What do we believe in, as a small animal rescue? 🐹🐰

✅ We always home check to ensure our animals are going into safe homes. 🏠❤️

✅ Adopters must meet or exceed welfare requirements, which we make clear through our website and further information pages.

✅ We are against the breeding and selling animals.

✅ Social animals are happily bonded with suitable companions, especially in rabbits and guinea pigs. 🐹❤️🐹

✅ We have a no-kill policy, we won’t ever put down healthy animals. ❌

✅ We do not receive money from pet retailers and rely entirely on public donations. (For more information on getting involved with us at CARE and ways to support our rescue through donations, please visit our website or follow us on social media).

✅🐰 All rabbits are neutered and fully vaccinated prior to adoption.

✅ Finally, we pair our animals up with their perfect forever homes and pride ourselves on having extremely high welfare expectations.

😊💛 We want only the absolute best for our furry friends and we hope we can help spread correct welfare information to others!

Hey! Our two little guinea pigs, Bullseye and Frank, are looking for their perfect family and a forever home! 🏡❤️

These two are a sweet, bonded pair of piggies with unique personalities and awesome hairdos to match! They are both males, aged 2 and 4. 🐹🐹

Their personalities shine!✨
Bullseye will always run to greet you and will gladly receive lots of head scratches. He’s a bossy guinea pig and likes to keep Frank in check! Frank is a nervous wee chap who is very good with hand-feeding and loves a wee cuddle on your lap once he gains your trust.

Food-lovers! 🥦
They absolutely love their scran (as seen in this lovely summer pic!) and their appetite knows no bounds 🥬😍. Like most piggies they’re not fond of being picked up but a tasty peace offering will have them loving on you in no time. 🤗

🏠✅ They will need a cosy indoor home with plenty of space for their wild zoomies and popcorns.

If you’re interested in adopting these two little guys, we are happy to advise on cages, diet, enrichment and just about anything else before you dive into buying new things for your guinea pigs. Even if you have kept guinea pigs for years prior, please do take the time to have a read through our guinea pig care information page on our website as welfare recommendations often change with new research. 💻📈

📲 Keep a look out for new social media posts about guinea pigs in future as well!

Did you know that rodents have ‘open-rooted dentition’ which means their teeth never stop growing? Rodent welfare is made up of many important factors, and dental care is definitely one of them! 🦷🪥

All rodents, including those we care for such as hamsters, rats, and guinea pigs, have incisors (front teeth) that continuously grow and curve throughout their lifetime, which if kept uncared for can become dangerous and cause further pain. 😣

So whilst their teeth keep growing, rodents have a specialised ‘self-sharpening’ system where they grind their incisors against each other, wearing them down to a healthy length and size. 🦷😁

This upkeep of tooth length can be further assisted by giving your pets safe things to gnaw on, such as wooden items or toys, suitable foods, fruit branches, pellets, or other similar objects to keep their teeth short.

🐰🦷 As a reminder, whilst they aren’t rodents, rabbits’ teeth continuously grow too! Their teeth can grow up to as much as 12cm every year and require a large amount of gnawing and chewing to reduce them in size yearly. If a rabbit’s teeth are not kept at an appropriate length by the natural act of chewing, they will most likely become overgrown and will cause further health problems as time progresses.

📧ℹ️ You can find further information and more details on rodent and rabbit welfare through our website (collectiveanimalrescue.co.uk). Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any other questions! 😊

🐰 Rabbits are very smart animals who need to be kept busy with natural behaviours! You’ll need time and creativity to keep them occupied with activities, challenges and tasks.

This doesn’t need to include expensive shop-bought toys as there are so many things we can do with simple household items or with little spending.

Giving your rabbits enrichment opportunities improves the quality of their living areas and gives them a greater choice of activities to choose from everyday! 😍

Below are some common ideas!

- Creating a digging box within their enclosure (this could be a large plant pot with earth or cardboard boxes with shredded paper) 📦🧻
- Forage boxes
- Branches and wooden chews to play with 🪵🌲
- Creating tunnels large enough for them to run through (large enough for them to fit more than comfortably)
- Teaching them tricks and commands 🐇
- Creating food challenges using dog logic toys you can find in most shops 🦴🌾
- Creating a hiding place for rabbits to rest together (but make sure to have an entrance and an exit!)
- Changing their enclosure layout regularly so they can explore their new environment 🏠

Just remember to always make sure there are no small parts that your rabbit could swallow and get injured by, and that all materials are non-toxic. ✅

Hello everyone! We are having a storage clear out as we tend to gather lots and lots of extra enclosures and equipment over the years.

We have x3 of these Dwarf/Robo Hamster enclosures looking for a new home. They’re 80x50cm and really good quality.

We also have x3 wheels, one for dwarf breeds (20cm) and two suitable for Syrian hamsters (28cm).

