Today’s dog is one of the breeds I adore and had the pleasure of spending lots of time with. In fact, I spent my childhood and teenage years with this breed type.
It’s the German Shepherd.
This wonderful breed was developed as a herder and guarder for sheep. They were bred for their intelligence, speed and durability alongside their awesome sense of smell to sniff out lurking predators.
Still very much a working dog today, the GSD has spread to many roles including service dog, police work, military and search and rescue.
This means the GSD does like a job to do, and they do quite often require kind guidance to do the right thing. Left to their own devices, they will herd and they will guard ANYTHING that moves!! 😉
I was lucky to have some awesome Germans Shepherds growing up.
Clyde was our childhood dog, and he was the most loyal companion a kid could ask for.
Then there was Asha, she was there through the highs and the lows of growing up from tween, teen to young adult me.
Not to mention many rescues.
One thing they ALL had in common…. high intelligence and awesome personalities.
So lets give a shout for the German Shepherd!!

Next on our countdown is the extremely speedy, the whizz dogs and the major couch potatoes od the dog world…
…yes it is the GREYHOUND!!!!
Aren’t they just a beautiful breed of dogs!!!
This big dog breed is a sighthound and was originally bred for the use of hunting and coursing. Their streamlined bodies makes them super-fast to chase prey animals in open grounds.
It was from this coursing that modern racing was created. This ‘sport’ involved the chasing of a dead animal around a man-made racetrack! This sport has posed many welfare concerns over the years!! Although banned in many countries, in the UK it remains legal.
Although a super-fast dog, like most mammals, they do aim to conserve their energy and love nothing more than a good chill out day in front of the cosy fire or under a duvet.
They do have a ‘killer’ prey drive on them so providing lots of chase drive stimulation can be helpful!!

Who says reactive dog training shouldn’t be fun?! 😝. This gorgeous whippet lacks a lot of confidence. At the sight of another dog he would be quite loud and stressy!! He is building more coping strategies and increasing his confidence each week!! 🔥. We had our awesome stooge dog help out at a bit of distance and he did awesome.
