🎯 Sometimes, the Best Training Is Taking a Break 🐾
Training isn’t always about doing more—it’s about knowing when to pause. Let’s explore how breaks can make a world of difference for you and your gundog!

💡 Why Taking a Break Is Beneficial:
✔️ Refuels Your Energy: Fresh minds and enthusiasm for both of you.
✔️ Strengthens Connection: Build trust and understanding through unstructured time together.
✔️ Prevents Burnout: Avoid frustration and fatigue for a more balanced experience.

🐕 When to Pause:
✨ Low energy or motivation.
✨ Feeling unwell or physically uncomfortable (for you or your gundog).
✨ Stress signs—like pacing, whining, or distraction.
✨ Training feels off-track or inconsistent.

🌿 What to Do Instead of Training:
🦮 Mindful Walks: Let your gundog sniff and explore at their own pace.
🤲 Gentle Bonding Time: Relax together with stroking or massage.
🧩 Playtime & Enrichment: Quiet puzzle games for fun and mental stimulation.

🌟 Remember:
Taking a break is progress! Recharging brings you and your gundog back stronger, more focused, and ready to enjoy the next step.

Stop saying no to your reactive gundog. 💔

Growling isn’t bad behaviour, it’s communication. Saying "no" to your reactive gundog doesn’t help them feel better; it just teaches them to stop expressing their discomfort, which can lead to worse behaviours happening ‘without warning’ because we have told them that giving that warning is not appropriate3.

Instead, respond with calm reassurance: "It’s okay, I’m here to help" Starting working on changing their environment, reducing their stress, helping them feel more confident and emotionally supported and let them know you’re listening.

All Gundogs Need to Learn This Art 🎯

Does your gundog struggle to stop and just be? 🐾 It’s a common challenge, especially with high energy breeds like Cocker Spaniels, but it’s an essential life skill.

Teaching your gundog the art of stillness has huge benefits:
✔️ Mental health: It reduces stress and helps them self-regulate.
✔️ Physical well-being: It prevents overexertion and teaches balance.
✔️ Spiritual harmony: Stillness nurtures a deeper connection between you and your dog.

But how do you teach this skill? 💡

Here’s a step-by-step guide to get started:
1️⃣ On your walks, stop and shorten the lead so they can’t distract themselves with sniffing or wandering.
2️⃣ Start with just 30 seconds to a minute. Build slowly.
3️⃣ Centre yourself first. Use a physiological sigh (two inhales, one long exhale) or a mindfulness exercise like the 5-4-3-2-1 method (why not join our free online community to find out more about things like this - link in comments).

Remember, your energy matters! If you’re tense, your gundog will pick up on it. When you relax, they’ll find it easier to settle.

Learning to switch off isn’t just for working gundogs. It’s a skill that benefits every dog and every owner 🌟 Less stress, more connection, and a calmer life for both of you.

What’s your experience with teaching stillness? I’d love to hear your thoughts and tips below! 👇

🐾 Why You Need to Prioritise Your Gundog’s Training 🐾

If you’re having trouble with your gundog’s behaviour, whether it’s reactivity, anxiousness, or pulling you around during walks, it’s easy to put off getting help. Life gets busy, right? But here’s the thing: the longer you wait, the more the frustration builds and the problems become well-rehearsed habits. And it doesn’t just affect your gundog; it affects you too!

Over time, what starts as a small issue can grow into something that impacts your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Suddenly, walks aren’t fun anymore, and the stress becomes overwhelming. Sound familiar?

Don’t let it get to that point. If your gundog’s behaviour is causing you stress, prioritise getting help today.

✅ Reach out, book a session, or ask me a question in the comments.
✅ Start making small changes now to break the cycle of frustration.

You and your gundog deserve to enjoy your time together, not dread it. Let’s work together to make that happen. Ready to get started? Visit www.confidentcanine.co.uk or drop me a message 💡

🐾 Why saying "No" doesn’t work, and what to do instead 🐾

Do you find yourself saying no to your gundog, expecting them to magically understand what you mean?

Here’s the truth: they don’t have a clue what no means 🚫

Many owners believe their dogs "know" what no means, but like any cue unless you’ve taught them, it’s just a random sound to them (how 'no' is an impossible cue is for another day). And when they don’t respond the way you want, it’s not disobedience, it’s confusion.

