🐐 Before you breed your animals, you need to know- what offspring are wanting from the mating? Is it a certain wool-type? Or relations to a title-winning animal due to its trial winning ability? What about a certain coat colour and pattern?

Having access to multiple generations of information helps you decide if the traits you’ve selected are dominant in the animals pedigree. The more pedigree certificates you can look at and choose from, the more chance you have of meeting your breeding objective.

An in-depth pedigree certificate will allow you to show off your breeding selection choices and the results of your hard work. Having evidence of this will allow you to charge the appropriate amount for your animals offspring.

Having the evidence of your animals breeding shows what their potential is in relation to their pedigree, something especially essential if you have a specific breeding objective.

When dealing with Rare Breed animals, keeping a wide gene pool is even more essential so only pedigree animals should be bred. This should be to work towards a common objective for the breed. If the pedigree isn’t known, there’s less chance it will be used for breeding which could mean it being sold for less.

The 'Certificate' tab in each Cloud Lines package is full interactive, allowing you to navigate through an animal's breeding history, add new pedigrees, and see snapshot information as you hover-over.

🧬 If you want your animals to really thrive, a wide and diverse gene pool is necessary. It is also important to make sure that the breeding pair you choose meets the breeding objective you desire. Without access to an animals genomes, pedigree recording is the only way to do this.

You could record on a spreadsheet or a notebook, OR you could let us do the handwork, and record on CloudLines 🧑‍💻

❓ How do I start adding data / pedigrees to my package?

There are 2 answers to this 1) You can use the self-service import tool or our in-house import service. 2) You can enter the pedigrees manually.

There is a specific FAQ entry for CSV import, so this answer focuses on scenario 2. Cloud-Lines has a couple of "foundation objects" which need to be configured before a pedigree is added. These are "Breed" and "Breeder", and are created by clicking on their named menu items at the top of the screen. At least 1 breed must be created for each account, and at least 1 breeder.

Some breeders/societies find it useful to include a "fake" breeder called something like "unknown" or perhaps "sold-outside-society" - this gives you some flexibility when adding pedigrees from unknown breeders, or pedigrees with an unknown "current owner". Once at least 1 breed and at least 1 breeder have been configured, you can begin manually adding pedigrees to your package. The Breeder(s) you have configured will be required for the 1st 2 fields in the general "new pedigree" form - "Breeder" and "Current Owner".

Working with the British Kunekune Pig Society we have been delighted to help them get even more detailed with their planned breeding 🐷

The society use our Kinship Tool which compares the ancestors of a Sire/ Dam for common ancestors right back to the start of the British Kunekune Society, and gives a figure to show the results. This can then be compared to thresholds set by the British Kunekune Society to see if the 2 animals are suitable for mating.

Our Cloud Lines system can look at the society's whole data, set going back to their original imported pigs, helping the society improve their genetic diversity to very high standards.