Happy to give them away for free to new homes, but a small donation in aid of the rescue would be nice 😇 Collection from Lothian Road in the next day or two is required.

Hey! Want to give your hamster the best environment and enrichment possible? 🐹😍
Below we have shared our best tips to achieve both!

1. Ensure the area is well-ventilated 💨, dry and away from direct heat sources (such as radiators or sunny windows) and draughts 🌞❌. (Room temperatures of 17-20°C are ideal!) This is especially important now over summer when temperatures rise during the day! 🌴

2. Your hamsters need a wheel! 🛞🐹 Wheels should be at least 20cm for Dwarf breed hamsters, and at least 28cm for Syrian breed hamsters. The more space you give them to exercise and play, the better it is for them. We have many posts on our social media outlining some great wheel examples for your hamsters if you’re looking to buy a new one! 😊

3. Your hamster will love to burrow! So use paper, h**p, or teabag based bedding such as ‘Back to Nature’ with depth to allow them to do so. This should be throughout their entire cage and available at all times! 🧻☕️

4. Avoid wood shavings within their enclosure as they are linked to respiratory issues, liver damage, and skin irritation.

5. Hamsters like to play and we should make sure they can do so. 🛝 Giving them tunnels, hides, and untreated wooden toys 🪵to chew are a few good examples of things we can add to their environment.

6. Introducing a secure play pen with a new area to explore is a great way to aid in this as it stimulates their natural need to explore 🗺️.

7. We must also understand that enrichment toys, such as exercise balls ⚽️, can cause increased stress levels and aren’t fun for them.

8. Make sure to clean their accommodation regularly (for example once a week) to ensure good and safe living conditions. 🧼🧽

9. A sand bath should be provided in the cage at all times, to allow them to roll in it and absorb oils from their coats. 🏖️🛁

🩺❤️ As a small animal rescue, it is an important reminder to share that our animals are considered exotic! Whilst most vets are curated to treat animals such as dogs and cats, having a specialist vet for any treatment that our pets may need over the course of their lives is crucial. 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️✅

Non-exotic specialist vets are simply not knowledgeable enough to treat more unusual pets such as rabbits or gerbils.

If you’re in Edinburgh, this will most likely mean taking them to The Dick Vet’s Hospital for Small Animals who are specialised in the care of exotic pets. 🏥🐰

🚨Attention pet parents! Say No to Muesli for Guinea Pigs and Rabbits! 🚫🐰

It is important to understand why Muesli mixes are not suitable for their consumption and digestion:

1. 🍬Hidden Sugars: Muesli mixes often contain high amount of sugar that can lead to obesity and dental problems in rabbits and guinea pigs. 🦷

2. 🤢 Selective Eating: The range of these mixes allow your pets to pick out their favourite bits, leaving behind essential nutrients needed. This can lead to an unbalanced diet and a dislike towards the most important minerals. 🥦

3. 😞🤮Digestive Issues: Muesli’s high carbohydrate content can cause digestive upset and diarrhea in rabbits and guinea pigs. 💩

4. ❌ 🩺Health Hazards: Studies have shown that muesli-style diets can lead to a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, and other health issues amongst your fur babies.

🤗So what can you do instead? Opt for pellets and ‘unlimited’ high-quality hay: these options will provide your pets with the essential nutrients they need for a healthy life! As further nutrition, giving your pets fresh greens and herbs 🌿 for rabbits and Vitamin-C rich vegetables 🥦 for guinea pigs is best for their health!

Hi all! We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of our purpose as an ethical animal rescue. 🐹✅

We believe that our animals’ pasts cannot be changed, but that we can rewrite their future and provide them with homes and the necessities they require to live happily and healthy. 😊

At CARE, we promote high welfare standards and strive to increase understanding for all small companion animals, which we show on our website and social medias. 📱💻

Want to get involved with us? 🤗
There are many so many ways in which you can become a part of CARE:

🧡Fostering: We rely on our team of fosterers and drivers to take care of unwanted and abandoned animals. As a rescue, we provide our volunteer team with 27/7 support and guidance, cages and equipment, the costs of vets bills, and help with transport when needed. Fostering provides a home for animals in desperate need of love and attention.

🧡Fundraising and Donating: We rely on donations and fundraising to keep our important animal rescue work going! As a non-profit, volunteer-ran rescue, 100% of money raised goes towards our running costs, such as some of the services we provide above.

🧡Adopting: There is still a big misconception that animals in rescues have something ‘wrong’ with them, but this is not the case at all! Many animals in rescues are there through no fault of their own, such as children losing interest or owners having to move away for work.

🧡Keeping up to date with our social media: we post content weekly, providing helpful information on how to properly care for animals and raise awareness for their welfare. We also strive to create a community of those who share our same values, so keeping up with what we do is a great way to become a part of a larger community!

