Good morning, just a little reminder to our Scottish friends. With the deadline for self exemption approaching at the end of July, please, please don't leave things till the last moment before you apply!
After the issues experienced in the UK where the system crashed multiple times over the last few days, people were left frantically trying to sort the issues and stress levels went through the roof...
We are also having issues where neutering deadlines are becoming an issue for lots of medical reasons, phantom pregnancy, unexpected seasons etc...
Again, a very stressful situation for owners and defra are holding firm at their stance on neutering.
Let's make sure those beloved pets are safe, so please don't delay, make your decision and get the medical procedure booked in asap if your dog isn't already neutered.

It maybe a beautiful day out there, but i am having a day in front of the computer, catching up on reports 😆
Have a lovely day folks 🩵

I am still working hard to answer all the messages folks are sending so i thank each of you for your patience, sometimes the process is made slower by people lying or trying to gain information for a third party 🤔
If i become suspicious of a person or an enquiry i will investigate it as fully as possible, its the ex cop in me i guess. In these days of social media we can fact check quite a lot from information in the public domain.
These chancers actually take valuable time away from helping those genuine owners desperate for help which in effect means you good people have a longer wait for a response from me.
Third party enquiries will be refused as information can become tainted or misleading, and none of us want the advice to be given out incorrectly. So minor rant over, i just wanted to explain the time delays in responding. I have just been away on holiday to recharge my batteries and was answering messages sat around the pool at times.
But i am back and straight into it...
Have a nice day 😊

If any of you try to get hold of me this week, i wont be contactable or have access to my messages, I'm having a few days riding motorcycles around the hills of Montenegro to clear my head 😊
Sorry for the inconvenience but feel free to leave messages and i will work through them on my return 👍
Thank you, Andy

It's been a while since i posted here due to a hectic workload, a mixture of people who exempted in the uk but now believe they rushed into it, and don't believe their dogs are of "type"
and members of the Scottish public that are looking for a steer as whether to exempt or not.
I would like to assure you that i am trying hard with colleagues to answer all messages and there is lots of stuff going on behind the scenes to try to make the best of a bad situation.
As well as tripping all over the country visiting dogs i was lucky enough to be invited to St Andrew's house in Edinburgh to speak personally with key stakeholders last week with a colleague.
So please, if you're awaiting a response from me, continue to be patient and i will get to you as soon as i can.

I am asked multiple times each day, what type of photos do i need to take a look at peoples best friends. As you can appreciate, i spend so long requesting the same information time after time. So i thought i would give people some guidance in what makes the best type of pictures to send me...
Although your cute pics of the dog dressed up, or distant photos of him/her playing with other dogs or family members maybe treasured by yourselves, they don't make a difficult job any easier 😉
Please take this in the spirit its intended 😊
I love seeing your dogs being dogs and living their best lives, but when i am so busy trying to make sure i reply to everyone, time is precious 💗

A question i am asked more than once a day is, "how do i remove my dog from the register of exempted dogs, is it something you can help with?"
Defra have not released the specific details of how this is going to be achieved yet, they are still finalising the exemptions they have registered, due to huge numbers of owners that took advantage of the exemption scheme.
Rest assured, as soon as we have details of how to remove dogs from the register that do not need to be on it, we will make this information available to everyone. 🫵

All of a sudden i am inundated with enquiries from Scotland, if you are awaiting a reply from me, please be patient as i am working through them all as quickly as i can, i will answer all of you, i promise. Thank you for your patience 🙏

It's been a privilege helping Swanspool clients with their decision making process over the past few months, with DEFRA not wanting vets to get involved in saying whether a dog is a banned type, i stepped in visiting clients who were passed my number from Swanspool, it has been a rewarding experience for all involved, and i got to meet some amazing dogs and owners. Thank you to all the staff at Swanspool vets.

Meet Bella 🎀

Bella is an absolutely beautiful XL Bully. She came in to us this week to be spayed as part of her exemption criteria. She was such a good girl and was rewarded with plenty of Schmacko's!

We understand that presently owning an XL Bully and the legislation surrounding ownership can be very confusing and worrying for some people. Andy at K9 BSL Check has lots of information and advice that he can provide, so please check out his page!

One interesting fact with the recent addition of the XL Bully to the banned breed listing, the exemption has brought a lot of unregistered Pit Bull terriers to notice.

Meet Ava, she is one of the dogs caught up in the recent addition of XL bully dogs to the banned breed list on the dangerous dogs act, Ava is not a full XL bully, but her height and physical make up put her into the category standard, that Defra state makes her a banned breed...
Ava is a total sweetheart of a dog, she lives with 3 other dogs who are not subject to the ban, she has a great family who have land so she can still be a dog.

It may help to save the post for future reference.

After a very busy few months working hard advising owners with the ammendment to the dangerous dogs act, i felt the time was right to reach out to those people struggling to identify, if their family canine member, was indeed a dog to which the term "banned breed" applies.
As a retired police DLO, (dog legislation officer) i have been qualified to be able to identify those "types" of dogs since 2012. These are turbulent times in terms of "dog legislation" and people are rightly concerned to be able to ensure they don't fall foul of the law.
