Don't underestimate the power of habituation in your dog's learning and training.

Habituation is the process of developing a neutral response to something through repeated exposure with a neutral outcome (I.e nothing particularly good or bad happens, consistently).

For this reason, habitutation only occurs for neutral or non-threatening things, because the repeated exposure to something scary or overwhelming will create sensitisation and compound their fear/overwhelm.

Habituation should feel low key and relaxed, like hanging out with your dog whilst stuff goes on around you, not necessarily engaging, just 'being together'. You might need them on a lead to do this at first, and some dogs need to become habotuated to being still and hanging out with you before we start adding any actual distractions in!

The reason i love habituation is because I think understanding that 'not everything is a party' is a crucial skill for pet dogs these days, and, whilst it's always better to err on the side of making things positive, sometimes having no reaction is the best way to socialise them!

What do you think? 💬

**When you use food or other reinforcers in the process, this is called 'counter conditioning', which is changing an emotional response from negative to positive by pairing the stimulus with a positive outcome. I always try to encourage people to progress from counter conditioning to habituation when their dog is feeling good about the things around them, so that the neutral response can build from a happy place.

BUFFALO ROLLS

My go-to chew when Erns is bored but I want to [insert self care activity here]. Usually drinking tea curled up on the sofa, playing video games or chatting with mates.

Did you know that chewing is a daily need for dogs?

A chew this big takes Ernie a good 30+mins to chew which is a perfect amount of time to flood that noggin with melatonin and he is usually asleep 5 minutes later.

Top tips:
Get a towel if your dog is a dribbler!
Light a candle if you don't like the smell
Stock up so you have them when you need them!

You can buy these at our shop (link in bio).

As our name would suggest, we're passionate about the happiness of dogs. Through our studies and years in the field one thing that is consistently true - when a dogs need are met, they're more successful as pets.

Dogs are the most adaptable, cooperative and joy seeking species on the planet. Their capable of living anywhere - from handbags to warzones. They can master complex jobs, in challenging circumstances and they'll tolerate an incredible amount of difficulty as the non-conflicting, soft, sweet creatures they are.

In recent years we've seen a increase in behavioural struggles that limit a dogs freedoms. While there's a myriad of contributing factors to this, and every dog is a unique individual, one over arching theme has a really significant impact.

The humanisation of dogs, and the things humans do in the name of 'good behaviour' are, without doubt, leading to many dogs down fall. From tiny Chihuahua, to the machine Malinois, our dogs, are at their core - dogs. They have the needs of a dog. They're living the life of a dog - or at least trying to. When we understand them as a species, and then as an individual we strip away the furbaby label and focus on providing them the life they want - and need.

Raising a successful dog starts with meeting ALL their basic needs. Only when this is a priority can we, fairly, ask them to start doing the stuff _we want._ Dogs who are fulfilled are able to be adaptable. Their able to learn all manner of complex and amazing things. They are, quite literally, super-beings. Without need meeting we can find ourselves plugging holes and band-aiding. Endless training drills, exposure and stress. Whereas, when we step back and look to make their lives *happier* (not just focus on what we want/ want to stop) we have the ability to make long-lasting change and transformation!

Like many terms in the dog world Enrichment is often misunderstood as an optional extra. Something 'good' dog owners add in. We are passionate that ALL dogs should have the chance to live as who they really are!
