Let’s talk…. Grass seeds 🌾We are now firmly in grass seed season and while the average person doesn’t give it a second thought, dog owners/walkers should be on high alert at this time of year. They literally are one of the most harmful things to a dog but almost impossible to avoid. The ends are super sharp and can bury themselves into your dogs ears/eyes/nose and paws. If one is inhaled by your dog it can find its way into your dog’s lung or migrate to anywhere else in the body causing major infections. My client has a springer who has been off walks with her paw for 4 weeks. Numerous trips to the vet and most probably hundreds of pounds later and they have finally discovered it is a very large grass seed embedded in her paw. So embedded it requires surgery to remove it! Just today I have has to tweezer an imbedded grass seed out of Mavis’s belly. I can’t stress enough how important it is to check every inch of your dog after a walk through grass. Check inside and out of their ears, put your finger into the webbing of their paws and feel for sharp seeds. Stroke your hands all over their body constantly feeling around. If your dog develops a swollen paw or ear at this time of year always think grass seed first before you eliminate it and advise your vet that they have been through seeded grass if you cannot pick it out yourself. Groom your dog after each walk with a suitable brush to loosen the seeds or, like I sometime do if Mavis is bad, bath them, cover in shampoo and then brush them through while the shampoo is on as this makes them slip out easier. Yes it’s a faff but it could save your dog pain, hundreds of pounds or even your dogs life!

Treated the dogs to an hour in Ashbourne Dog Field for the first time this evening. All 3 of my dogs have completely different exercise needs and so I can’t walk them all together. Mavis can go for miles and is great off lead, Marley is really reactive toward other dogs so can’t take him off lead much and Oscar is 12, has dislocated knee caps and is very slow. This was the perfect place to not have to worry about any of those things. But the best thing was how well Mavis took to the agility! Wow she was amazing, we couldn’t believe it! Next stop Crufts!! I also think Maisie would make an excellent dog trainer! I can’t recommend this field enough 🐾🐶

So nice to see Mavis out with the troops again this morning. Reg has definitely missed her 🥰 Also thank you to everyone for the well wishes, texts asking how she is doing and also to Tilly’s mum for the flowers and treats for Mavis! I’m so overwhelmed with all the love for her. I’m happy to report she is getting back to her normal self but she will remain on a high dosage of steroids to prevent a relapse. I also want to re-iterate my thanks to Highfield Vets in Littleover for their speedy diagnosis, which no doubt saved her life last Saturday. I changed vets about a week before Mavis came down with meningitis as I wasn’t happy with the way they dealt with my daughter’s dog. I genuinely believe if I hadn’t done this Mavis wouldn’t be with me today. I have had so many people say they didn’t know dogs could get meningitis, neither did I, so it’s important to know the symptoms. Mavis first went off her food then became very sleepy. Also when she licked me her tongue was hot and so could tell she had a temperature. Neck and back pain is also a symptom although I didn’t see this in Mavis. After a few days like this (I thought she was just coming into her first season) she got really lethargic, floppy and was staggering around when trying to walk. After reading up and visiting forums on dog meningitis (SRMA) it became apparent that it’s usually missed on the first few consultations as it’s quite rare. Credit to my Amazing Vet, Lucy, for picking up on this on the first visit. If you are not happy with your vet for whatever reason I would implore you to get either a second opinion or change vets. Nobody knows your dog like you 🐾🐶

Just a reminder to my clients, if it is too hot to walk your dogs this week I will automatically swap to a home visit. I will assess at the time of the walk whether I deem it too hot using the guidelines from the RSPCA.

Mavis has a new duck for being a brave girl. It is called Lucy after the vet who saved her and has a poorly wing, so Mavis has given her the red bandage that was on her leg where the IV went in 🥰💞

Probably one of the worst days of my life. I had to rush my beautiful Mavis to the vets in Derby because she became so lethargic and wouldn’t eat. I left it for a few days thinking she was coming into season. This morning she went downhill rapidly. They put her on a drip to bring her raging temperature down and ran tests. Turns out she has SRMA, which is basically meningitis in dogs. I sat sobbing in the vets and literally prayed to God that she would be ok. I begged them to help her. She is home now and on a very high dose of steroids and pain killers. I just want to say Highfields Vets in Derby were amazing. They couldn’t have done more for her and stayed open past their time to help her. They really were Mavis’s guardian angels. If I had lost her my world would have been over. Hug your doggies a little bit tighter tonight people as you never know what may happen tomorrow 😔😢🐶💞

Today was my last walk with Rupert for 3 months while he goes travelling with his mummy and daddy. To say I’m going to miss him is an understatement. He is always so happy, bouncy and full of joy, he brightens my day no matter what mood I’m in.
Bon voyage my little tigger, I’ll see you in November 😘🥰

Let’s talk sprats. Dogs love em, they are a healthy snack full of all the omegas and can be used as treats or added to meals. 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟

Look at this gorgeous dog walking bag I’ve had made. It has little Mavis’s on it!!! My daughter has also had one made for her dog and even had his name on it. If you are looking for a dog walking bag with all the pockets/poo bag dispenser and phone pockets then have a look on Sarah Jane’s Dog Walking Bags. A small business who is definitely worth supporting!! The service and quality is second to none! Early forgot to mention it’s also waterproof 💦
