Harvest Hype! C H A R D -
Rainbow Chard is a colourful and nutritious leafy green vegetable that we absolutely love 🌈🌈🌈
It grows very well on our farm - we plant it out in the fields over summer and inside our polytunnels throughout winter.
Cook it as you would spinach, and delight in the range of white, yellow, orange, pink and red stems.
It’s pretty tricky to find it in the supermarket or elsewhere, so let us fill your kitchen with colour!
Fresh, beautiful, organic vegetables bringing you joy every week…
We’re loving simple, quick recipes that really let our fresh produce shine! These aubergines, harvested just a few days ago on our organic farm, are so tasty when made with this miso glaze recipe by chef @cerijoneschef 🍆🍆🍆
Try it out and let us know what you think!
Miso aubergines
* 30ml brown or white miso paste
* 1 tsp maple syrup
* 1 tsp soy sauce
* 1/2 tsp sesame oil
* 1 small piece root ginger, peeled and grated
* 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
* 1 tsp sesame seeds
Quick pickled red onions
* 1 red onion
* 45ml red wine vinegar
* 1/2 tsp maple syrup
* 1/2 tsp salt
Method
1. Pre-heat your oven to 180C (fan)
2. First prepare your onions. Mix the sliced onion with the vinegar, maple syrup and salt and leave on the counter to pickle for at least 30 minutes. they’ll be ready when they’ve turned a vivid pink. If you don’t use them all, you can keep them submerged in the pickling juices in a jar for up to a week
3. Slice the aubergines in half lengthways and score the flesh in a diamond pattern, taking care not to cut through the skin. Line a baking sheet with greaseproof paper and lay the aubergines on top, cut sides up
4. Mix the miso, maple syrup, soy, sesame oil, ginger and garlic with a tablespoon or so of water to make a smooth paste. Brush the mixture over the aubergine flesh and roast for 20-25 minutes until golden brown on top and soft underneath. top with the sesame seeds, and drained pickled onions. Serve with rice and enjoy!

Harvesting Fresh Garlic -
Over the past few weeks we’ve been harvesting fresh garlic for our farm customers. This is garlic that has not quite fully formed yet, and can be cooked as you would use a leek or spring onions.
Trimming off the yellowing rusty bits, you can use the whole thing and eat it raw in salads, cooked in stir fries or as a garnish for soups.
From next week all our remaining garlic crop will be harvested and dried so that the bulbs last for months.
But for our customers unsure of what to do with it this week, check out What To Do With Fresh Garlic page on our Recipe Bank (link in bio).

Green Manure Serenity -
Here’s a little snapshot of farm life for your Tuesday evening.
The warm temperatures, sunshine and rain have meant our green manure fields are standing tall! And the bees are loving it 🐝🐝🐝
Green manures are plants that we grow to fix nutrients in the soil while allowing the land to have a rest.
We’ve got clovers, ryegrass, phacelia, buckwheat and all sorts growing - with the flowering components being highly attractive to insect populations.
Good for the soil, the bees, the veg and the people of our farm community 🥰
Swapping laptops for dibbers and wheelbarrows! 💻➡️🌱
This week and last, we hosted two Team Building Days and welcomed keen-bean office folk who traded their desk jobs for a day of green-thumbed adventures at the farm.
There was laughter and sweat in equal measure as they cleared kale crops, erected bean support structures, planted out beans, aubergines and courgettes, strung up tomato and cucumber plants, and potted up young plants.
Fueled by lunches of wood-fired pizza, fresh salads, seasonal soup and sourdough, our city slickers got fully immersed in the Sutton Community Farm life!
By the end of each day our teams had a newfound appreciation for the hard graft that goes into growing organic veggies. And they left feeling elated!

Compost Sieve -
A few weeks ago our fancy new compost sieve was put into action! This snazzy machine separates out big chunks of woodchip from our homemade compost, with the finer matter falling through.
The sieved stuff is ideal for acting as a medium for potted up plants - it’s brimming with nutrients that help young plants thrive.
Potting up plants means they’re more likely to reach full maturity quicker and healthier when they eventually make it into the ground.
Here you can see some young tomato plants graduating from seed trays to individual pots, which will be their new home for the next six weeks or so.
This new sieve machine is ace!! We’re been doing it by hand up until now, which takes a very very long time…
Plus our own compost is much richer in the good stuff, and more reliable than what we might buy from elsewhere. Our Growing Team is pretty chuffed…
