if you could make a charity donation to spread the love...

Please join us in welcoming Rachel to the Beacon View team! Rachel joined us earlier this year so many of you will have already had the privilege of meeting her 🥰

From a young age, Rachel was captivated by animals, inspired by the James Herriot books she read as a child. This passion initially led her to dream of becoming a vet in the Yorkshire Dales, although life took her down a different path. At school, Rachel’s strengths in reading and writing led her to study English at university, which transitioned into a career in teaching. However, after several years, she realised that working with animals, rather than teenagers, was her true calling.

“The incredibly positive and enthusiastic attitude of every single team member at Beacon View is such a wonderful environment to be in. Even when the third Friday emergency arrives here at half six, everyone just pulls together and continues to stay cheery—it makes such a difference to how you view your workplace. The other key factor about Beacon View is how much everyone cares, both about the animals that they look after and the people in those animals’ lives. They are considered and cared for as though they are members of the team’s extended family.”

Her primary interest lies in feline behaviour, a devotion stemming from her membership in the ‘Crazy Cat Lady Club’ since the age of three. She continually seeks to understand cats better and applies this knowledge to her own two cherished cats, Bertie and Betty-Boop.

Outside of work, Rachel enjoys outdoor activities like walking and paddle boarding, although her cats are yet to join her on these adventures! She is a fan of live comedy and cherishes time spent with family and friends. At home, Rachel indulges in reading, especially crime novels, and explores various creative hobbies such as sewing, glass painting, and her latest interest, pottery. She also volunteers regularly at a local rescue centre, believing that one can never have too many animals in their life.

This little piggy had a sore eye after a surprise encounter with a sneaky piece of hay. (Hiding in hay is their specialty, after all!)

Luckily, their owner spotted the problem right away. With some pain relief and eye drops, this brave piggy's eye is almost back to normal after just a few days. You can see the before and after pictures above.

Guinea pigs and rabbits are masters of disguise. As prey animals, they hide any signs of illness to avoid appearing vulnerable. Because of this, it's important to keep a watchful eye on them. If you notice any changes in their behavior or appearance, even something subtle, contact us right away! Early intervention can make a world of difference.

Poor Poppy! She recently came to us with a sore eye, and after numbing the area with local anaesthetic, Claire was able to remove a large grass seed that had gotten lodged under her eyelid. This unfortunate seed was causing her irritation and led to a painful corneal ulcer.

The good news is that Poppy made a quick recovery thanks to eye drops and pain medication.

Heads up! Grass seed season is upon us, and we've seen many pets with these pesky invaders stuck in their ears, feet, and eyes. To prevent discomfort, we recommend checking your furry friend at least once a day, especially after walks. If you notice any signs of irritation, don't hesitate to contact us!

With the Kent coast set to experience high temperatures over the next few days please take care to keep your pets cool. Heatstroke is a real risk, particularly for elderly dogs and brachycephalic breeds such as bulldogs and frenchies.

Please be reassured that we have air conditioning throughout our practice, so your pet will remain cool and calm at all times if you need to see us ❄️ 🐶 ❄️

The ever-charming Lomu is growing rapidly and he is bounding all over the place! He’s so excited to meet everyone that we were very lucky to capture a photo that wasn’t a blur!

Lomu is Claire’s ‘god-pup’ (yes, we’ve just made that up!) and he came in for a growth check. He has doubled in weight since we last saw him and has moved up to the next size of his parasite treatment; especially important as he explores the world by putting everything in his mouth!

Lomu has also taken up a top notch insurance policy through our partnership with PetProactive and found that his monthly cost was more than 20% cheaper than other leading brands! Of course the plan is to not need the insurance but you never know what injuries a puppy can surprise you with!

Both our Complete Care Club and Pet Proactive insurance offer you the best way to protect your pet and have complete peace of mind. Learn more about Pet Proactive at https://buff.ly/3wKb0ed

Here is the wonderful Oscar, a cheeky terrier who visits us frequently.

He stayed with us for the day so that we could remove a few new lumps that he had grown and also fully examine his mouth. Oscar has had quite a few problems in the past and even had spinal surgery a few years ago so he needs careful nursing to make sure he is as comfortable as possible. Here is he relaxing in our sunny garden after his procedure. We’re pleased to say that he has made a full recovery and all the lumps were benign which is excellent news!

Yesterday we held our regular journal club where we delve into the latest evidence-based developments in veterinary science. Fish and chips also featured! 😋🍟

This practice ensures that we stay at the forefront of our field and can provide the most up-to-date advice for our patients.

We reviewed our CPR protocols and practiced our skills. Although a serious topic, we had some fun showing off our skills to a variety of songs with a 120bpm rhythm!

The handsome William (who has a brother called Harry!) recently spent the day with us. William underwent surgery to remove a troublesomely large lump from his back. He is very friendly and enjoyed cuddles with our team after his procedure.

We're thrilled to report that William's surgery went very well. He's currently recovering comfortably at home under his owner's watchful eye. William's post-operative care included pain relief and close monitoring to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.

04/07/2024

For many pet owners, navigating their pet’s diabetes diagnosis can be a daunting task. Blood glucose monitoring is crucial for effective management, but traditional blood sample pricks can be stressful for both pets and owners. This post explores our experience with the Freestyle Libre sensor, a revolutionary tool for monitoring blood sugar in diabetic dogs and cat, as implemented with our beloved Phoebe here.

The freestyle Libre is an innovative device, a small sensor placed on the skin which has a tiny painless needle that sits under the skin and measured the body’s glucose levels. With a quick scan using a smartphone we can obtain real-time blood sugar levels without the need for needle pricks or blood tests.

The Freestyle Libre sensor has been a transformative tool in managing diabetes. It has empowered us to provide patients with more effective care while reducing stress for both owner and patient.

This handsome fellow, Hector, brightened our day with his visit! Hector, like many cats, experiences osteoarthritis which can make everyday activities like jumping and playing painful. 😻 💜

At Beacon View we're excited about the positive impact that Solensia can have on feline osteoarthritis. This once-monthly injection helps manage pain, allowing cats like Hector to regain their mobility and playful spirit.

We've seen a significant improvement in Hector's movement since starting Solensia. Could Solensia benefit your cat too? Ask us about Solensia during your next appointment and see if it's the right option for your feline friend.

Look how big Maximus has gotten! Here he is cuddling with Megan at his recent growth check appointment.

This visit wasn't just for cuddles (though those are important too!). Puppy growth assessments are crucial for your pup's health. These assessments offer an invaluable chance for our clinical team to closely monitor your pup's development and growth, encompassing vital metrics such as weight, body condition, and overall physical health.

These visits are also a great way for Maximus to get used to the vet clinic and build trust with our friendly staff. This makes future visits less stressful for him and helps prevent potential behavioural problems down the road.
