A way of living with a dog
I have always been interested in animal behaviour: how they live and what they think about the world. In my own life I would watch my dogs, wanting to understand them....wondering what they were thinking - do you ever do this?
In 2006, I began to formally study dog behaviour and became aware of how dogs communicate through body language: since then I haven’t stopped learning. My dog is my friend - it wouldn’t be much of a friendship if it was only seen on my terms. Being able to have an idea of what your dogs want, what they like and don’t like is the way to a better relationship. I can help you achieve this.
At the moment I live with Tess, and a few months after she first came to live with me, I started taking her to dog training classes. She did well, she was very motivated by food and a quick learner: her recall was impressive, she could turn in mid-flight and race back to me. That was useful, I won’t deny that, and I got some pleasure at her speed in picking things up but I wasn’t interested in most of what we did. It may seem odd but I remember the day when, instead of instant obedience, she looked at me when I called, turned back to what she was watching and, after a few seconds, came back to me....Yes!!! She was making a decision: it was a conscious choice, nothing automatic about it.
If that’s what you want from your dog: a dog who can think, who can make good decisions, who has skills, then it has to start with understanding them. Of course we have to care for them, to look after their needs and they live in our human world which isn’t always safe or easy for them - they need boundaries and teaching, some more than others.
