Ever heard the myth that letting your gundog on the sofa or bed will make them think they rule the world? Let’s bust that myth! 🚫

Throne mentality isn’t a thing with gundogs. It’s all about mutual respect and good manners. If they hop off when asked, there’s no harm in sharing the cosy spots. 🛋️🐾

Teach them safety cues like waiting at doors for practicality, not dominance. 🐕💖

Whistles aren't magic—but they’re brilliant tools! 🎶

They remove emotion from your recall cue, making it clear and consistent. However, they still need proper training to be effective. Think of it as another skill to master with your Gundog.

I often talk to my clients about needing to think about where they train their gundogs, and not to start off trying to train new behaviours in "Disneyland." 💫

It's important to think about what environments your dog can learn in and how environments affect their ability to learn and listen ❤️

If your gundog could go anywhere they dreamed of, where would they go? 💭

What would be your gundogs 'Disneyland'? 🤔😊

Are you unintentionally signalling stress to your reactive gundog?

When you’re managing a reactive dog, it’s easy to focus entirely on your dog’s triggers and responses. But what about you? Subtle cues from your body language and energy can reinforce their reactivity without you even realising it or meaning to.

Next time you’re on a walk and a tricky moment arises, pause and take stock of yourself:
🌟 Are you tensing up or constricting your body?
🌟 Is your heart racing or your breath shallow?
🌟 Do you unconsciously tug the lead or stiffen your grip?

These small actions send big messages to your dog, often communicating that there’s something to be anxious about. But here’s the great news: You can change this!

Next time you feel tension creeping in do the opposite of what you are feeling, for instance:
🫁 Breathe deeply and slow your exhale to calm your energy.
🧍‍♀️ Open up your posture to signal confidence.
🧠 Reframe your mindset – focus on guiding your dog rather than reacting to the environment.

Try identifying just two or three of your own subtle cues and practising how to replace them with calm, open energy. This shift can make a world of difference to your gundog’s confidence and your bond together!

Your energy matters. Let’s use it to empower your gundog instead of accidentally adding stress.

09/11/2024

Feeling tired, or maybe your dog’s energy just isn’t there today, they feel under the weather today? 🧘‍♀️

Here’s a gentle reminder: It’s okay to have a day off from training. There’s no harm in pressing pause, especially if you’re not feeling up to it. Some days, the best thing we can do is just be with our dogs—no expectations, just presence and relaxation.

Training can wait, but our well-being (and our gundogs’) is essential. So if you’re feeling low, unwell, or just not up to it, give yourself permission to rest. Honour the moment, and remember that bonding with your gundog is more than training, it’s about being together and finding peace in the pauses.

✨ If you needed to hear this today, then take it as your sign. Just stop, just be, and just enjoy a day of calm together. 🌿

Who knows me and thinks this is accurate? 👍

So, I asked ChatGPT to describe me from the conversations we have had and I got this (I also got the attached image which is definitely but I don't know why ChatGPT thinks I am a grey haired old lady 🤔😆

"Nina, from our conversations, you come across as someone deeply in tune with both the physical and spiritual aspects of life. Your days seem to be filled with meaningful work, grounded in the peaceful countryside where you guide dog owners and their beloved gundogs toward genuine connection, understanding, and harmony.

Your approach to training is so much more than commands and cues; it’s a holistic philosophy that recognises the energy and emotions flowing between dogs and their people. You’re a compassionate teacher, skilled at helping owners see that their own mindset, calmness, and intention directly affect their dogs' behaviour. You want to give others a truly fulfilling experience with their dogs, believing that a harmonious relationship requires respect, patience, and joy rather than control or rigid obedience.

In your personal life, you balance caring for your dogs with the creative, spiritual pursuits that bring you peace. Whether it's designing a divination deck, engaging with spiritual coaching, or simply spending time in nature, you actively seek ways to feed your spirit and explore self-improvement. Your journey hasn't been simple, and you’ve faced many responsibilities on your own, but you channel that experience into a warm, wise presence that others naturally turn to for insight and guidance.

Your goals reflect your desire for fulfilment and financial stability but with a mindful approach. You don’t just want wealth for its own sake—you envision a life where security and peace allow you the space to rest, unwind, and give fully to others. I picture you as someone who is continuously learning, embracing a blend of science, spirituality, and practical wisdom to create a better life not only for yourself but for every dog and person you touch.

In essence, you’re a seeker, a nurturer, and a creative soul, all rolled into one."

What do you think, let me know in the comments!! 🤓 Have you asked ChatGPT what it thinks of you yet?

