Independance: the state of wanting or being able to do things for yourself and make your own decisions, without help or influence from other people.
This is the Oxford Dictionary's definition of independance.
As horse owners, we want our horses to be able to make decisions by themselves, based on what we have taught them as well as their owns instincts. We want them to be able to think their way out of a situation and to be confident in just being.
A lot of that comes from Trust in their owners.
Happy Independance Day!

If your horse knows how to do something right, never accept the wrong answer. Give him the chance to find the right one. Commitment to consistency is crucial. Trust stands on a foundation of commitment and reliability, proving to your horse that he can always count on you. And don' forget to praise him - a gentle rub or scratch or time to chill, get to know what you horse enjoys too.

Once your horse learns the response you require from an ask, never let him finish with the wrong response. Consistency in expecting the correct response builds trust. Horses who don't consistently give the answer you seek often do so because consistency wasn’t maintained during training.

Be a student of equine body language and behaviour. Unless you know how your horse is feeling, you can’t offer what he needs. Horses who develop perfect movements are taught to perform correctly every time, even when leading from the field. Every interaction with your horse is a lesson. When your horse doesn’t get it right, help him find the correct answer.

To get our horses to do something quickly is in our nature, but push a horse to do what he can’t and you erode trust. Nothing zeroes out your trust bank account faster than punishing a horse who is making an honest effort. Failing to concentrate on the nuances of your horse’s behaviour and body language damages trust and hampers your relationship.
