Recent data from the Dogs Trust's Stray Dog Survey indicates that approximately 35,078 stray dogs were handled by local authority dog wardens last year. While around 43 percent of these dogs were eventually reunited with their owners, 26 percent could not be reunited due to incorrect or outdated information in their microchips.

Meet Missy, a curious kitty who decided to go on an unexpected and longer-than-usual, venture. 🐱 After a few days of searching, her worried family was starting to lose hope – until a neighbour found her with an injured paw and took her to the vet.

Luckily, Missy’s microchip was up to date, and the vet could contact her family right away! 🙌💖 Just a few hours later, Bella was back in her favourite spot on the sofa, safe and sound! 🏡✨

🌺 Honoring All Heroes This Remembrance Day, Including Our Brave Animals 🌺

As we reflect on Remembrance Day which is round the corner, let’s also honor the incredible animals who have served alongside our soldiers. One such hero is Lucca, a retired Marine Corps military working dog.

This courageous half-German shepherd, half-Belgian Malinois, saved countless lives by detecting nearly 40 explosive devices during her service. In Afghanistan, while leading Marines off-leash, Lucca located another IED — but a second, hidden blast detonated. Her handler, Cpl. Juan Rodriguez, rushed to her aid, applying a tourniquet and carrying her to safety, demonstrating the unbreakable bond between handler and dog. Thanks to his swift action, Lucca survived. 🐕‍🦺❤️

On this Remembrance Day, let’s remember the brave soldiers and the loyal animals like Lucca who have given so much in service. 🌟

Did you know that it’s a legal requirement for pet owners to get their dogs microchipped by eight weeks old, and cats by 20 weeks?

A microchip is a tiny device, approximately the size of a grain of rice, which is implanted under the skin of an animal. In the event an animal is lost or suspected to be stolen, the chip can be scanned by a vet, council, or welfare or government organisation, and the owner’s details retrieved.

Last week, we held a small microchipping clinic at Blackdown House, where five cats and one dog were implanted with a microchip. The clinic was set up so that two members of our Environmental Health team could complete their Peddymark / Animal Tracker (which is a certified trainer for the implantation of microchips) assessments, therefore becoming fully qualified to carry out the process in future.

We received great feedback from the animals’ owners and hope to run more pop-up clinics across East Devon soon. Keep an eye on this page and our website for more details.

If you’ve come across a stray dog and haven’t been able to contact the keeper, don’t worry—help is at hand! 🐾

1️⃣ Stay Safe: Approach the dog carefully, and ensure it's safe from traffic and other dangers.

2️⃣ Check for Identification: Look for tags or a microchip to contact the keeper directly.

3️⃣ Report to the Council: If you can’t reach the keeper, report the stray dog to your local council. They’re responsible for handling stray dogs and can help get the dog back home safely.