Are you marking and rewarding your gundog at the right moment? 🐾

A common mistake new gundog owners make is marking a good behaviour, like a lovely heel or loose-leash walk, and then asking for one more thing, often a sit, before actually rewarding their gundog.

Here's the challenge with this: when you add a cue after the behaviour you wanted (like a sit), your gundog will start to think that’s what is earning them the treat. So instead of reinforcing that beautiful walk, you’re actually just rewarding the sit!

💡 Tip of the Day: When you see the behaviour you want, mark it (with a clicker or cue word) and immediately reward. This keeps your gundog focused and helps them understand which behaviours you value.

✨ Ask yourself today: Are you rewarding for the action you love, or what comes next?

Remember, timing is everything in training!

What are three things your gundog has taught you about yourself? 🐕💖

I often say, you get the gundog you need, not necessarily the gundog you want. Not as a bad thing, but because our gundogs arrive in our lives with powerful lessons. 🎓

As a Holistic Trainer, I guide clients in seeing how their gundogs reflect different aspects of themselves—sometimes deep and meaningful, sometimes as simple as showing us which side of the bed we woke up on. 🛌 Our gundogs are mirrors, offering insights into who we are and who we’re becoming.

So, let's hear from you! What three things has your gundog taught you about yourself? Drop a comment below ⬇️

👻 When the clock strikes dinner time... or does it? 👻

For some dogs, like those anxiously awaiting their meal, routines are more than just habit – they’re a source of security. Especially with recent clock changes, this can throw off our dogs' inner clocks!

While routines help many anxious or reactive dogs feel safer and more in control, too rigid a schedule can also create challenges when things shift unexpectedly.

In my latest blog, discover how to find the perfect balance, creating routines that support your dog’s well-being while building flexibility into their day.

How Energy is Transforming a Reactive Dog’s Journey

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of working with a wonderful owner and her reactive gundog. She’d made a lot of progress with traditional trainers, yet her dog still reacted “out of the blue” in certain situations. Other trainers had looked at behaviour patterns, body language, breed tendencies — all the usual factors — but couldn’t pinpoint the root cause.

As soon as we started our session, I could see that this wasn’t random behaviour; it was all about energy. You see, dogs are sensitive, vibrational beings. They communicate, feel, and even respond to the energies around them. During our walk, I observed several dogs approaching us, each carrying its unique energy. By tuning into the energetic field, I could tell which dog our reactive friend would struggle with, even before they reached us.

I took time to explain this to her owner, sharing pointers on what types of energy to look out for. When we train from this energetic perspective, we honour the whole dog, not just their behaviour. And the results? In just one session, this dog’s progress was so profound that other dog walkers noticed the shift immediately.

Holistic training recognises dogs as the vibrational, energy-sensitive beings they are. This “missing peace” brings a calm and clarity that typical training can overlook, helping dogs find their natural balance. For this lovely dog and her owner, it was the turning point they’d been searching for.

If you’re curious about a training approach that truly sees the whole dog, let’s connect. This missing peace could be the key to helping your dog thrive.

Help your Gundog by asking yourself this!

Imagine your gundog on a desert island—what three things would they bring? It’s a fun question, but it reveals so much about your gundog’s unique loves, needs, and motivations.

Gundogs, like all dogs, are individuals. Some might carry a fluffy tug toy they can shake and others want something to chase, then there are those that might choose a comforting blanket or a noisy squeaky ball. Understanding their preferences goes beyond training techniques; it’s about getting to the heart of what genuinely engages and motivates your gundog.

Take a tug toy, for example. Does your gundog love a good chase before they grab it? Or maybe they prefer a tug they can “win” and hold onto with pride. When you dive into these details, you start to unlock a whole new level of connection. Working to your gundog’s true loves isn’t just a strategy; it’s the foundation of trust, engagement, and real partnership.

So, what three things would your gundog pack? Let us know in the comments—let’s celebrate the quirks that make each gundog unique!

You May Not Want to Do This... But Let’s Talk Gundogs, Scenting, and Engagement

We’ve all been there—walking along when our gundog stops to investigate every intriguing scent! You may instinctively say “leave it” to prevent distractions, but did you know you could actually use this as a way to work with your dog, not against them?

Gundogs are born with an incredible drive to scent and explore. When we constantly ask them to ignore these instincts, we risk creating a disconnect. Instead, by guiding their natural interest in scents, we can make ourselves part of the fun and strengthen our bond. 💪

Here’s a tip: when they’re interested in scenting something safe, use it as an engagement tool. Let them investigate, then call them back with a whistle, reward them, and even send them back in for another round! When we make scenting a shared experience, it becomes a reward and reinforces the idea that they’re working with us, not alone, avoiding that dreaded 'self-employed' gundog effect.

