What is too hot to walk my dog?

There are varying factors to this answer and many things need to be taken into consideration. For example;

Which breed of dog are you walking?

Brachycephalic breeds such as Pugs, French Bulldogs and Boxers may suffer from respiratory issues due to their shortened airways which restrict airflow, increasing their susceptibility to overheat and suffer heatstroke compared to other breeds.

Dogs that are overweight are at a higher risk of heat related issue as are dogs with health issues.

Elderly dogs and very young puppies may have trouble regulating their temperature so are also more at risk.

Where are you walking your dog?

Ideally you would walk your dog in a shaded area, or on grass rather than tarmac as tarmac can get much hotter. Do you have access to water for your dog to cool off?

If you drove to your walking location is your car parked in the shade as returning to a hot car after a walk in warm weather can be potentially very dangerous.

How are you walking your dog?

High energy and young dogs are more likely to overexert themselves. Controlling and limiting the amount of energy and exercise by placing them on a lead and not throwing a ball in hot weather is advised.

Finally…

When deciding if you should walk your dog in hot weather, know your dogs limits and apply common sense. Remember, just because your dog is loving running after a ball in the hot weather doesn’t mean it’s good for it. If you have a toddler and gave it sweets to eat all day, I’m sure they would be happy but it isn’t the right thing to do. If you are unsure, treat them like a toddler and make decisions for them. It’s up to us as owners to keep them safe.
