⁉️ Mixed up concerns about Cedarwood...

Every so often, things blow up online in guinea pig Forums / on Facebook etc. Cedarwood is a regular topic that people get heated about when it comes to guinea pigs.

This wheek in the UK, temperatures are soaring again...up to 30c in Berkshire.🥵

Here is a useful reminder of how to keep your guineas safe from our friends over at Tiny Paws Cambs - Home of The Guinea Pig Groomer.

We are formally issuing a red alert to the UKs guinea pigs (and rabbits) in light of the temperatures forecast for the coming week.

Guinea pigs physiologically cannot sweat or pant. They do not have the ability to cool themselves down when they get too hot. They are exceptionally vulnerable to heatstroke - especially our UK piggies who are not at all used to temperatures in the high 20s and 30s. Therefore it is YOUR responsibility to make their environment as cool and comfortable as possible. Prevention is far easier, better - and cheaper - than a cure.

Starting by bringing them into a fully sheltered area, in the shade or a darkened room, well away from direct sunlight. Hutches in direct sunlight, whether wooden or plastic, heat up to as much as 20⁰ HIGHER than the ambient air temperature outside. That means this week, hutched pets will be suffering with temperatures in the region of 50⁰c if you do not take action to protect them.

We all know that dogs die in hot cars.

Well, guinea pigs and rabbits die in hot hutches. And most of them live in them nearly 24/7.

Be responsible. They're never "just" that pet that you keep outside in the garden. They are lives that you hold in your hands.

With the long Easter weekend coming up here in the UK, Veterinary Surgeries and some shops / suppliers will be closed for part of the time. It is always worth doing a quick check to ensure that you have enough of what you need to keep your guineas happy for the next few days.💜

○ When your usual Veterinary Surgery is closed, do you know where to call if your guineas gets sick? Most surgeries either provide their own out-of-hours service, or are linked to an out-of-hours service provider.

○ If your guinea is on medication, do you have enough to see you through the weekend?

○ Do you have enough hay, fresh / dry food and bedding to keep you going?

Royal Mail are now recommending earlier posting dates:
* UK 2nd Class items posted by Monday 12th December
* UK 1st Class items posted by Friday 16th December

For orders outside the UK, please order as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Last recommended ordering dates for delivery by Christmas 2022:

Here in the UK we are now well into autumn.🍂 Temperatures are dropping quickly at night, so it is really important to ensure that your guineas are being kept warm enough. They originate from a warm, temperate climate and temperatures below 15C can be detrimental to their health.

If your guineas are outdoors, do you know what temperature it is inside their hutch? Digital Indoor / Outdoor Thermometers are available on eBay, and can help you to monitor variations in temperature.

Snugglesafe Heat Pads are always useful to have to keep your guineas warm.

What are you doing to ensure that your guineas are being protected from the elements this autumn / winter?