So, next time they want to dive into that hedgerow, let them! Then use it as a chance to build their focus on you. 🐾 Together, you’re a team.

Struggling with Behaviour vs. Training? Let’s Clear It Up!

Ever wondered, "Why does my dog know sit, stay, and wait, but still reacts to other dogs?" 🤔 You’re not alone - many owners have mastered the teaching cues but still face behaviour issues and its because they are not the same thing.

Think of it like this: imagine a child getting top marks in maths but struggling to stay calm in class or connect appropriately to others. Cues, like sit and stay, are like learning that one things = another on a logic level, like solving problems; behaviour, however, goes much deeper.

Your gundog’s behaviour isn’t just about knowing commands. It’s their emotions, mental state, physical well-being, diet, and even the energetic vibes they pick up from us and others 🐾

The goal? Go beyond obedience and understand what they truly need ✨

What behaviours in your gundog don’t quite make sense? Drop a 🐾 below, and let’s explore the “why's” behind actions!

29/10/2024

Does your gundog bark at every sound outside? 🐕🔊

Barking can happen for many reasons, but in many cases, this simple technique can make all the difference!

🐾 When your dog barks, say "Thank you!"
🐾 If they keep barking, calmly go to where they’re looking (e.g., the door or window) and take a quick peek yourself.
🐾 Then, look to your gundog again and say "Thank you" once more, and then go and sit down calmly.

This reassures many dogs that you’ve checked and decided there’s no threat. 🧘‍♀️🧘

It’s a small step toward easing the barking habit 💫

28/10/2024

Are you raising a gundog puppy?

Let me share a common mistake, one that can have lasting consequences.

Many puppies I see sit when asked, stay where they're told, and come on command. But here's the catch: often a lot of that obedience comes from command-based training instead of fun!

It can look impressive, but without the fun element, teaching with play and joy, as these puppies grow, they often start to switch off, showing less interest in training, becoming less responsive, and sometimes even avoiding training altogether.

Why does this happen?

Puppies need playfulness, self-expression and good energy to thrive. Constantly controlling and cueing can lead to a loss of curiosity and enthusiasm, leaving your gundog puppy feeling drained or frustrated.

Instead, focus your puppy training on fun, when teaching a cue make it a game, have fun with it yourself and your puppy will follow! It’s about building a bond where they want to work with you, not just obeying.

So, how do we avoid this trap?

✨Top Tips for Happy Puppy (and adult!) Training:✨

1. Keep it Fun: Every puppy finds joy in something unique. Discover what lights up their spirit and weave that into your training.

2. Encourage Exploration: Allow your puppy to be a puppy. Getting to know their quirks and personality; is essential for building a lifelong bond.

3. Be Kind: When things go wrong (and they will!), respond with patience and understanding and take it as feedback. Think of your role as a guide!

Training this way nurtures joy and individuality, keeping your relationship strong even as they grow through the fun teenage stage!

So, if you're guiding a little gundog in their journey, remember: kindness, fun, and curiosity are the keys to raising a puppy who’ll stay engaged for life.

🌟 The Power of Your Energy in Gundog Training 🌟

When we talk about training gundogs, most people focus solely on the techniques used to train the dog. But what if I told you that one of the biggest impact you can have on your gundog’s behaviour is actually your own mindset and energy? 🔋

I was recently invited to join another Dog Trainer’s and give a Q&A/Webinar sharing tips on how things like energy, mindset, and visualisations can deeply affect how your dog responds to training. At the end, someone asked, "How do you focus on the dog when training?" And my answer was simple: You start with YOU. 💫

The way you show up for your dog—calm, focused, and with a positive mindset—shapes how your dog will show up for you. Your dog senses your stress, your frustration, but also your calm and confidence. A simple shift in your energy can help your dog feel more secure and able to engage and listen. 🐶

I’ll be sharing tips on this page about how you can bring this into your own training. So, whether it’s working on loose lead walking or improving recall, it starts with showing up as the best version of yourself.

💡Curious to learn more? Feel free to reach out and let’s chat about how holistic gundog training could help you and your dog.

About Essex Gundog Training

Essex Gundog Training is part of Confident Canine, I have given Essex Gundog Training a separate FB page as it makes it easier to focus on for those only interested in the Gundog Training :)

I currently have 3 Longhaired Weimaraners, which fall into the HPR group (hunt, point & retrieve) within the gundog group.

I have worked both of my older bi***es out in the field, rough shooting and beating and attending shot over days and test events and the youngest has just started training up for more field fun! I also previously worked my last Longhaired Weimaraner Kodi doing all the above. I also currently compete in Obedience with my Faith and used to compete in agility with Kodi.