📧ℹ️ You can find further information and more details on how to get involved with us through our website (collectiveanimalrescue.co.uk). Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any other questions!

Fruit and veggies for your Guinea Pig! 🥦🍅🫑

Whilst we know that good-quality hay should make up most of your guinea pigs’ diet 🌾, they should also have fresh, washed leafy greens or weeds each day, such as kale or broccoli, which are excellent sources of Vitamin C and great for their health 😍. Guinea pigs don’t naturally eat fruit or root vegetables, but you can give them in small amounts as treats, such as small pieces of carrot or an apple quarter. ✅

Like in this photo, cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes are nice treat options they enjoy! Just remember to not feed them citrus fruits and always remember that certain plants are not suitable for a guinea pig diet and can be poisonous for them.

Happy eating! 😊🐹

Hay! Hay! Hay! 🌾

Hay is very important for many small animals, including rabbits and guinea pigs. Here at CARE, we believe in the best welfare for our animals and supplying them with the right kind and quantity of hay is a priority. ❤️

🐰 : Whilst this is often depicted, hay is not just bedding for rabbits. It is actually their main source of food and nutrition, so it should be available at all times. Having fresh, clean, and dust-free hay within their enclosures allows for natural foraging and grazing, enrichment opportunities, and since their teeth continuously grow, it allows for rabbits to naturally wear their teeth down to shape and avoid tooth disease. As a general rule, rabbits should be eating at least the size of their body in hay every day, or ideally more!

🐹 : Good-quality, ‘unlimited’ hay should make up most of your guinea pigs' diet, which means they should always have it readily available in their enclosure. Having access to it daily means they can graze and mimic natural behaviours within their homes. It is important to note that guinea pigs need hay for their digestive systems and natural bodily functions, such as their teeth, to function properly. Like rabbits, as their teeth continuously grow, hay is a great way for them to wear down their teeth, keeping them at the correct length.

Let’s talk about rabbit health! 🐰🩺

There are multiple aspects of rabbit health that should be covered when spreading awareness:

🩺 Proper veterinary care: Rabbits are exotic animals and will need a specialist vet for any treatment that may need over the course of their lives.

📍If you’re in Edinburgh, this will most likely mean taking them to The Dick Vet’s Hospital for Small Animals, who are specialised in rabbit care. Non-exotic specialist vets are simply not knowledgeable enough to treat more unusual pets.

🌾🥦 Diet: You will need to do some research before taking on rabbits, especially when it comes to their daily diet. A rabbit’s basic diet is made up of these elements:

- A good varied grain based Unlimited high quality feeding hay, as they should be eating at least the size of their body in hay every day, or ideally more! This should be available to them at all times! 🌾🌾
- A healthy range of rabbit safe herbs, greens and forage. Fruit and vegetables are a nice occasional treat a few times per week, but try to vary them as possible.
- An egg-cup size portion of quality, high fibre, rabbit nuggets per day. Do not feed muesli style mixes as these are linked to obesity and dental problems. ❌
- Always ensure water is readily available for your rabbits; those who consume more hay will also drink more water! It is so important for their vitals! 💧

Enrichment for your rabbits! 🐰🧩

Rabbits are very intelligent animals who need to be kept busy with natural behaviours! 😍🐇

Because of this, you’ll need time and creativity to keep them occupied with activities, challenges and tasks that can be as simple or as complex as you like. This doesn’t need to include expensive shop bought toys as there is so much you can make with very simple household items that will aid in your rabbit’s enrichment. 🛝👾

Interesting environments that encourage physical and mental stimulation will create a happy home. 🏠❤️

Here are some common ideas:

- Creating a digging or foraging box 📦🎁
- Changing their enclosure layout regularly
- Creating large cardboard tunnels for them to explore through
- Branches and wooden chews for them to nibble on 🪵
- Teaching them tricks and commands
- Creating food challenges using dog logic toys 🦴🐾🍎

26/06/2024

Let’s talk about companionship! 🐰🐰❤️

A lone rabbit isn’t a thriving rabbit. Same species companionship for rabbits is very important, so they shouldn’t be kept alone. Studies have shown they value companionship nearly as highly as water and food! So if we wouldn’t keep them away from food, why do the same for their company? 🥹

If they have at least one bonded partner, then they will never be alone; as humans we will never be able to make up for another bunny friend.

Bonding is very important for two rabbits though, as they can really thrive in pairs or even groups as long as care is taken when bonding. We are more than happy to advise on bonding and guide you through the process. ✅

Always remember to never put two unneutered rabbits together, as both need to be de-sexed several weeks before their introductions. 👍🏻

ℹ️ For more information check out our website: https://collectiveanimalrescue.co.uk/rabbit-resources/ or visit the Rabbit Awareness Action Group (RAAG) who organise these annual awareness weeks 🥰 https://rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk
