As the UK enters a four-day hot weather warning, here’s a guide on when you should and shouldn’t walk your dog in the heat.

Remember, a dog has never died from skipping a walk, but dogs have died from heat stroke.

How is your dog coping with the heat?

We have never posted about this before but the recent warm & wet weather has reminded us to raise some awareness of the fact that it’s now tick season. We’ve all been waiting for summer to arrive, but with it comes an increase in critters, including ticks unfortunately.
Ticks aren’t particularly harmful to animals generally but they are harmful to humans. They can cause Lyme disease which can have long term life altering effects so being tick aware and knowing how to find and remove them is important.

1) USE FLEA & TICK treatment on your pets regularly over summer months!

2) Ticks can’t jump but rather attach themselves when something brushes past. CHECK ALL OVER yours and your pets body after spending time outdoors. Especially in crevices like the paws/feet, groin, armpits, around the neck and inside the ears.

3) Know how to remove them. You should use a tick remover or tweezers to grip and twist the tick off, swiftly if possible and trying not to leave behind the head.

4) Avoid long grass, stick to paths where possible. Wear long / light clothing and check yourself after each time outdoors. Take a shower and put clothing in the dyer or on a hot wash. Remember ticks can be very small & sometimes even look like a freckle or mole.

5) Be aware of children crawling on the ground outdoors or on carpets indoors if your pet has had ticks.

6) Do you own research too. The more information you know about ticks and Lyme disease, the better your awareness of these things.

From day one we’ve always given our pooches paws a proper washing down between the toes after each walk. It’s important to make sure dogs paws are clean after muddy walks to avoid any risk of Alabama rot. We learned this when we did our doggy first aid course ⛑️ .
Of course, this means we have to take the time at the end of each walk to do it.
Most passers by will admire how good the dogs are and the equipment we use commenting on how ‘nifty’ it is.
Sadly however we have also had people respond negatively to having to wait for while we finish up, or even shout horrible abuse🤷‍♀️
We will never apologise for taking proper care of our pooches. At end of the day, they are our number 1 care, concern and priority!
So make sure after taking your own dog for a walk that you also clean off those paws 🐾 & keep an eye out for any signs of this nasty disease.

As the seasons change, so does the risk of Alabama rot, a serious but rare disease affecting dogs, causing skin and kidney damage. As we enter its most prevalent months, it's crucial to recognise the signs: skin sores, fatigue, loss of appetite, and vomiting. 🍂🐕

Awareness and quick action are vital for your dog's health. Keep them clean, especially after muddy adventures, and always consult your vet if you spot any symptoms.

Be sure to share with your friends who have dogs to help spread awareness.