So, what should you do?
✅ Replace no with clear guidance. If your gundog is jumping, teach them to keep their feet on the floor. If they’re barking, teach them to be quiet.
✅ Focus on what you do want, not what you don’t.
✅ Help them succeed with positive reinforcement and training.

Let’s set our gundogs up for success by showing them the behaviour we want, instead of expecting them to know what no means. Ready to make the shift? Visit www.confidentcanine.co.uk for more tips or drop your questions in the comments! 💡

Reward-based training for gundogs Isn’t about shovelling treats!

Reward-based training can sometimes get an unfair reputation. People often think it’s about waving food in front of your gundog’s nose or constantly feeding them just to get things done. But true reward-based training is so much more than that, it’s a method built on understanding, communication, and connection.

Here’s why reward-based training is amazing for gundogs:
🐾 Confidence Building: Rewards encourage your gundog to try new things without fear, helping them grow in confidence and become more self-assured.
🐕 Emotional Shifts: For reactive gundogs, this type of training can help them feel better about things that worry them, making the world a less scary place.
🤝 Strengthening the Bond: Done properly, it teaches your gundog to focus on you, not just the reward, deepening your connection.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- One of the biggest mistakes I see is using treats as bribes instead of rewards. For example:
Picking up a treat, waving it around, and saying, “Come here, and you can have this!”
This approach teaches your gundog to focus on the food instead of the training. Proper reward-based training means rewards are earned, not dangled in front of them. Yes, your gundog might know the treats are in your pocket, but their focus should be on you, not the food.

What Does Reward-Based Training Done Right Look Like?
When it’s done well:
- Rewards are given after your gundog does something great, not as a lure to make it happen.
- It’s not just about treats—rewards can include toys, praise, or even the environment.
- Your gundog feels confident, connected, and eager to work with you—not obsessed with what’s in your pocket!
Reward-based training works because it’s enjoyable for your gundog. It’s not about forcing them to comply, it’s about helping them want to work with you.

🐾 Let’s talk about guilt 🐾

As gundog owners, we put so much pressure on ourselves to get everything perfect, every cue, every session, every decision. But here’s the truth: guilt doesn’t serve you, and it doesn’t serve your gundog either.

So, if you’re feeling guilty about something today, here’s a simple mindset shift:

✨ Think of three things you got right, no matter how small they seem. Maybe it’s a moment of patience, a walk that felt connected, or simply showing up for your gundog despite a busy day.

When you focus on what’s going well, you break free from guilt and step into a space of growth and understanding. Training isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection, learning, and building trust together.

💛 What three things can you celebrate today?

Let’s share and inspire one another in the comments!

🎯 Describe your gundog in just three words!

The more you understand your gundog's unique traits, the better you can tailor your training and life to their needs, building a stronger bond and creating a true partnership.

Let’s celebrate their quirks and qualities 🎉

Drop your three words below and let’s see how diverse our gundogs are!

21/11/2024

Struggling with loose leash walking, recall, gundog not listening? It’s not about your gundog being “naughty.” It’s about what they can or can’t cope with.

Frustration clouds progress, by focusing on helping your gundog navigate challenges and not taking it personally, you can then notice their triggers and troubles, adjust your approach, and build that bond 💕

Ever heard the myth that letting your gundog on the sofa or bed will make them think they rule the world? Let’s bust that myth! 🚫

Throne mentality isn’t a thing with gundogs. It’s all about mutual respect and good manners. If they hop off when asked, there’s no harm in sharing the cosy spots. 🛋️🐾

Teach them safety cues like waiting at doors for practicality, not dominance. 🐕💖

About Essex Gundog Training

Essex Gundog Training is part of Confident Canine, I have given Essex Gundog Training a separate FB page as it makes it easier to focus on for those only interested in the Gundog Training :)

I currently have 3 Longhaired Weimaraners, which fall into the HPR group (hunt, point & retrieve) within the gundog group.

I have worked both of my older bi***es out in the field, rough shooting and beating and attending shot over days and test events and the youngest has just started training up for more field fun! I also previously worked my last Longhaired Weimaraner Kodi doing all the above. I also currently compete in Obedience with my Faith and used to compete in agility with Kodi.
